I have a single speed bike, that has started to clunk something awful when I pedal. I can feel it in my feet, so I think the problem could be the bottom bracket. Unfortunately I live in a small town in Thailand, and no one here seems to know much about fixing bikes for some reason. I took it to a scooter repair shop, but all they did was grease the chain, which I had done before going there. I hope I'm able to fix whatever this is, but every time I go out to attempt to try and take it apart, I get scared I will mess something up. It's my only form of transportation, so I'm scared to risk it. But if I get the courage, I'll refer back to this video. Thank you for making it!

Hey man, I understand the worry, I really do. My bike is my only form transportation as well since I lost my car. But honestly I have the exact same issues you do when pedaling so yes I do agree it's the bottom bracket. Especially for me since it's been at least 3 years since I even took out the bottom bracket. You can do this repair man, I believe in you!!!

@@thedudeisgreat thanks! I did have the bottom bracket replaced several times since my comment. It shouldn't have needed to be replaced that many times, but they never fix things to last there. I just left Thailand and now back in the states.

Great watch. I also have a trek roscoe 8; I had a truative spline BB, which I went through 3 of them in 2 years! I've now a press fit, but I will use your method of changing the bearings. You made it look so easy. Thank you. It will save me money as I've been paying a mechanic.

I am coming up on two years of riding my same bottom bracket and it's still running fine, but then I don't ride in rainy and muddy conditions very often. Regardless, this is a reminder that I should go ahead and replace mine this year (I typically get two to three years out of a bb) I just had my frame replaced last month due to a crack in the seat stay/seat tube weld and the local bike shop mechanic was very meticulous about building up the bike under warranty and didn't think there was a need for replacement at the time. I am calling my "new" bike a Roscoe X, it's all Roscoe parts, plus my upgraded RS Revelation fork, Race Face bar, stem, and grips, new saddle, and Trek sent me a 2021 X Caliber 8 frame with no model name (mat black w/ white and silver decals vs. my original Marigold Fade of the 2020).

Thanks for the positive video. I just got a new bike (used) and decided to check the bottom bracket. No play but when I removed it there were a few little stones/grit mixed with grease! Definitely a good thing to take it out and clean every now and again. I wondered where the muck came from. I think it must have gotten through the holes in the frame for the dropper post. I will see if I can make some plugs for the holes to ensure no grit gets there! Thanks!

I have a brand new Trek FX2 with maybe 10 rides on it...bottom bracket blew and now I need a new one. Owned the bike 45 days.

That’s the one thing trek really needed to spec better on the bike is the bottom bracket. Everyone i know has had theirs fail

Same goes for Specialized, my Chisel came with PowerSpline :/ Changing over to DUB.

After watching this, that BB was actually pretty clean compared to some that are far more abused. Yours likely just needed to adjust the pre-load to remove the play.
