Broadway in Yiddish? - Joel Grey and Fiddler on the Roof at Easter Bonnet Competition 2019
Ойын-сауық
At the 2019 Easter Bonnet Competition, the award for best presentation went to the cast of Off-Broadway’s Fiddler on the Roof - in Yiddish, which asked the question, “What if other Broadway classics were translated into Yiddish?” Their answer was a side-splitting medley of the Yiddish versions of The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Dreamgirls, Hamilton, Legally Blonde, South Pacific, West Side Story and Wicked, culminating with the show’s legendary director, Joel Grey, singing “Git op mayn grus tsu Brodvey” (“Give my regards to Broadway”) from George M!. The skit was written by cast members Ben Liebert and Adam B. Shapiro with Yiddish lyrics by Mikhl Yashinsky.
Records were shattered and inspiring, comical and soul-stirring performances were shared at the 33rd annual Easter Bonnet Competition, which raised $6,594,778 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the highest amount ever for a Broadway Cares event.
The record-breaking number was raised by 69 Broadway, Off-Broadway and national touring productions and was announced Tuesday, April 23, 2019, by Bryan Cranston (Network), Jeff Daniels (To Kill a Mockingbird), Glenda Jackson (King Lear) and Kelli O’Hara (Kiss Me, Kate). The previous record was $6,379,572, set in 2017. Since the Easter Bonnet Competition began in 1987, the event has raised $87.5 million for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

In Fiddler on the Roof in this production, the actress playing Fruma Sarah sits on someone’s shoulders underneath a long dress to look like a 7 foot tall demon from the underworld. I’m guessing that the actress playing Fruma Sarah also has serious belting chops, similar to Elphaba, so they were able to recreate the effect here.

I saw Fiddler today on Broadway. Outstanding performance. The drama and tragedy of the story really stand out when it’s presented without the usual cliche hijinks. It’s actually a very sad story. All the actors were great.
Brilliant... brightened my day.... Having grown up in a Jewish home where Yiddish was the second language so many years ago....thank you!

Yes!! Haha
"You know, he would be rolling in his grave..." Rolling with laughter, I think, Mr. Grey.
"Come From Oy Vey" sounds like an amazing parody.
I cannot stop smiling as I watch this
I need to get a closer picture of the hat at the end. I can make out "Chozen" and "Come From Oy Vey" and I think "Book of Moshe"?

I need Joel Grey to do every musical as every character in Yiddish!
I need one in Ladino. I might actually understand something, but this is also awesome.

I'd pay to see the Yiddish version of The Book Of Mormon....or fund it.

Just LOVE this!!!
It's always good to see Mickey Katz's son.
"Phantom of the Matzah"
I think Joel Grey was 87 when this was recorded. I'll have whatever he's having.
COME FROM OY VEY IM CRYING AND ITS LIKE 2 AM
My singing teacher is famous now.yay 😁
I'm reading the playbills at 4:21. This is funny. Pause if you want to. Chosen instead of Frozen (like the chosen people or the Chaim Potok novel), Phantom of the Matza, Come from Oy Vey, Dear Evan Cohen, Knish Me Kate, The Book of Moses (though that sounds more like an actual thing than a parody of the Book of Mormon). Hamilton has a big K on it with a star around it and I don't know why. I can't make out the others.

Thank you for pointing this out!!! Those are all great jokes. Star-K is a major kosher certification 🙂 (The joke isn't specifically about the food being pareve, although it is true that any kashrut organization has to state if the food contains-or was made on the same equipment as-milk, meat, or fish. So the Star-K uses a separate Star-D symbol for their dairy products.)
Love it !
So upset they didn't include Yiddish Phantom of the Opera, Six, Lion King etc.
