BROADHEAD BASICS-and why mechanicals suck+ Fixed heads out to 90 yards

Спорт

Before you get your panties in a wad, Ive killed more deer with mechanicals than I have fixed heads, but ill still tell you why they kind of suck. Rage, Iron will, Swhacker, Valkyrie, Sevre, QAD and more.

You got me again - hook, line, and sinker! I appreciate you’re explanation on the importance of knowing what your own setup. There’s no comparison to how well fixed blades penetrate with your hide test. If I tested my Thorn broadheads with your hide test I think they would fail miserably compared to other mechanicals. I can’t help but think my whitetail harvest this past season from 65 yards was credited to the 130 grains of FAK weights. You definitely got me motivated!

I really like how you tested the penetration. Very interesting, I’ve never seen it done that way. I’ve always shot fixed blades but I’ve always been interested in mechanicals. This just reassured that I’m going to stick with fixed heads.

That’s cause trad hunters have to. Not taking anything away from trad hunters,, (they are the foundation of hunting, the elites) With modern compound bow speeds a fixed head is more hard to tune cause they tend to make the arrow plain at longer distances. I still hunt with a fixed from tree stand 20 yards but always have a mechanical or 2 in my quiver just incase

Great Video brother!!! I switched over to Valkyrie broadheads this year from G5 Deadmeat. Best broadhead I have shot. I have shot 5 deer this year all over 40 yards and each had pass through and not one ran further than 40 yards. In fact I shot 2 of them through the shoulders .A complete bone crusher and I all have to due is sharpen the blades and good as new. No more blade replacements! I am sold on fixed blades over mechanical.

That’s a great test you did. I was told to use fixed but I had bought a hybrid and thought it was best of both world. This was my first season hunting as a 35 year old. I shot a small buck and believe to have shouldered him. Never recovered after searching for 2 full days with no blood. After that I bought fixed blades and I will never look back.

I shoot a 45 lb trad bow off the shelf and fixed 2 blade cut on contact head. I spent a lot of time getting every arrow to shoot the same but the reward was pass throughs on deer and most every thing else. I will say if this is what you are after you must put in the time and effort but the reward is fantastic.

Like a lot of people I was always worried about bow setup and forget about one of or one the most important parts and that is arrow and broadhead set up since that is the only part that makes contact with the animal. Since I have been sown with shoulder surgery and that bad miss on a buck it really opened my eyes and doing more research and starting to find out what works for me, not what works for everyone else although I will take everyones ideas try them. You make a lot of great points. I like you penetration test which just gives us an idea the force it takes each broad head to get through. Been hunting for about 5 seasons now. I have tried a few different broadheads. Grim Reaper 2” cut pass through do to one blade opening, next season not a pass through all 3 blades opened, the next season I went same brand just 1 3/8” cut still no a pass through but could hear the arrow hit outside shoulder (awesome blood trail). Also tried the G5 Montec flies true no blood trail that was a good shot, some of that could have been me not having it as sharp as I thought it was. I tried the Magnus Stinger and even on a bad shot was a pass through and didn’t go far. So I tried the Grim Reaper again 10yd shot pulled it left hit the shoulder. Never found. So after that I am going back to the Magnus and a HFOC.

Happy and productive new year!!! The main problem with mechanicals is that they are not going to reveal poor arrow tuning since they're hitting the same spot with your field points. On the contrary if the fxed blade hits the same spot with the field point you've got a killer recipy. An arrow of about 25% FOC balance (or more) tuned to your bow will drive the fixed blade or the mechanical equally well but fixed blades have the advantage of loading the front easier. I'm not aware of any heavy mechanicals.... Unfortunately We can't skip any step while tuning an arrow since is a hunting arrow. It not only matters where it hits but also how it hits. It has to hit straight. It must utilize all the speed and the arrow mass. It has to hit straight to retain the momentum and the force all the way through the animal. Now for the front... Fixed, sharp*, (double edge) right or left single bevel, heavy broadheads (able to split bone). Alternatives? Chaos... *(Imagine what whould have happened not only in your leather experiment but also in a hunting situation if the animal is not broadside but at an angle. I'm interested in boars and they don't pose like models do. :)

Very interesting presentation. I shoot 55#s at 28" with 452 grain arrows. Carnivore with added brass point weight. Magnus Black Hornet. Set up for deer etc. I'm OCD about my equipment and with an Evolve 35 100% pass thru is a no brainer. I never really thought about how much energy can be wasted on the entry of mechanicals thru just the hide. Of coarse the skin of a live deer or antelope is probably not nearly as tough and resistant as a tanned cow hide but I completely understand the idea of your video. I've never ever even shot a mechanical. Back when you were throwing newspapers, I was using old Zwickey and Bear heads. They worked fine but weren't as resilient it seems as today's products. My view is with all the money and effort involved in just a simple back yard deer hunt the broad head really only has to perform "once". The first time.

Great video! Loved it. To me, the most important thing imaginable for blood trailing is two holes being created-especially if you're a tree stand hunter, because the exit wound will generally be low on the body. As blood fills the chest cavity's bottom (via gravity) the exit wound acts as a drain. Whereas high entry may produce less blood. When I've passed through on mechanical, I had crime scene blood. When I didn't (which was most of the time), it was piddly. The Royal College of Veterinary Science did a massive study with over 1,700 archery kills and concluded that a complete passthrough was far more lethal than the arrow remaining in the animal. So if creating two holes is the goal, I'm going fixed all day. I've had success with both, no doubt. But give me a passthrough and a broadhead that doesn't require movement or bone avoidance to be effective and I'm a confident hunter.

Excellent pressure test. I would have a hard time shooting the vented Valkyrie since I believe it lacks the structural integrity of my Valkyrie short Jagger 210. So I'm not saying a word about mechanicals. I had my baptism with them in the 90's. The problem is what the animal below u does between the shot & point of impact. Now let's add the deer of a lifetime who doesn't follow the script to the equation. I watched a deer from May into November that I thought I would get an encounter with. I did finally get my opportunity on November 14th. My only shot was quartering towards me. When the left front hoof was forward & hit the ground I released & hit it in front of the right shoulder & the shaft exited 3" back behind the left side lower. Animal went 10 yards , stumbled & crashed. No movement 9 seconds after the passthrough. If it went 50 yards in 2 directions I would be trespassing to recover. 2 days b4 that there was a smaller buck traveling through with it & this DOE dwarfed him. She dressed out @ 163 lbs. & I'm confident she was 8 years old. She lost a fawn to a car in July Even though I don't have the momentum to match that car my setup is as lethal as I need it to be. I'm concerned more about my exit being too far back rather than where the impact is. That Iron Will would probably be in my quiver but I really like the true design of the 3 blade that u referred to @ the end of your video.

In my opinion mechanicals add one more factor to having success, which is opening up the blades correctly. If i am out hunting, maybe buck fever kicks in or I face other obstacles, I dont wanna take any chances for stuff like that to happen, i want my gear to perform at its best when i am on my worst. Thats why i use fixed heads. Also my short 27" draw lenght does not compliment mechanicals even with an 80 pound bow. Nice video, just discovered your channel. You earned a new sub!

I have been a huge advocate of fixed blades for the past 30 years until this year. I tuned my bow to match the broad heads to my field tips but either I was off or with the extra wind on the day caused more deviation than expected. I still got 2 does using my fixed broad heads but I wanted to try a mechanical for the first time. I used a Rage broad head and on a 35 yard slightly quartering away shot on an 8 pointer, the broad head flew just like my field tips (which was the main goal). The bonus was I didn't need to debate where I shot the deer. After the shot the deer started running and I could see a baseball sized red mark on the deer at my arrow entry point. Zero debate if it was a good shot or not. I will continue with the Rage mechanical for a while until I run into issues but I don't expect to with a 70 lbs bow 30 inch draw.

I’ve shot two deer this year with Magnus Black Hornet Ser Razors and they have been scary sharp that has seemed to be the biggest difference maker for me. The doe I shot ran hard but died in 40 yards, the buck I shot on a steep angle at 8 yards and only got one lung he ran 30 yards and then just walked around until he crashed at about 60, it’s like he had no idea what had happened to him. I know for the amount of time he was alive after the shot he could’ve easily run 150 plus yards but it seemed like the lack of shock and impact was a big difference maker

I changed to sevr broadheads this year and totally impressed. I shot my sevr through a 2.5 yr old buck’s shoulder blade at 38 yards. Arrow did not pass all the way through. Found arrow in the buck... however, the arrow did pass through the body, the fletchings were all the way down to the Hyde, and the broadhead had passed all the way through and was sticking out a significant amount on the other side. This video gave me ideas for review topics for videos I could make and want to make. Does it matter the amount of force it takes to “break skin?” Because it’s clearly getting the job done. I didn’t have blood for the first 10-12 yards but had a solid blood trail after that to where he went down not too far away. Went through a pretty thick part of the shoulder blade. So where you’re talking about blades bending and that... yeah.. ok. So what? I like that I can shoot a field point, put on a broadhead, and get the same performance... exact same. I don’t have to worry about sighting in my broadhead, and my field point separate. To me that’s a win for field point.

Sevr redesigned the deployment wings on the 2.0 and 1.5 to be more streamlined. They definitely penetrate better than the original 2.1. I killed an antelope with a 2.1 and was disappointed. Shot an antelope and a bull with the 1.5 this year and was impressed.

Before mechanicals existed I shot a 5 blade NAP Razorback which shot identical to the 145 grain field points on an aluminum 2413 at 31". About a 500 grain arrow traveling 256 fpm from a 70 pound bow and 30.5" draw. Was very sad when they discontinued them. The blades were embedded in a plastic sleeve that could rotate around the shaft of the broad head. They also made a 3 blade version but with 5 blades there was no wind drift.

I'm curious to see your thoughts on some single bevel heads now. I know you have a lot invested in the valkyrie system, but I'd like to see you push one of the grizzly stik maasai's through that hide and see how it does. I bought a pack on black friday sale and they are by far the sharpest heads out of the package I've ever seen. Literally shaving sharp from the factory. Even my wasp heads (which are quality heads) aren't this sharp until I sharpen them before hunting. Maybe even check out the new tuffhead evolution series or even the cutthroats?

Ok, just to get a little nerdy on if the 50-60 lbs of force to open the mechanical is a little or a lot, here is the math behind it. Lets take a 400 grain arrow traveling at 250 ft/s. The equation we would like to solve is the force equation where F = ma. "m" is the mass of the arrow 400 grain = 0.00177 slugs. "a" is the change in velocity divided by the change in time. The initial velocity is 250 ft/s and the end velocity is 0 so the change in velocity is 250 ft/s. The change in time we will use 1 inch of penetration so 250 ft/s = 3000 in/s so it take 0.00033 sec to travel 1 inch. F = ma = 0.00177*250/0.00033 = 1341 lb/ft . 60 lbs of force to get your mechanical broad head to open isn't much compared to the power required to stop the arrow.

I know sevr said why it’s dull where the beginning of the blades are is because it’ll push the skin in and stretch it before the blades open. So the 1.5” blades will make a much larger cutting length because it stretches first. I haven’t decided what route I wanna go. A lot of people say mechanical fails but some people haven’t had that issue. So maybe I’ll try both.

So I used mechanicals almost exclusively since 2011 lost 3 deer that were shot in the right spot one was penetration, one was a deflection and would have been my best deer to date and the last one the blades didn’t deploy. This year I started using nothing but fixed heads because I just wasn’t risking losing another one but the other animals I shot with mechanicals expired quickly. Good luck which ever you choose.

Interesting video but I think you should try a different version of what you were doing. You can shoot a pencil through a deer with the bows we have our right now (exaggeration but you get my point). I think you should try shooting them from done if the adjustable bored and see how low the poundage can go with each type to get comparable results. I think that would be a lot better to show the differences. If something's moving fast and hard enough it'll pass through or get to what you need to do but to emphasize your point I do think showing the comparison between the types of heads and how little forces needed between them. I think it's the same point you're trying to show but it'll be a bit more effective then just you pushing it through by hand. (Edit) By the way thanks for all the videos. I just started getting into hunting this year and you were actually my go-to reference for most everything over any other site I saw. I really appreciate the straightforward commentary and I don't feel like I'm getting a super biased angle because your face is on some sticker that a bow company puts on their packages.

@@brandonmcdonald6121 exactly. Sometimes science forgets how the real world operates if you know what I mean. It's illustrative abilities as a test speak volumes. When all is fairly equal how does one compare to the other. If this were done in a lab with machines and exact measurements it would be better, but the data is so far spread that the illustration the test makes is perfect.

One thing you missed. You did the penetration at 0 fps as opposed to a moving arrow. Its like loading rifle ammo so the bullet touches the lands which creates more pressure than loading a couple thousandths off lands. Drive your truck and try to get over your curb. Its pretty easy if you're moving. Now pull your truck so the tires touch the curb and come to a stop. Now try to get over the curb, it will take a little more effort. Anyway, good video.

Have you ever tried hybrid heads? Like a fixed head with mechanical bleeders. It sound interesting. For me personally, I think you get more bang for your buck, literally and figuratively, when you use fixed heads anyways. It is easy to just touch up a used head and use it again. I got a full heart shot this past season, and the arrow went through skin, ribs, organ, ribs, and an elbow on the other side like it was nothing. Deer only went 50 yards. My luck with mechanicals has been far less. They work. But I just don't trust them.
