Have you seen Takin' Over the Asylum, with David Tennant and Ken Stott? It's only one short season, but it has a wonderful cast and great music and a terrific story. I'd say it is a comedy-drama. I found the DVD on Amazon, but I know there are other copies out there...

Try Dark on Netflix. It's very similar at the beginning.. It's Sci-fi Broadchurch... but even better imo.

Chris Chibnall's vision of the series was heavily influenced by the works of Thomas Hardy. The most powerful scene for me was the end of season 2 was when the Broadchurch community comes together to condemn & cast out Danny's killer. It was a cathartic experience expelling the rot so that the community could heal & grow.

A lot of his books covered themes like marital infidelity, family secrets and the endurance of the human spirit through suffering. You know, light reading😅 You did a great job of connecting the themes of each series with great insights. Thank you!

This series is worth to watch. Spent 3 days straight to finish it. No regret. Now I'm feeling empty. Thanks for making me to understand the series in different perspective as I focused more on DI Hardy. His character seems so close to me as we both have emotional struggle. He taught me that we cannot always be alone when facing conflict. Seek help to get different solutions.

An absolute masterclass in storytelling.

i loved the way alec and ellie developed over the seasons and how they helped each other with their own flaws, becoming closer in the process

yeah, they are so great and in season one, the way their relationship developes and the conclusion of who done it is so ingenious, for they managed to not only make it personal for her, who would have been impacted by pretty much everyone in the community, but him too, with how he grew to care for her and therefore was horrified at the reveal for what it ment to her, no matter how he detatched he managed to stay from the parents and anyone else

I remember spending the whole first season pouring over each episode multiple times trying to solve the case, and I was still surprised by who it actually turned out to be. It’s the only police drama that’s ever made me cry

It pisses me that this show is so criminally underrated. It's beyond outstanding, such a brilliantly written, acted and presented show. The cinematography was amazing

**SPOILERS** I really wish they also explored ellie’s grief.

Funny enough, I was drawn to this show after I came across the soundtrack. Olafur Arnalds made a score that still sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. It is so beautiful and captivating it feels as if I am swimming in the emotions it stirs. I never thought grief and pain could sound so... beautiful. So hearing this soundtrack I was drawn to experience the show. If the soundtrack was this good, then the show must be pretty damn good. And oh boy was I right. - My only complaint is that Season 1 was so heavy that Seasons 2 and 3 just couldn't match it. Personally I would've been perfectly content with the show ending with Season 1.

I almost forgot how good this show was, I've never heard anyone talk about it. How do you talk about so many obscure things and still somehow cover so many of my favorites?

I've said this before, but Broadchurch is an absolute masterclass in showcasing human emotion and drama whilst also telling an incredibly heartfelt, yet tragic narrative, to the likes that we may not see again for a very long time.

I just don't understand how Chris Chibnall was able to create such a masterpiece and yet was unable to do even decently as a showrunner for Doctor Who

I think it’s because he just didn’t want the job. He took it out of pressure, and you get the sense that he never really had any ideas. Here, this is HIS show. It works.

I FUCKING LOVE this show. I watched it maybe 5x since it was first released. It’s done so well and it so painful to watch, but also so refreshing how it handles topics like rape culture, and the realities of abuse (not the creepy guy in the alleyway, but someone you know who is able to “blend in” bc toxic masculinity makes it easy for them to do so). I’m referring to season 1 btw bc the dynamic and events between Danny and his murderer are much more common than people think. The soundtrack and cinematography alone keeps pulling me back. Amazing writing and acting and such complex characters and emotions. It’s oddly comforting, as a trauma survivor to watch, but also sometimes triggering. I agree that it’s not just a “murder mystery”. It’s about grief and some sort of healing, it’s about the human condition.

Beautifully expressed. It is about grief and trying to ‘move on’. How things can change in the blink of an eye. And how those who are left deal with the loss of a loved one. So very moving and thoughtfully written both the drama and your essay. Thank you.

I just started watching this. Holy cow what a show! That actress that plays ellie Miller is amazing

This show touched me in a way I didn’t think a tv show could.

It is great due to its serial format. You cannot develop complex mystery in a 45 minute or 1 1/2 hour show.

I'm watching Broadchurch for the second time, my daughter joining me. This series touched and affected me in so many ways that I struggled to understand, I just knew that it drew me in. Thank for putting my feelings and connection into the words I couldn't. I watch a lot of true crime and prefer non fiction, but Broadchurch had me from the get go and, is it weird of me to say this, I lived each and every episode? Well done to the makers of Broadchurch for such a magnificent series, and to you, My Little Thought Tree, for an awesome summing up!!

Just binged the 3 seasons in about a week, very sad to be finished with it! Everyone’s already said it but what an incredible show. The pacing, the writing, the acting-just brilliant!

Every shot in this series is fking incredible, and then you add the acting, plot and soundtrack. Absolute slow burn of a masterfully made show.

Thank you very much for this video. I remember finding the ending of Broadchurch to be confusing and unsatisfying. I didn't really understand why it was necessary at all. This video reframed the story for me and the central thesis. I still can't say I would find the ending satisfying by itself, but in a strange way this video helped me find closure regarding the strange emptiness I felt at the end of that series.

How do you have so little views? That's the real crime! Good job, keep it up!!

What an amazing video about a great show, thank you! I appreciated it even more because I don’t feel like rewatching it any time soon, or maybe ever. It was SO well done and it felt so real and somehow, even when I haven’t experienced anything like what happenned in the show, it just made me experience my own grief I still have to deal with. I don’t mean to make it sound like a bad thing, on the contrary, it’s even kind of therapeutic. But it’s so strong that I can’t bear it again. What a masterpiece.

I actually just finished this series. It was so good and I love that they never forget the original crime and the writing was so well done. The cast is amazing.

Broadchurch is my favorite show ever. It's just SO GOOD- it explored so many themes so gracefully and realistically. Watched this last night after binging season 1 and 2 over the past week, when the video got to the part about Season 3 I thought I'd go watch it, watched the whole series and cried at a TV show for the first time ever (specifically at the more emotional Mark scenes). Man, this show is something else, and I really relate to some of the themes it portrays which is why I think it hit so hard. Fantastic video, wish I could like it multiple times, more people need to see this masterpiece

Personally I think its good it ended the way it did. Else it might have come off as cheap or not as good as before. I'm just rewatching it over and over again and looking for something similar.

Great analysis, I can’t wait to watch more of your videos! I’ve never seen anything like Broadchurch. Series 2 and 3 are 10/10 television, but series 1 is 11/10. I just can’t fault it as a program, it’s completely flawless.

Crime dramas/murder mysteries don't usually grab me. I'm a big fantasy/sci-fi nerd, but Broadchurch is yet to be knocked down from the #1 spot of my favourite shows of all time. Game of Thrones' writing in the earlier seasons was incredible, the creative combination of the Wild West and Star Trek in Firefly was something I will love forever, the deep lore of extended Star Wars universe (before Disney fucked it all off) was so vast and enthralling, but nothing grabbed me as hard as Broadchurch. It was so real, so close to home, so easy to empathise with well written, beautifully acted characters. I couldn't get through a single episode without at least a tear in my eye, and episode 5 of season one, Jack Marshall's story, made me sob. No show before has since has hit me so hard in the heart as Broadchurch.

This show depicted grief so well... too well Actually, it depicts grief so well that it made me hate the show, even if it didn’t do anything wrong. It’s not the show’s fault that I couldn’t HANDLE watching it (ESPECIALLY the episodes after Joe’s confession) There’s nothing inherently wrong with Broadchurch... I’m just not ready to see this family deal with the impact of their boy’s murder. And that’s the point of the show! I’ll never BE ready. All I can do TRY to power through the show and relive all of the same feelings that Beth and Mark feel. Amazing review! You summed up the most important part of this show. You’ve gained a new loyal subscriber with just a couple of true statements.

Agree, Season one was well done and had me guessing all the way through.

The music and soundtrack add much to Broadchrch, establishing the mood along with the events and photography. Turn the music off on some of the shots without dialogue and notice that the magic is gone.

Cried the entire 3 seasons...... Broadchurch has made an impact in my life and it's such a great one

I absolutely loved this show, I think way more than my parents. We normally watch more action-y or fantastical shows like Doctor Who or the X-fikes, so when I bought this I don't think any of us knew what entirely to expect, I saw David Tennant and a murder mystery and was in, but it was so much more than that. So many times throughout the series, especially in season three, I heard lines delivered that felt so genuine and true, not overdramatized and tacky, and it was all so beautifully and perfectly done. It's not a feel-good show or one that makes your hear beat real fast, but it is incredibly done. It's tender when in needs to be, angry when it needs to be, so sad when it needs to be, and all throughout it never shirks away from the ugly parts of humanity so many shows hate to touch. Incredible watch, I'd definitely recommend it (but it is a roller coaster so of you haven't watched it look up some TWs).

I wish they handled his relationship with his daughter better, I get that he is so terrified of her ever getting hurt that he just pushes himself to work as hard as humanly possible to crack this case but like if she had been in physical danger at any point he would have 0 idea because he is too consumed by his work to remember his daugthers existence. I did wish they had more of a plotline around those photos being spread too like he threatned the boys about it but I am missing more of the entire him being there for his daughter and them talking about it seriously because she is having the most awful time it seems and then just sort of hugs her dad like everything is ok between them, without showing us why she isn't still rightfully pissed of at her dad.

I rewatched the show and finally also saw season 3. The first time I saw S1-S2 was five years ago and while I was very impressed by it then, it made a lot more sense to me now. My own personal life experience (some grief included) and the fact that I knew the big plot points allowed me to focus more on the little details in the characters, and I really understood some of their behavior now. Five years ago I was more irritated by some of them. So I would assume that your experience will probably allow you to find a deeper meaning and understand everyone's motivations a bit better. I found I enjoyed the show a lot more the second time around.

This analysis is so good!! Do you think Mark ever came back?? :/ Now going through a similar loss, I now know he definitely never came back 💔 I often come back to this analysis…it’s true doing good deeds helps make the pain hurt less!

I felt like some small storylines didn't come to conclusion either. Like we saw a episode where he went on a date, and then we literally hear nothing about what happened after.

Season 1 and 2 were really good, especially season 1, but season 3, while still pretty good on its own, feels extremely disjointed from the rest of the series, also final episode felt extremely rushed and weak as a conclusion to the series

Honestly the only real problem with the show was that in season one there were these very over dramatic slowmos with music in the background and sometimes it felt a tiny bit corny. It would ruin the whole scene for me because of the corny music in the back

Just started watching it, up too esp 6 now, hard to follow what they are saying,, On you tube no close caption, so have to play parts of it back,, Got one computer that I watch TV from sites like soap2day. It is on it the sound quality is better and it does have CC never heard of it Daveid T was the last Doctor that I liked even stop watching Doctor WHO,, what other series have he played in

Just watched the lot in a week for the first time, nearly perfect and at times deeply moving but couldn’t take it seriously when Lenny Henry turned up,not believable at all

Made the mistake of watching the American version of it,Tennant brilliant as usual,but the American casting, sigh...really wanted to love it to,but compared to the British cast...

Is it possible that this show is really a version of The Prisoner created by the Master to entrap several regenerations of the Doctor? He/She/They are all trapped in the emotional prison of this town, involving all of them living distinct human lives. Maybe the Doctor did this to themselves to learn something about humanity, or deal with the grief of the many friends and family they have lost throughout time.

I fall asleep as soon as I turn this show on and also vera

God, i remember being excited for him coming to Doctor Who but he just didn’t bring anything that worked.

How could he make such a good show, and then fuck up Doctor Who? Like, it’s as if they were made by two different people.

This show was horrible. I really can't understand why so many people praise it.

You talk way too much. And your voice is bland and boring. Listen to podcasts, or great story tellers, and learn from them. Listen to Classic Tales Podcast. The narrator, B.J Harrison, has a wonderful voice, great intonation, and makes the stories come alive!
