    I just lost my girl in Dec . These dogs are the best their bloodlines go back 1000 years and that alone says everything about them . Very loving and smart like you would never believe . I am going to be looking for another chocolate brown and white female to live the other half of my life with . They are your best friend and they are unbelievably smart . No matter where I had taken her she enjoyed it . I know leash laws but I never had to walk her on a leash she never bit a soul even an animal no aggression at all . Love this breed to death and I believe all kids should have one . 👍🏼👊🏼

    Hi Brody, I just thought I'd stop by and thank you. After watching your video months ago and searching for a good Brit breeder, we hooked up with the Beupre's and last week we brought home a 14 lb brown and white male we named Bentley. We couldn't be happier! They are great folks and their pups are perfect. Thanks for leading us that way!

    Your first dog? You seem to be doing everything right. This is a combo of a smart dog and a natural trainer. If you take him to training school and learn what is required for obedience trials, I'll bet you bring home ribbons. Congratulations to you both.

    Retrieving is not an easy thing to get your Brittany to do. The most important thing is to try not to get too frustrated (it's hard). Sometimes Harvey makes a perfect retrieve... Sometimes he just stands by the bird... It is a work in progress :)

    Son you need to become a professional trainer. This is one of the most obedient pups I have ever seen. What you have taught him is really good. I would not have went to the extreme that you did but a job well done.

    First off I want to say thank you for sharing your video and your pup is awesome. We are strongly considering a Brittany, but are unsure if we are an active enough couple for this breed. What is your experience with the amount of exercise your dog needs from day to day? I love to hunt and would love a dog to train and learn with as a team. However, realistically I could only hunt at my local club 2-3 times a month. Can a dog like this be happy playing fetch in the yard and going on a walk/run in the afternoon on work days? Can they be left alone for 8 hours in a large fenced yard and be happy? Also can they relax in an office environment if taken to work? I have never owned a bird dog or any larger dog for that matter, so I want to make sure we are a good fit for the breed we choose. Thank you again for sharing.

    Nice going. I'd rather see Harvey doing his work without treats though. I like a dog who works for the love of working rather than the expectation of food. Good job!

    Agreed! I have slowly turned treats just into praise and now I train him with a fine combo of both. I think conditioning him at a young age is much easier when you have such a treat driven dog... If they are properly conditioned you can easily change it up later on in life.

    How are you finding Harvey off leash when hiking, etc. Will he stay close or does his nose cause him to take off? I'm getting a Brit in Aug. and I'm concerned about that.

    ***** It's always tough to train a bird dog not to hunt. However, it was pretty easy to condition him to trail running vs. being in the field. Just lots of repetition. Practice major differences between hunting and hiking. Different collars, different tone... Just make sure you and your dog have a distinct pattern for each (and they are very different) and he/she will act accordingly. They are incredibly smart. Sometimes, too smart ;)

  • @brodykidd3825

    @brodykidd3825

    The Beaupre's had him and his litter on birds before they were 10 weeks old. I think that is the trick... Get your dog as 'birdy' as possible before introducing any kind of hard training or gunfire. Harvey was nuts about birds since we picked him up so I could begin training earlier and he was ready! I introduced him to hard gunfire when he was about 4.5 months old but began training for gunfire the day I brought him home. Check out this link: www.gundogsupply.com/sws-gun-shy.html Conditioning is everything

    Obedience training is very essential but teaching a pointing breed dog to sit is a NO NO. I taught my Setters and Brittanies to Come, Stay,Whoa and on command Fetch. You need to teach a pointing breed dog to be steady to wing and shot the rest will come naturally if he has the field bloodlines not bench and show. You have a nicely trained pup. Now get him in the field and let him use his nose.

  • @peshewa0529

    @peshewa0529

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yes I will. You want an obedient dog but you want it to hunt too. A pointing breed dog should be taught to come, heel, whoa and if you like stay. So when your hunting instead of your dog pointing it will have a tendency to sit when it finds game. You want your pup to point game birds and be steady to wing and shot. If you plan to hunt your pup you will need to teach it the above commands for pointing breed dogs. There are no short cuts when it comes to training a pup they are all different. I suggest you find some older training books. David Michael Duffy has some good advice in his books and so does Henry P. Davis. You can find there books on Amazon or E-Bay. This has been my experience with pointing breed dogs. I have raised English Setters, Brittany Spaniels for the past 46 years.If I can be of further assistance just let me know. I do not field trail my dogs, I train them for foot hunting individuals who just want to hunt and have some meat for the table or freezer. I hope this helps.

    ***** I forgot to add the name of the books. Duffy's book is called Hunting Dog Know How and Davis's book is called Training Your Own Bird Dog. Both are excellent books for the novice or even a so called expert. I hope this helps you in your training.

    Thanks for the comment @peshewa0529 You are completely correct when training a field dog. The books I read also give warning about teaching certain commands and sit is, like you said, a big No No. To be clear, I did not get Harvey for hunting and initially did not intend to hunt with him (I know I know, blasphemy). I fell in love with the breed as a child and always wanted a Brittany when I was growing up. I began training/conditioning the day I brought him home and my training was not bird dog specific. Harvey is one of the most loving, affectionate dogs and he is the best companion/friend someone could ask for. I made plenty of mistakes, as any first time parent will. That being said, I soon realized he was just as happy in the field as he was laying curled up on the couch eating my leftovers :) I started lightly training for the field because I can hunt the public grounds that are stocked just miles from my house. We go out about 20-30 times a season and Harvey works wonders in the field. Would he fail a field test?... probably... but that is 110% because of me. Do we get our bag limit when 'field trained' dogs and dog owners are walking back to their cars with nothing..? Every time! The point of this video was to show viewers how amazing this bloodline is. I am a total amateur in the field and Harvey does things I never trained him to do. But, I know my dog better than anyone and my dog knows me... We have spent so much time together that I read his signs/tells and he reads mine. We work the field in a very unconventional manner but I still eat pheasant :) A lot of it!!!! Isn't that the entire point of a bird dog? Get to the field, be safe in the field, work the field with your friend, come home and eat birds. To sum it up... 1. I am lucky to have this dog. 2. The bloodline is amazing. Thanks!

    Brody, I would be proud to own a Brittany like Harvey. Do not think I'm a know-it-all about training a gundog. But I've been hunting the biggest part of my life (I'm 63 years old) and I've had some great dogs and I've had some not so great but what really matters is that you and Harvey are really close and this helps develop a great relationship. I've always been a firm believer in obedience training with field training. I'm NOT a field trialer and I'm not interested in that. I want my hunting companion to hunt and point and if he retrieves then that's an extra bonus. Bloodlines are very important in hunting dogs, but most of the hunting breeds are all about winning field trials and not so much about pleasing there owner. That is why I'm dog less at this point in my life. I've had several breeds of dogs and only three have proved there worth for a person that wants to foot hunt with a dog and that's: English Setters, Brittany Spaniels and Springer Spaniels and I have raised all three. The only problem is that the great majority of hunting dog kennels concentrate on field trial dogs and as I said I could careless how many field trails a dog or kennel has won. You have the perfect companion because both of you have great admiration for one other and that's all that really matters. So young man keep up the good work, what you have accomplished is more than I've seen from any young man in a long time. If you ever want to talk about hunting birds just let me know. Thank you for your comments.
