Almost true. A mile is 5280 feet. One quarter of that is 1320 feet

@@doctoredable I realize this a year old comment, but top fuel doesn't run 1/4 mile anymore. Shortened it to 1000 ft after they were getting up to over 335 mph for a little while.

I remember watching the wide world of Sports way back in the 60's after one of the top fuel cars exploded a clutch and blew the car in half. The even was covered live for the first time, or one of the first times, and they weren't prepared for the downtime during an engine or clutch explosion. So they brought on some jerk physicist who said something like, all this is a waste of time. There is no way they can ever traverse the quarter mile in under 5 seconds, so why try. Well fuck you sir! They did it! And they went so fast doing it that they soon discovered that most of the tracks in the US didn't have enough runoff room to get the cars slowed down safely. So they decreased the distance of the race to 1000 feet instead of the former 1320 ft. Now look. 3.779 in a thousand feet? Come on now. What was wrong with the physicist's grain back in the 60's? Did they never hear of the rule, win if you can, lose if you must, but always cheat? A drag racer never plays by any physicists rules, ever! They invent them.

I think it's time for Top Fuel to go remote. Safety First. Then cars can be made twice as fast, pitting engineering and electrical prowness against different companies without risk to the drivers.
