I imagine the planning meeting was one of those stereotypical joke ones of people mulling about a table with various schematics and equations scattered all over. In the middle of the table there's a small model of the GAU-8 and then someone in complete frustration takes a model P-47 and slams it down on top of the GAU-8 model and then someone else was like, "Jones, you're an absolute genius!!!!!" And that becomes the pitch phrase of the A-10. "We're not putting the gun into an airplane, we're putting the airplane ON the gun.....Go with our idea and we'll throw in a titanium bathtub for free."

When i was a kid i had the privilege of not only taking a photo of myself with the plane parked and even touching it but also to see a live demonstration near the airstrip at the airshow Let me tell you one thing: that gun's armor-piercing incendiary round is like an inferno when it hits the ground, i could feel my face melting from 150-250 meters away from the impacts so it definitely wrecks more than havoc, it rains absolute armageddon on the enemy This plane is incredibly deadly to anything that exists, metal or flesh When they tell you the air around you burns and you start suffocating, thats not even half of it because it assumes you have not been burned alive before that even happens If the AC-130 is the angel of death well the A-10 is the angel of terror

You hit it right on. Sure, the F-35, and even F-16 (both thankfully have guns) have their places on the battlefield, but so does the A-10. That same brass would shit a hard turd if an F-35 pilot brought their aircraft 100ft above active combat to put rounds on target. In many cases the gun is the morale killer of the enemy over any rocket or bomb. Plus, when the pilot can bank at low altitude and give a salute to their comrades on the ground it gives that 19 year old a bit more hope that he's going to make it home, thereby keeping our morale high.

It could do with a decent targeting package, though. Binoculars don't really cut it when you're that high up and need to fly the plane at the same time. That said, the gun probably needs some tweaking, too, as it struggles against most "modern" armour (something something 10-15% pen rate over 10 strafes against 30+ year old tanks). Also needs a way to counter the new ManPADSs that are around today while it strafes, but that might require a whole-ass redesign.

I mean, you basically described the epitome of the USA there James. Most other nations look at the problem like, "How do we build an aircraft that can carry more armaments into the air?" The USA looked at the problem in an inverse manner. It wasn't how do we put more armament onto an aircraft?" It was, "How do we get this gun airborne?" In a sense the F-22 and F-35 have followed similar practices when you think about it. There very much so was this, "We've got this stealth technology. How do we fit a fighter inside it?!" rather than, "Okay we now have a fighter. What do we need to do to make it stealthy?"

This is one of the best A-10 documentaries I have seen. And as always nicely done guys.. The last A-10 was built in 1984. They just keep upgrading it. There is talk of a brand new version but as yet it's merely talk and dreams of what it may look like. Congress has tried again and again to cancel the project in favor of something new. But nothing has been put forth that will take on this role as well as the Warthog. I've seen the hog up close and even held some of the rounds from it's main gun. It sounds like someone ripping canvas when it fires It also has an unmistakable sound when it flies. Sort of like a high pitched whine

There is one huge difference in the ability of an A-10 and any "fast jet" replacement (F-16, F-35). That is loiter time over the target area. An A-10 can literally stay over a target area for hours at a time, and its relatively slow speed allows it to stay very close to that area. A fast jet's loiter time is measured in minutes (tens of minutes at best), and every run takes it miles away from the target area.

Fun fact: because the rounds are fired from the GAU 8A move faster than the speed of sound, you hear the rounds hitting their target before you actually hear the rounds being fired. And if all rounds were fired continuously, the plane would stall and fall out of the air! The hog is typically flown in pairs that enter the battle space and swoop in, alternating with one another in a scissoring sort of maneuver and then come around and hit again if targets were missed or added. It is a crazy, formidable aircraft flown close enough to the ground for pilots to look into the eyes of their targets. None of the fighter jet pilots can say the same!

When my son was in Afghanistan in the Marines in, I believe 2005, he was a forward observer and designated marksman among other things. He would call for what they thought was appropriate weaponry to deal with the Taliban, whether tanks or helicopters or whatever. He had A-10's come in off and on and though he was a PFC part of that time before becoming a corporal due to Operation Whalers, there was a female pilot who was an officer that was one of his favorites because not only was she good at her job, but he could flirt with her. Marines get the job done whatever the risks, I guess, especially when you're 19. Also, though depleted uranium isn't radioactive, the dust it makes is toxic, which is where the increased risk of cancer comes from. Some Abrams tanks have side armor made of depleted uranium and the people dealing with it have to be careful with it for that reason. I guess it would be somewhat comparable to asbestos in that way.

We have several stationed at a base north of Detroit, which used to be stationed at a base in Battle Creek, and every so often (not so much since the move, but sometimes still), they'll come fly some training maneuvers over my town, and maybe stop at our airport to refuel before heading back home. Lemme tell ya, even though you know that they're not loaded and they're just doing some practice flights, when you hear those engines and see that nose pointing directly at you while you're watching from your balcony, it's just a LITTLE bit of a "holy crap" moment! 😄

They got a detail wrong, the shells aren't retained to prevent damage, that's an easy enough problem to handle. The problem is that when you expend that much ammo, that is that large, that quickly, if you eject the shells to center of mass shifts so radically, so quickly that it can destabilize the aircraft and make it very hard to control, so it shifts them back into the fuselage in a way that keeps the weight near the planes centerline, also prevents needing to worry about assembling ammo chains that drops lengths, keeps the belts fully reusable. So while it may help prevent damage, in one way, the primary reason for keeping the shell casings on board is to help reduce the rapid shifting of weight when the gun is operating, it still shifts the planes center of mass, but it helps quiet a bit using the spent shells like ballast.

This communication includes the A10 can review all weapons on surrounding airborne assets and request control of the weapon on a plane nearby. This is also expected to the new x drone called the ultimate wingman and other drones. The rewinging also allows the A10 to be loaded out with all the Air Force weapons and better optics. Thanks for sharing. American loves the under dog that wins and saves the day.

one update since this video came out is that the price of buying a brand new F-35 all spect out for ground support, is actually cheaper than to buy the necessary upgrades for the A-10 to carry out the same roles. Except for the gun, the F-35 can pretty much carry out the same duties as the A-10 but for less and with better sensors and technology to aid it and nearby allies. Not trying to diminish the use of the A-10, but shows its only a matter of time before it too retires and makes room for the next generation.

Although ground troops resoundingly love the A-10 arriving overhead, the critics of the A-10 are usually not disputing its affect on the ground in a high intensity battlefield. They are pointing out some shortcoming the A-10 has when compared to other aircraft. Although it is really fast when compared to foot soldiers, tanks and jeeps, its actually pretty slow compared to other aircraft. That makes it vulnerable to other aircraft. All that really means is that it is tougher to use prior to air superiority being established. But once the F-16's, F-18's and F-35's have established air superiority, the A-10 is free to move in and do what it does for the ground troops. In that role, it really has no rivals. The gun, the bomb and missile loads, the durability and the loiter time (amount of time it can linger over a battle) is unmatched. Its relative slowness becomes an advantage over an aircraft like an F-16 in that it moves slow enough for the pilots to get a decent view of their target. An F-16 comes in so fast it has less time to look over the entire area. It basically needs to have a target pointed out for it so it can more or less be guided into the exact target and take a few quick (but accurate) shots. An A-10 can visually get a better understanding of the layout of the area. Its hands down the greatest aircraft ever created for the purpose of taking on entire battalions of enemy tanks and other ground targets.

Plus the cost of maintenance is going to be much higher for the F-35 than the A-10. While it would be nice to have another aircraft capable of of ground support I see no reason to retire the A-10.

Simple reason. They cant make money with the A10 that is cheap while a new extremly expensive and complexe machine brings the government and weapon manufacterer more money. They dont really care anymore nowadays if something works really well, as long as it brings them money.

I hope you don't take this as criticism, but as knowledge to make your channel better. Your thumbnail uses the term fighter in reference to the A10. The letter at the beginning is a description of the planes mission. A = attack F = fighter C = cargo O = observation P = patrol Plus others such as SR, FA, AC and others I can't remember. Love your content and as a grandparent I love seeing Archie change as he grows.

An A-10 costs $10 million, an F-16 costs $63 million. The math is pretty obvious buy what you need for a fighter, then use the rest of the money to buy A-10s. You don't discontinue a plane designed for ground support. Yes, you can use a fighter for some ground support with PGMs, but a fighter can only do a limited amount of ground support with PGMs. The only costs I'm not aware of is whether a drone might be cheaper (or whether a drone version of this plane could be made).

After serving in the Marine Corps being supported by these aircraft, my husband spent 11 years working on loading these hogs and then added repairing and maintaining the GAU 8A Gatling gun both in Michigan with the Michigan ANG 127th Wing and during some pretty remarkable deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kuwait. There is no more proven, effective and reliable air frame, and the close air support it provides to Marines and soldiers. Despite it not being pretty or high tech, it does its work and has far fewer things in or on it to go wrong. Honestly, it’d be perfect for the Ukrainians!

The A-10 was built for one job, Close Air Support. The F-14, F-15 and now F-22 were/are built as Interceptors and Air superiority fighters. The F-16, F/A-18, and the newer F-35 are 'General Purpose' fighters. Although, I have my doubts about the F/A-18. Really though, smaller planes can be classified into 3 roles: Ground Support Air Superiority General Purpose. IMHO, the U.S. is going the wrong way in pushing GP 'fighter' aircraft over everything else. Thinking that a 'super-modern' F-35' can be as or more effective than a 60-year-old A-10 with a massive gun, when in the same situation. Or that a 'super-modern F-35' could even beat a previous gen pure dogfighter/interceptor like the F-15 or F/A-18. The F-35 is a "Jack of all Trades, Master of None." It was a waste of engineering talent. That is NO WAY to run a military superpower.

I love your fascination with our military equipment, this being one of them. What made this one so interesting to you? Of course, being an American, I am partial to our stuff, but after watching many hours of WWII history here on KZread, like probably well over 100, I have a lot of respect for the aircraft and tanks and things of England. Your fighters and bombers and other weapons were quite good, though to me, though the Lancaster was an excellent bomber, in some ways more capable than the B-17 and B-24, especially with the weird "Dam Buster" bombs which no other bomber could do, it's pretty ugly. But the A-10 isn't pretty either and look what it does. Not to mention, the first real jet engine was invented by one of your guys and he did an amazing job The only thing I thought was just plain stupid was fitting the excellent Spitfires and Hurricanes with .303 caliber machine guns. Why would you use a hopped-up rifle cartridge to shoot at enemy aircraft, rather than the excellent cannons that were used later or something like the .50 caliber machine guns ours used, which we could have provided under lend-lease. They could have developed it along with the aircraft and it would have made a very effective plane even more so. Oh well, who knows what they were thinking, but it just doesn't seem logical. Otherwise, I have a lot of respect for your weaponry, including the odd modern bullpup rifles. But our company Springfield Armory is doing a semi-automatic type of bullpup too, so there must be some interest in them here. Anyway, I hope all three of you are doing well and it's always good to see you. If you happen to make it to the NW on your upcoming trip, I would hope to maybe meet up.

Indeed. I don't get people arguing against giving at least some A-10's to Ukraine. They say it is a contested air space due to SAM's and MANPAD's but every point outlined in the original video applies perfectly to Ukraine: low cost, ability to run without significant infrastructure, extreme surviveability etc.

If somebody describes the A-10 as a fighter, please laugh in their face. The A-10 was never intended for air combat against other jet aircraft. It was built to destroy tanks and other ground targets. It carries some air-to-air missiles for self defense, or engaging enemy helicopters.

  • @trevorjrooney
    @trevorjrooney4 ай бұрын

As a counterpoint to this video, watch LazerPig's video about the A-10. The aircraft is downright dangerous to EVERYONE on the ground, not just the enemy, and the upgrade package to fix its issues, specifically the radar and other associated identification systems, costs nearly as much as a brand new F-35. Sure, it can take hits, but they do not fly again after getting their crews home, which is the important part, but no, they do not get repaired and sent back out. No aircraft does though.
