Bird is a kid from a small town called French Lick in Indiana. Furthest thing from "being from Boston" you could imagine. But they sure do claim him now even if us Hoosiers fight that as much as we can.

@@Kirillpistov I can see how it looks weird, but the term Hoosier for "people who live in Indiana" pre-dated the university and still applies. So even if you're at the colleges in Terre Haute, Lafayette, South Bend, Muncie, etc., you're still a Hoosier. And that's coming from someone who could care less about IU.

Bird is not from Boston, but a small town in rural Indiana. Legend has it that Bird used to play pickup basketball after with the older, black employees at the hotel he worked at. Supposedly, that where he learned his high release jump shot, (to avoid it being blocked), and where he learned to talk trash.

Pat Riley, the famous Showtime Lakers coach, said they were all scared of Larry, coaches too. If there was a last second shot to be taken by Boston, Larry demanded the ball, and everyone in the arena knew where the ball was going. He was big at 6'10", and no one player could stop him one on one. Pat Riley said they just prayed Larry didn't catch the in bound pass. If he did, it was all a matter of was he going to make it or miss it. They couldn't stop him from getting a shot off.

Met Larry when he played at Indiana State. My ex wife went there and he was at the same party. He is much bigger than you would think he is. He was towering over everyone. I'm 6'2" and he made me feel short. He was very nice but didn't talk much and stuck to his little clique. Met him one other time 20 years later at his car dealership. Got a jersey signed for my nephew. Very quiet guy off the court.

He's from French Lick, Indiana. Larry is one of (I think) only 3 guys to win 3 consecutive MVPs. He was the 1st player ever to have a 50/40/90 season. Thats 50% from the floor, 40% from 3 pt range and 90% free throws. He then did it again the following year. He won the 3pt contest 3 years in a row. The final time he did it without even taking off his warm-up jacket.

My Uncle had 4 season tickets for the Charlotte Hornets and we went all the time so I got to see so many greats play in person. It was a wonderful time to be a fan. My team was Boston before Charlotte got a team in 88'. but Bird was, is and always will be my favorite player. As Coach Pat Riley once said " If I need a shot to win the game I want Jordan. Bird played at Indiana State University which unlike powerhouse Indiana, was completely unknown across the country. So as a kid I remember just seeing box scores that this guy Bird was the leading scorer and leading rebounder in the country and always had this image of a 6'9" black guy who was this incredible athlete. Then a few years ago at some Hall of Fame induction, Nolan Richardson who was a legendary African-American coach at Arkansas was telling a story that he only ever heard the games on the radio and he kept hearing "Birrrd shoots and scores! Birrrd hits another one! Birrrd steals the ball!!!" And he said to himself, "Man, who is this Bird? That brother can really play!" Then when my favorite team, The Celtics drafted him, I thought it was a terrible pick after seeing him play against Magic Johnson in the National Championship. Yeah, it didn't take long to realize the error of my judgment.

Hey hey Fellas! In case you didn't know, when Doc Rivers was explaining that his teammates were fined for cheering on Larry, allow me to tell it. So, one of Bird's teammates, Kevin McHale had (only about 9 days earlier) had broken Larry's previously set all-time scorer for the Celtics, then Kevin topped that with 56. As Kev was leaving that game, Larry asked him, why he didn't go for 60? Then told Kevin "that may not last and I'll break it against Atlanta, Doc Rivers team. Well, all that got out into the media so the Hawks knew what Larry's plan was for that night. WELL, in March, 1985, Bird dropped 60 on the Hawks, but by the 50th point, the Hawks bench wanted Larry to keep going and since Atlanta was down by SO much they started cheering on this phenomenal shooting that Bird was putting up that game.. The best part? Bird didn't didn't miss ANY attempted shot that game and it was spectacular! Watching from Florida and a girl who grew up watching Bird play his entire career. Take care, Aszneth PS: Larry is from a small town called: French Lick, Indiana (a state where basketball at all levels is a religion!)

Larry was the best player in the NBA in the 80s hands down and this is a a time you had the Dream Team in the league. It was also no coincidence that MJ didn't start winning anything until Larry retired...In my opinion, he was the best all-around SF ever and a top 5 player of all time....Think about it...the man would tell the opponents what he was going to do before a play just to challenge himself

Larry Bird is NOT from Boston, he’s from French Lick Indiana. As a child he’s father struggled with employment and keeping food on the table and the power on. Larry has gone on to say that they went many days without food. He’d say that on a lucky night, he’s parents would stop by a restaurant and grab a bunch of free jam, catsup, mayonnaise and mustard packets to bring home along with a loaf of day old bread so that they can pick out a packet to smear on the bread to eat. His mother eventually left he’s father and married someone else and took the kids. This caused Larry’s father to go into a deep depression that caused him to begin to drink. One day he decided to pull a gun out and blow his head off. Larry was still close to his father and would frequently stop by his house to check on him. That day he discovered his father’s body and his brain matter all over the room. Traumatized, he vowed never to allow himself to be in a situation where he would be unemployed. Seeing that his small town would have nothing to offer him in the future, Larry trained vigorously day and night every chance he had pushing himself harder each time to be the best he could be at basketball. Till eventually he earned a scholarship to Indiana State University and then eventually being drafted to the Boston Celtics. Much of Larry’s attitude on the court was impart to his fear that he would lose his job like his father did and suffer the same fate. That’s why he would talk trash and play so aggressively.

I feel like Bird isn't considered a top 5 player because physically he wasn't super athletic. But to be honest, he's more athletic than people think. He's just awkward and actually looks like a Bird haha

You should check out the game when Larry Bird got bored one night, and decided to play the entire game left handed😂 Boston won the game. Bird got a triple double and scored 47 points!

There will never ever ever ever be another Larry Bird! Magic Johnson did not lie about that.... Larry Bird was the last great white American NBA player and that is 1 million percent facts!! Any other white guy who has dominated the NBA they were not American white they were European white just like the current White players dominating right now all European.. Larry Bird really is him he didn't want to be the Great White Hope but it just happened to be he was and white or black or whatever color you are doesn't really matter Larry Bird was the best out there my dude played the last 4 years of his career with a broken back install balled out on everybody

I just wish the conservative American media would stop pushing to try to make Larry Bird the greatest player ever.
