The thing to undestand about college football is thtat it PRE DATES the NFL. And these teams are all over the country (often in rather small towns) rather than in the largest cities. PLus tickets are cheaper and students usually get in free. People with no pro team close by follow their local college team and the athletes are at a pro level. They just don't get paid a salary. College football is like the minor leagues of American Football. But some programs have such storied histories that people genuinely prefer following their college teams to pro teams. I grew up in Tennessee and before the Tennessee Titans NFL team moved there from Houston, we had no professional team in Tennessee so I followed the University of Tennessee. The nearset pro teams were in Atlanta, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and New Orleans. Today there are closer teams like the Titans and the Carolina Panthers in the NFL. But all around the country in small college towns in the autumn on Saturday afternoons the towns swell to two or three times their size and the people flood in to tailgate and then attend the games. Restaurants and hotels make a lot of money. You should check out college football tailgate parties.

What planet are YOU on, that you think students get free tickets? What are you on about? No, not at all. Student tickets are often an option tossed in with tuition payment, but they are most certainly not free, to any school with a real fanbase. Maybe that is true at Tulane or something, but not P4 universities.

12:37 is Florida State University Seminoles. The Seminole Nation inhabited the southeastern US territory before the Spanish took it and, later, it became an American territory and state. The war cry, tomahawk chop, the native American warrior on the painted horse (Chief Osceola) with the flaming arrow is to pay respect to the Seminole Nation.

The best tradition hands down was not in the video. It is called the Hawkeye wave. At the University of Iowa the football stadium sit right across the street from the hospital. On the 13th floor of the Stead Children’s Hospital, pediatric patients are given the opportunity to watch the game as the hospital is tall enough to look into the stadium. At the end of the first quarter all players, staff, fans, announcers and so many more turn around and wave to the children that are hospitalized watching the game from the 13th floor. It is a tradition that brings people to tears to see the children get the encouragement and support from everyone.

The biggest College Football stadiums are also bigger than the biggest NFL stadiums. The first one you see, Michigan, is the largest football stadium in the USA. That goal post weighs around 500 pounds. College Football is much older than the NFL, so it has rivalries and traditions that are older than the NFL. Our military academies also have College Football teams. Army, Navy, and Air Force. The Army Navy game is a very big deal. Air Force vs Army, or Air Force vs Navy, don't get as much hype, but are still important. College Football season starts in September, and runs though the end of November. December and January have bowl games. During football season, you have high school games on Friday night, College games mostly on Saturday, and NFL on Sunday, Monday Night, and Thursday Night.

The BIG Ten, the largest, oldest and wealthiest conference in the US, originally all upper Midwest schools, is where many of college football traditions started,, from first marching band to break ranks and form letter on field (Purdue) to the country’s largest stadiums to birthplace of college football overall (more recently added Rutgers University of NJ). In the South the SEC conference is football crazed too. The best games and fandom are in those two conferences, with a few others like Notre Dame. It’s important to remember many if these schools have 30 to 65K 18 to 22 year old students living in walking distance to the games, a huge party beyond game itself

The white stadium is Penn State, which is 104k +. The one with the military-looking band just after is Texas A&M, which has a very large ROTC (Reserve Officer Training Corps) program. If it looks a little rowdier to start than your average World Cup game, it's because as a player, you need to put yourself into a certain mindset to play the game. Adrenaline dulls the pain, and what better way to get it pumping? Many of the fans played as kids, and it's old habits, plus it's just a great rush :)

Florida state Seminoles tomahawk chop. The university of Florida is their main rivals and our tradition is the gator chomp. We love bashing the Seminoles during games. It’s always half the stadium is chomping and the other half is chopping. It’s all in fun. The two schools were established very closely together on the calendar year. We’ve always been rivals. Florida state is more the type of school for engineering or business but not great for much else. The university of Florida has graduated more medical doctors, practical engineering, and every science related field is full of former students. The medical students with the engineering students actually together came up with a ventilator alternative that saved lives during the pandemic. It was never patented as they believed it should be for the public to use. Now every hospital in the country uses it as a step before a real ventilator meaning less people have to use one and it saves lives.

If you guys can get to Dublin on Aug 24th, FSU Seminoles (the ones with the horse and Chief Osceola, ) will be playing Georgia Tech Yellowjackets. Most likely the horse, Renegade, will not be shipped overseas and it won't be as electric as seeing a game in Doak Campbell stadium. But it's closer to you. If you get a chance to see a really good game in Tallahassee, like a rivalry, it's insane. It gets so loud you have to scream at the person next to you so they can hear you.

Many of these are also the 'big game' where teams have long standing rivalries with specific other schools/teams. So while if you go to any game it will very much be like this the biggest of the year is the rivalry game. Its often the 'homecoming' game where alumni are especially welcome back and they put on the biggest show possible. Most divisions have about 10 teams but there is one that is always seen as the long standing riverlie. Another thing to consider is that professional teams can move around and are only in a few big cities really. So college teams early on filled that gap of providing a local team to follow. Even if people didn't go to the local school they might follow the team. Now they have moved into essentially the development teams for the professional leagues, the only sport that still has a rich development system out of college is baseball, again for historic reasons.

many of the stadiums they've shown are close to 100 years old. And a good number of them seat about 100,000. Of course, there have been quite a few million in improvements over the years. The atmosphere at LSU on a Saturday night is hard to duplicate. Wisconsin had the tradition of playing "Jump Around" between the 3rd and 4th quarters. The entire stadium sways. The site of Wisconsin's stadium (Camp Randall) dates back to it's days as a US Civil War (1860's) training location.

I went to a USC vs UCLA Baseball game. They have an infamous cross-town rivalry. Obviously, it doesn't compare in size or energy to a Football Game. But the high level of trash talk between fans & opposing teams might be worth a look if baseball is in season. The smaller crowds are intimate allowing people to hear each other & visiting teams are usually in state or relatively short travel so Friends & Family of the visiting team might have a large presence even at an away game. Most of the time the insults are nasty but some can be very clever & well-timed. I've seen umpires toss rowdy fans, I've seen players go into the stands to fight & probably the funniest is parents from opposing teams and parents from the home team get into it. My brother played for San Diego State against Hawaii in Hawaii and the fans knew personal stuff including our mom's name. I'm amazed it doesn't come to blows more often.

The team you saw where you first said it sounded country was Alabama's stadium. They were playing Dixieland Delight by the band Alabama, but the fans add they're own lyrics at the end "Fuck Auburn, and Tennessee, and LSU too!"

You guys can catch Florida State (the native team with the fire stick thing) versus Georgia Tech in Dublin, at Aviva Stadium on August 24th, 2024. Last year, or maybe the prior year, the credit card machines broke, so they gave out beer for free. With any luck, it will happen again. The pictures of blokes with one free beer in each hand, were hilarious.

When I was in college and we tore the goal post down there was a bar about 1.5 miles away that offered free beer for 1 hour if we got the goal post all the way there. We then cut it in to about 1 foot pieces to take home as a keep sake.

There’s absolutely nothing like college football on a Saturday night my friends! Fans are a million times better than fans of any other league (including the pros), no matter the sport. There’s nothing that comes close to the passion & love that fans have for their particular schools. It’s a beautiful thing. If y’all ever find your way to the states, come to Louisiana & I’ll take yall to Death Valley (LSU Tigers)! I’ll have gear ready for yall, great food, drinks, & one of the best, most exciting atmospheres in all of college football! Especially if you come on a week when it’s a big rival game (Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, A&M, Etc). But, no matter where yall end up when you come, every school has amazing, unique traditions, so you almost can’t go wrong almost anywhere you go….. Almost….. But yall got a place to stay in Louisiana for sure, for as long as yall want!

The capacity at Michigan stadium (Mr Brightside) is 107,601. The average attendance for games is 110,000 tho. It's the 3rd biggest stadium in the world with one in N.Korea and India having #1 and #2. Several college stadiums are around 100,000. Most NFL stadiums are 10x nicer, but only seat around 60,000.

What you see on this video is a college football(American style) tradition where a lesser team at their home field upset a better team, especially if that team they just beat was a Nationally ranked in the top 25 team, which mean after the game the ESPN net work will broadcast the highlights of this game across the country to give this underdog school national exposure.
