    The drone footage has given me a new very 3D appreciation for the battle. As a bit of a military history nerd, it’s an oft missed perspective in the black and white maps of most publications. Thank you for this series! Enjoy the snow tomorrow ;)

    The dynamic of the battle, and the contraposition with the results of the defense of Rorke's Drift, is quite an explanation of why the Romans learned (the hard way) to build a fortified camp at the end of every march and, quite impressively, even in the face of a deployed enemy or as a battle maneuver in itself (but this requires the capacity to keep the fighting enemy at bay, and the whole of it, with only a part of the available forces, while the rest prepares the camp). On the contrary, a line deployment in absence of unpassable ground on the flanks, or, even better, of features that funnels the enemy into the front of battle line, and in front of an enemy with an abundant advantage of numbers could be tenable only if it is complemented by superior maneuverability and the capacity of effective fighting during, or in alternation with, the maneuver, because, of course, there is no reason for that enemy not to try to swarm around the open flanks even if engaged in the frontal battle. It is clear the conditions for a line battle were not met at Isandlwana, and, yes, hindsight is 20/20, but the failure was not being prepared for this scenario *before* the battle took shape.

    I've just stumbled across these videos and they are awesome. They are far better than 'professional' TV documentaries. I've read the books you mentioned but always had difficulty picturing the terrain. I can't believe how good your videos have been and which really shed light on the battle and why it all went wrong. The British were doomed from the very start but for most of the battle, to the British soldier out on the firing line it probably looked like one more victory. When the end came, it came very quickly. For those pouring out comfortable volleys on the left, when they looked back towards the camp it must have been a massive shock to see what was developing behind them.

    Christ almighty, how is this not on something like the Discovery/History channel or something similar, it's at least a hundred times better than any of the poxy shite they put on there, and you should be getting paid for such amazing work. Seriously though, you've done such a great job on this, especially with the drone and Google maps(?) footage showing us how the battlefield and the forces involved were actually orientated, I've heard the many names of the ridges and hills surrounding Isandlwana a thousand times in other videos about the battle, but nothing that ever gave such detail to where you could almost feel like you're there. This has to be one of the best documentaries I've ever seen done, KZread or not. Amazing work Rob, you're a class act in my opinion.

    @britishmuzzleloaders I have been reading about the Anglo-Zulu war since I was a child and have been to Isandlwana many times and walked the fugitives track at least six times and that is a superb video Rob, truly one of the best things one can find on the battle when combined with the rest of your excellent series. Your historical details on how the companies would have withdrawn were especially interesting. A few points I think worth bringing out. Firstly this was the first British experience of fighting the Zulu, rather than the Xhosa in the Cape Province (where the 1/24th saw action in 1877-78). The Zulu had a very different fighting style as well as much larger numbers. I think it is well worth bringing out that Durnford, who was senior to Pulleine, asked for regular infantry support when he left camp with his Natal Native Horse, etc and seemed to think, at that time, that the Zulu forces intended to attack the rear of Chelmsford's force on the Mangeni. Pulleine refused, but I think that that request might well have had something to do with Pulleine over extending his line, on the British right, to try to support Durnford in his stand in the donga after Durnford fell back towards the camp. Pope's company, in particular, were a very long way from the camp when Durnford's mounted infantry mounted up and fell back, leaving the British infantry right flank open and in the air. Finally, after Isandlwana, the British started to develop the multi unit 'British square' formation that started at the battle of Ulundi where the British Army finally defeated the Zulu, and became common later in the Sudan in the 1880's when fighting vast numbers of fast moving enemy troops who intended to outflank a British force and try to charge home in overwhelming numbers. Again, thank you for a great video.

    It all just melts away when the Zulu numbers become apparent... anybody could have done anything,.... it wouldn't have mattered... with th possible exception of a very select and finely tuned solution... If a coy or two went out with Durnford, they'd have been swallowed up with the Rocket battery, eventually..... so may what ifs make for great discussion

    My great great grandfather faught in the second Boer War with the royal lincolnshire regiment and had seen action in the Megaliesberg Mountains and then was there for the annexation of the Transvaal too from what I've found in family history, also spend some time in India before and after the boer war up until the start of the first wold War but I'm not sure if this was with the army or personal/business reasons. Very interesting to see the rifle in action and the tactics he would have been using.

    @@britishmuzzleloaders he joined 2 years after the first boer war and I know he did have a Marine Henry to start with and kept it as it was handed down in the family, also had a Wembley revolver and cuple of swords too. I have read his diaries and he lived a very interesting life, he only married for 1 year and then went travelling the world until he died in 1968 at 101 by jumping off a bridge because in his words "I've lived longer and did more than I ever expected I would, now I have nothing left todo". During both world wars he's actives and whereabouts are very sketchy and he met some people that the British government would never admit they was in Communications with.

    Britishmuzzleloaders, I have liked the series a lot and when it is done I will rewatch from beginning to end. This effort shows what youtube creators can do ! I do have some odd questions 1) Do you think the Zulu's would have known the different bugle calls. Would they have known the bugle call foe retire ? 2) Would the men on the line have only had the ammo that each man carried or would they have a mule or two carrying ammo ? 3) Durnford's men who went back for ammo, would they have each carried a case of ammo, or got a mule loaded or maybe a wagon to come back with them ?

    I do not think that the Zulus would have known the bugle calls... no. Ammo was resupplied, as mentioned in the video, yes... as for Durnfords men, they would have carried what they could....

    In my case was walking Omaha and Utah. I was there with vet's of W W II. One of whom was a bugler. It was the week before Memorial Day that year so the cemetery was being cleaned. If you have seen Saving Private Ryan I walked down the path they filmed. The bugler played Taps from the monument at one end. There were maybe 200 people there. As the first note sang out everybody stopped. By that last drawn out note I doubt there was a dry eye there. Mine were not. Never forget that.

    I worked in a quartermaster stores in West Berlin in the early 80s. I remember the Quarter Master telling me that in the event of the Russians attacking he was permitted to issue each man with 100 rounds and no more, until ordered to do so. In a Sterling submachine gun that’s around 20 seconds of shooting, against the Russian army. We’ve not learnt much !

    Rob - an excellent series which really helps visualise what the Ground was like. Are you going to discuss myths and folk law in your next video as well as consider other options which might have changed the time. Myths Ammo boxes screwed down. Coiled brass cartridges - sticking in rifle Other Options Would a square from the outset with artillery and ammo inside with wagons used have held the Zulus or would they have always won on sheer weight of numbers. Also what was the break down of casualties on both sides?

    No one really know WRT to the casualties, not least because nobody really bothered to count them at the time. It seems reasonable to assume they were in the thousands though. Chelmsford had the Queen on his side, which helped a lot. The story that was spread at the time was that there was basically a cockup with the ammunition, which was an easier sell to the public than the idea that one of the Empire's general screwed up and got part of his column massacred by a bunch of guys with spears and flintlocks.

    You make my day my friend. Not only the final act came lot sooner than I expected, there will also be a another "final considerations" video. As usual, hugely informative and engaging. You're quite the master narrator. But not many master narrators are able to go as in depth as you. I'm just left with a few questions 1) I've documented myself about the zulu's disemboweling practices. I wonder if there could have been some instances of torture or abuse on still living prisoners. I say so because in the sketch briefly showing the battlefield at 36:55 ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/jGx81c-ceLKae8Y.html ) some of the bodies seems to be tied to ground with ropes. 2) Given the situation in the morning of the 22nd, there is something Pulleine could have done to avoid utter disaster? I'm wondering if deploying the line of the 24th closer to the camp could have changed the outcome of the battle. Could he have created a safe redoubt by hastily pulling the wagon in a circle in the first moments of the battle when the line was successfully keeping the zulus at bay?

  • @britishmuzzleloaders

    @britishmuzzleloaders

    3 жыл бұрын

    Lots to discuss for sure... I think that the disembowelling is pretty much accepted as stated... always room for more good research though... Being tied to the ground would only work once... once others saw it they'd of died fighting back rather than await what was in store... not something I'd tend to consider... As for tactical decisions, there are many and varied... we'll talk about them in the follow on video 🙂

    I have a question about the battle , Was there any chance of the British forces surviving Isandlwana , like having the camp further up the slops of Isandlwana or was it just shear numbers that won and no matter what they did they where never going to survive ?
