For decades, when opposition goalies take goal kicks, Mexican fans yell “eeehhhhh… puto!” when the ball is struck. It can be translated to a few different things but one of them is “faggot.” They’ve been repeatedly warned but don’t seem ready to stop anytime soon. The ref called the game five minutes into added time when they did it a 2nd time.

30 years? US bettering Mexico started in the 2000s. June 11, 2000 with 3-0 win to be exact. The problem with Mexico is that their fans are historic, just like Dallas Cowboys fans. Since the above mentioned game until now, US holds an 18-8-9 (W/D/L) record over Mexico.

There’s another highlight clip where McKennie did hook the crook of his arm around a Mexican players neck and used that as leverage to try to throw him down. The two American reds were provoked but did warrant reds. The 2 Mexican reds were deliberate and there were a few other Mexican players that should of also gotten reds. Honestly CONCACAF should be considering additional fines/penalties on Mexico for the actions of their players and fans in that game. That being said I have no idea why the Mexican goalie (Ochoa) got a yellow- he was trying to break up the scrum and props to that Mexican bench player who helped extradite McKennie from that 1st scrum.

Nothing warms an American supporter's heart like two Englishmen discussing U.S. v. Mexico! As many here have said, Mexico dominated the U.S. for most of the 20th Cent esp. in the absence of a U.S. professional league. Things started to shift in the 90s. Despite our famous "Dos y Cero" (2-0) WCQ victories, Mexico & the U.S. each took their share of points in head-to-head matches. No longer. In the past 5+ years, the tide has completely turned. Successive waves of American youth (Pulisic, McKennie, Adams, Dest) ply their trade in top leagues while Mexico's glory days (Rafa Marquez, C. Blanco, L. Hernandez) are firmly behind it. You can read about it elsewhere, but the use by Mexico supporters' of discriminatory language involves shouting "Puto" - the Spanish word for a male prostitute akin to the "F" slur in English - at the opposing keeper as he lines up to take a goal kick. Elsewhere on YT. someone made a point that, as their side's fortunes have cratered, Mexican supporters doubled down on the "Puto" chant, despite threats of match bans in order to seize control of the narrative. In effect, Mexican supporters actively seek to elicit FIFA penalties in order to (a) demonstrate their power as supporters, and (b) their desire to burn everything down in protest of their side's poor results, esp. vs. the U.S. It makes perfect sense. If you have little agency over your life, the last area you have power over is the ability to upset authorities - even your own - by chanting something you know will invite censure! Lastly, there is nothing as insane as CONCACAF WCQs abroad or matches against Mexico on U.S. soil. The 2021 Nations' League Final btwn the U.S. & Mexico (3-2) was utter madness. The U.S. side was drenched by liquid thrown onto the sidelines during goal celebrations w/ one missile hitting Gio Reyna on the head and knocking him to the ground. European sides are used to their supporters battling each other outside stadia grounds during WCQs. In CONCACAF away matches, those battles are waged IN the stadium btwn home supporters and the U.S. side! Urine and missiles are an everyday phenomenon. This match gave you a taste of the insanity that regularly unfolds in CONCACAF and esp. btwn Mexico and the U.S. - on the pitch and in the stands!!! MADNESS!

Nick had it right, the ref called full time before the added time had elapsed because it was the second instance of the Mexican supporters' homophobic chant/yell that they do on opposing team goal kicks. Their supporters have been warned about that particular chant for a few years now, and (I thought?) had actually mostly cut it out recently. In this case, they apparently just thought "the hell with it," because their team (which is in a real downswing at the moment) was playing like garbage, getting beat 3-0, there'd already been the multiple sending-off incidents, etc. This kind of atmosphere is not uncommon in CONCACAF -- Roger Bennett really put it best by calling CONCACAF "the Star Wars cantina of world football." National team matches down in places like El Salvador can take on a Thunderdome kind of vibe. Cops making riot-shield walls around opposing players taking corners as the crowd fling bags of piss at them. I kid you not.

The McKennie red card was given by VAR for a push to the neck. The little kid with the USA shirt and Mexican headband is almost poetic haha. Many Mexican Americans go for Mexico due to their heritage, culture, and family. Still, there could be a change for the new generation of Mexican Americans or just those that identify as Latino. We got players like Pepi and Zendejas who have parents of Latin American descent who can choose to represent those countries as well but chose the USA. This gives many kids and people who identify as Mexican American or Latino someone to look up to. As a Mexican American myself I have always gone for Mexico but growing up, I can see the connection I have with this American team knowing we fall under the same age. But there are a lot of people who are stuck in that dilemma of who to go for which isn't seen lightly because you're either not Mexican or American enough. I have seen a lot of people (grown adults) trashing this little kid but I think it's beautiful to see that he can choose who feels represented which I believe gives no one the right to dictate or judge what this kid decides to support. This is a plus for the USA but could be a disadvantage for Mexico if they don't get their stuff together. But that's the beauty in football.

@@qt14. football is still very much not a popular sport, particularly in certain regions of the states. Its only been within the last 5 to 10 years that it has really started to grow. I've been watching for 15 years and back when I started you couldn't find a single Spurs game on TV in America. A large chunk of their matches weren't shown on TV or streaming services until maybe 8 years ago. It has good live attendance and is definitely growing rapidly, but it isn't something the average American would be able to tell you too much about especially in comparison to American football.

To be honest, this is most US vs Mexico big matches. Everyone in concacaf is very physical with a lot more fighting allowed than in other regions so these rough matchups aren't rare. The mexican fans using homophobic chants is quite common which gets them into trouble, I wanna last last year all fans were suspended from attending from a stretch of Mexico games. And as every other comment says lots are like me with dual allegiances to US and Mexico.

I grew up supporting Mexican national team, and although i still wish the best for them, i grew extremely frustrated with the fan culture. I am proud of my heritage, and proud to be American. I support US team 1st, Mexico 2nd. I love my country because its given me everything I own and every opportunity, and i love my heritage for giving me so much history and culture. Anyway, just wanted to give you an insight on how many of us Americans have Mexican heritage. We make up about 12% of the total US population, and about 18% of the work force. Mexican Americans have the lowest unemployment rate than any other group of people in the states. We make up almost half of all the farmers, a third of all construction workers, cleaners/maintanance, and about a quarter of food prep and transport. In general, work ethic and family are essential to our core. I hope you enjoyed this info! Thanks for your videos, theyre great!

One of those meanings is a derogatory way to refer to gay people. The chant has been used for at least 20-30 years but has recently been banned by fifa.

Nah. It's a difficult job in general, but he made it MUCH tougher than it had to be. He let a lot go from the start then a clear point in the match where there was an obvious shift- Mexico knew they were outmatched, gave up playing football and began hacking- not even trying to look like they were going for the ball. Blatant shoulder to Gio's face- bloodied his nose. No call. Ref completely lost control of the match, kept his cards in his pocket until it was much too late. A good ref has a feel for the tone of the game and nips that sort of sh*t in the bud. Dude was in over his head- a very poor game on his part.

  • @xSolomonG

Hard disagree. He lost control of the match from almost the start. The highlights do not do his incompetence justice. He completely ignored a professional foul on Pulisic not even 3 mins into the game because... it was early? He didn't give a second yellow for a foul on Reyna that was clear as day and from then on it was open season. We need to start getting UEFA refs in for these matches. CONCACAF refs from these tiny countries regularly let things get out of hand.

As an Argentinian watching the game, it made me feel 2 things 1) Good for the Americans, they certainly have shown growth as a team and their investments in the sport have paid off, and both your matches in the World Cup and on the Nations League reflect this. 2) How far has the Mexican league fallen. I mean, Mexican TV often exaggerates their own capabilities to sell a narrative, because they have sometimes beaten top tier teams, and they certainly have some talented players, but they are not on par with teams like Croatia or the Netherlands or even England, who despite lacking World Cup Wins, do have consistent runs that could've landed them a victory and usually end in the top spots, while Mexico doesn't usually go past quarterfinals. A lot of Mexicans boast about their football achievements like the Copa Oro (Gold Cup) not necessarily to other CONCACAF teams, but rather, to CONMEBOL teams that haven't won a world cup or have had problems qualifying like Colombia, Chile and such. Most countries in South America are far more competitive than the average opponent that Mexico faces, with the only serious contenders being the USA, Canada, and an occasional good generation in countries like Jamaica, Panama, etc. Mexico has an easy time dealing with the local teams which often lack funding and/or players to stand up to Mexico. Meanwhile, most national teams in CONMEBOL have to play thinking they will have to deal with teams like Brazil and Argentina, which often makes countries step up their game, and many of these countries consistently send players to Europe to play for the best leagues, which makes the qualifiers harder than most would think, with Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and many others being far more dangerous teams than people give them credit for.

You should try to find more videos about this game because it was crazy. And the game was stopped 5 minutes early because Mexican fans were being anti pride I think. And mekinen and dest got reds so they couldn't play in the finals luckily we still won you should watch that games highlights

It’s not specifically “anti-pride”, whatever that means. The Mexican fans have had a “tradition” of sorts of shouting “pu*o” every time the opposing goal keeper takes a goal kick. It roughly translates to “fa**ot”. FIFA has tried for years to get the fans to stop that chant, but every time things are going poorly for them they bring it out. If they want to be serious about it they ought to award the other team a goal or just have Mexico forfeit the game entirely. Them saying “p*to” is not because the game was being played in June.

Millions of Mexican Americans are part of US. In addition, during Mexican-American War in late 1800s, both countries ended settling by US keeping and paying for territories of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada+ all formerly part of Mexico.

Try to find what caused the first set of red cards it was mental it wasn’t for inciting the crowd it was for like proper fighting and the original foul on Balogun was insane it was an absolute red and was totally meant to hurt him. A Mexican player also chokes Balogun and didn’t get sent off. The McKinne red I felt was super super harsh but I can understand from controlling the game kinda thing

Mexicans (at least when the game is in the states) have a tendency to get mad when they’re losing, usually against the USA, and they’ll yell out the F slur (homophobic slur) towards the end of the match when the keeper hits the ball. This happened a few times but most recently in the USA Mexico match you guys covered a few days ago. In the clip you watched they didn’t show it but the ref had to stop the match twice because of it.

I grew up playing in Texas, and going to a lot of Mexican league and pro soccer games. The chant used to be pretty common. Its always aimed at opposing GK. My understanding is it roughly translates to "effeminate/weak/ female dog depending on context.

I know Europeans don’t really get the Nations League thing, but us over here in North America LOVE IT. As you saw, it’s absolute bat shit crazy football because of the rivalry (i.e. hate) between our USMNT and Mexico which has been stirring since the early 90’s. I’d love to say it’s all in fun and sportsmanship, but it ain’t. 😂

@@kristi4113 “UEFA has a Nations League and it was a year before ours”. Nowhere there does it say “final”. It was in response to your comment about “Europeans not knowing about Nations League hype”. The UEFA Nations League started a year before the CONCACAF Nations League. They’ve had three completed competitions. We’ve had two completed competitions. I know it’s hard for you, but you are incorrect. In my opinion, you are have confused the Nations League with the CONCACAF Gold Cup. UEFA has their own “gold cup” as well. It’s called the Euro, and it is every four years in comparison to CONCACAF’s biannual competition however. Either way, I’m glad you are getting into Soccer and enjoying this great sport!

@@Pete_Finch y’all should support Lutontown. They have an incredible story. They were in the Premier league before it was the Premier league in the early 1990s, got relegated five times into non-league football, and over the last 10 years have worked their way all the way back up and just secured promotion into the Premier league for next season, behind American goalkeeper, Ethan Horvath, who kept the second most clean sheets in the entire championship last season. They are the first team in the history of the English football system to go from the top division all the way down to the fifth division and back up, and they did it in under 30 years.
