British Rail-Weymouth Tramway with class 33 Crompton, April 1993
A interesting railway vid now, a train running along the street! Back in 1993 Hertfordshire Railtours (i seem to recall) ran a tour down to Weymouth and then a couple of trips along the Weymouth Tramway to the Quay. The tramway leaves the main rail network just outside Weymouth Station passes by to the west of it and heads off along the roads of Weymouth to the quayside. It was used by boat trains years ago but fell into disuse. Although it runs along roads the trackbed is Network Rail land and there are Bye-laws in place re parking over the rails! After riding on the first trip i filmed the second one seen here in the pouring rain! The train is preceeded by two railway staff to warn people the train is coming. As you can see there is room for cars to pass alongside the train as it rolls along! If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!

Incredible footage. No idea why they discontinued such an unintrusive, seamlessly integrated service! 😉

Lol........!
My understanding is that although they have now covered the tracks they were covered with a rubber type coating before the surfaced so the line could be reinstated if needed. I can remember GWR pannier tanks taking the trains through the streets. Lovely video brought back great memories.

I'm pleased you like it. That's a very clever way to cover the track over, obviously not a railway idea then!
I was in a Weymouth a few months ago and walked the line. It must be the inner geek in me!

Admit it, you were scouting out the line to see how easy it would be to rob the metalwork with the rest of your scouse mates.

When I was a child on holiday in Weymouth the locomotives were steam. They had an old Pannier Tank loco with a cow catcher.

That must have been even more fun with a steam loco!
I remember in my 2010 visit to The U.K i walked along part of the old Weymouth Quay Branch up to the terminus. Even though Regular Boat Trains ceased in September 1987 they still kept it open for occasional specials especially when they had the 50th anniversary of The D-Day Landings in Normandy on June 6th 1994 but they closed the old branch around the turn of the 21st century i think. But despite the weather it was an interesting clip to watch.

It was cold as well as very wet but i still went to video it! The last shot was filmed in a park under a little shelter to keep the rain off the camera.
Excellent
4:24 Looking at the leading bogie, are those spoked wheels?? And again at 5:15, barely visible on the right hand side of the screen?

A clear example of a line laid and used at a time where few cars were on the road. Unsurprisingly it is no longer in use.
What a fantastic sight shame it will never happen again or will it? Thanks for sharing!!! 👍🙂

David, no it won't. The local council have removed the line by now. They got permission in 2021. It's now 2022 at the time of writing, so the tramway has been assigned to the history books or videos in this case.
I saw this on another video. Shame this doesn’t run anymore. I saw the BR staff having to move cars out of the trains path.

Yes, cars do park over the lines even though the railway put up plenty of notices that a train is going to be running.

@@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus we went from Aldershot to Woking by electric, but went on a small steam train to Basingstoke and caught the Weymouth Express, actually it was 1966, because there was a seamans strike which delayed our return. We had to attend school in Jersey for a week or two, until they decided to fly us back. We returned to Portsmouth airport, which had a grass runway, it no longer exists and is now an industrial estate. The extra cost of the flight cost us ten shillings each. So unfortunately our return to Aldershot was by coach, much less exciting.
I was somthing months old that time🇬🇧

Alll well my end. I have been out & about again recently with my vid cam to make new YT vids. The Weymouth line is still down and was mothballed for years. If it hasn't officially shut, Network Rail certainly want to do it so i doubt it will ever be used again.

Forgive me I’m not trying to cause an argument just wanted to clear the air. I wondered the same and it’s certainly something not covered in the rule book, maybe a local instruction in the sectional appendix, maybe not back then but in today’s world of where there’s a blame I’m sure if a user pressed the button on the crossing the train would have to stop, if they still ran ran that route.
Would be quicker to just get off at Weymouth station and walk to the boat
