    @@cheesecake7274 I'm a Korean student living in the US. I agree that the time to solve the problem is too short. In my opinion, it is to make a judgment among students. I think Korea has the highest competition rate for universities. In the US, good and famous universities, like Harvard Univ., are located in many other states. However, in Korea, most of them are in Seoul, which is the capital city of Korea. Many students think only the universities in Seoul have worthy of pride, and also many teachers and parents want students to attend there. However, there are a few universities but there are so many students who want to attend there. So, most of the students study really really hard to go to the universities in Seoul. 3:26

    The "less people" vs "fewer people" question (06:05) is fascinating. Even the headmaster got it wrong (lol). But is it really wrong? By the traditional rules of grammar, "fewer" is correct, but usage changes over time. In 2022, many, many native speakers actually say "less."

  • @athmaid

    @athmaid

    Жыл бұрын

    To most native speakers it probably doesn't really matter. In german it's similar, we use quite a lot of incorrect grammar in daily life. Most people will make an effort to correct this for important stuff like theses, but since you're so used to not caring about it it can be quite hard to spot and correct the errors. So be careful when learning other languages from native speakers. Imho it's better to learn it properly and "screw it up" later to fit in. I'm struggling with the correct placement of commas in multi-clause sentences for example, when texting we leave most of them out. But I don't think all those little mistakes I make become correct just because I use that form 90% of the time

    @@athmaid Commas can be tricky, especially because you see them used in so many different ways. I've been saddened by the seeming death of the "Oxford comma" in lists: used to be (and should be) "1, 2, and 3" but many now use "1, 2 and 3". To me, that means that 2 and 3 are grouped together. Like a menu listing "burgers, fish and chips, and chili". Multi-clauses are a whole nother can of worms. I usually go with "Main clause, sub clause, back to main clause, adendum clause." Like, place commas wherever you're inserting additional/optional information into an otherwise complete sentence. What complicates things more, and messes me up, is the usage of semicolons. My thinking is that they take two semi-complete sentences and mash them together into a single, more complete sentence.

    That's a thing I got to learn when taking an English course. My teacher would say that if we ever visit the UK, we would go mad from hearing so many mistakes XD But that applies to every language in my opinion. For us Portuguese, our language has a lot of rules that we often forget about

  • @kendobc

    This might show that Korea might have some of the same issues as Japan with English tests. I have proofread English tests for Japanese high schools before they are given to the students and the questions sometimes have more than one answer that could be correct. Some teachers don't understand the nuance and/or they are looking for the answer that was shown in the textbook. So even though 2 of the answers could be correct the teacher wants only the one they studied in the textbook. Its a poor way to do testing. So a student who might have lived in an English speaking country and speaks amazing English could have trouble with these tests because they understand the nuance and know that more than one answer COULD Be correct.

    I grew up in an Asian country with primarily people with english as their main language, but the tests were similar too. Ultimately this form of learning and testing is more to do with soft skills and is more applicable for non-native speakers, for example parsing through the text for the relevant info. If you interact with non-native speakers of any language you find that they do that unconsciously, picking out words from the entire fluent sentence and inferring the meaning which is more or less what these tests are testing.

  • @Lovarez

    @Lovarez

    Жыл бұрын

    I still think English taught in schools in (most?) non-english speaking countries is not aimed towards speaking specifically. That's also how I learned English in school. We're not learning English as a second language, we're learning English to pass tests (school exams, university entrance exam, TOEFL, IELTS, etc). So because of that many actually understand what people are saying in English, probably have very good writing and listening capability, they just can't speak it. That's probably why it feels different for the boys. They probably learned another language that's not English in school, but actually learning it as a second language. So the learning process is focused towards the spoken part of the language, because the goal is to be able to communicate using the language.

    @@Lovarez exactly, when I started learning english, I was taught on how to speak, rather when I got in college and then university, I didn't have that skill to write a report or use complex words, summarise or etc. I learnt all of that by myself asking for extra homework, rather just homework cuz most of the times we were not even given that. The only reason (from what I heard or read I think, don't really remember) that they are studying english isn't to travel any of that sort, but to actually get a job. I feel like Korean people are so smart. Those are skills that actually help people, instead of writing a whole as report and essay that you won't even remember because you are to stressed and focused on finishing it off. can confirm 9:03 as someone who moved to the UK in year 10 just having French as a first language basically secured getting A for even my french A-levels (which I did at the same time as my AS) not to mention GCSEs, and the teachers often used me as a sort of assisting teacher for my classmates. I could never dream of doing that in my home country, I would just get sent to a class whose level is as hard as the main language. In fact compared to switzerland, to not even mention the korea, the UK school system prior to university (then it depends which uni) is quite easy, its only redeeming feature is its slightly competitive nature so just barely passing is not enough.

  • @user-zz3ie8uu3o

    UK second language tests are quite easy. They actually make you learn the language from scratch at elementary level and you move up. Whereas they don’t do that in Korea. You’re not learning the language you’re just learning to answer questions for a test. So that’s why you see Koreans that can’t speak English at a native level but they’ll pass all those crazy tests.

    "Because the language and the way they write English is slightly different, and they use more complex words compared to us, so we found that hard." - Max I have a feeling that the Korean school used American English on their test, and what Max had said is true. There are huge differences between the two. I used to talk to a British dude before, and we sometimes misunderstood each other because we weren't aware of the differences between British and American English.

    It’s not only about American/British English. They are using mostly scientific article in the exam. It’s not daily like English words you found in newspaper, or spoken English.

    It's not about the usage of American English. If you read those passages, it's wordy and incoherent with a lot of run-on sentences. There is no flow as it's hard to follow. It's designed that way for students to learn grammatical patterns and key words. Realistically speaking, you would not see that kind of writing in a book or a newspaper.
