I remember reading a sports illustrated article on this movie. The writer was on a plane and this movie was playing. He saw another man crying and the man saw him crying. They both acknowledged it. It is one of those movies that gets a pass on the man tears. lol. We all see ourselves as underdogs in something in our lives. This movie touched on that feeling perfectly.

It's tears of JOY! I will say that Brian's Song, My DOG Skip , Saving Private Ryan movies get me all the time.
"Since 1975 no other Notre Dame player has been carried off the field...." That was true when this movie came out in 1993, but in 1995 the Notre Dame football team carried another player off the field - fullback Marc Edwards who ran for 82 yards and had 3 touchdowns in a game against USC. Marc Edwards went on to play for various teams in the NFL and was a member of the New England Patriots when they won the Super Bowl in 2002.

For someone who grew up in Indiana, this movie and Hoosiers are the two best sports movies. Part of this movie was filmed at my high school, which was a big deal since hardly anything is filmed there. Also, Hoosiers is a basketball movie, and basketball in Indiana is like football in Texas, or at least used to be.
@chogunrua
Ай бұрын
The holy trinity of Indiana sports movie is Rudy, Hoosiers, and Breaking Away imo. and Chelcie Ross was the "villain" in Hoosiers and Rudy which is cool
My nephew went to ND and was on the football team. Attending games there was always fun.
A great movie. The real Rudy appeared in a cameo behind Rudy's father in the stands. The guy with the white fur color. That was Vince Vaughn.
Tears me up every time the guys lay their jersey’s on the coaches desk. 😭
"The Vince Vaughn looking guy" 🤣🤣 you mean Vince Vaughn? Yeah, that's him. and the friend is Jon Favreau, who was in Friends, Iron Man, Couples Retreat, the Replacements, and directed the Lion King live action, bunch of MCU and Star Wars stuff... some big guys in here. And, Rudy is played by Sean Astin, who was in Lord of the Rings, 50 First Dates, and a ton of stuff as well.

Swingers …
One of the only movies that can make me cry!
I've seen Rudy 10-15 times, tears everytime.
It doesn't matter how many times I watch this movie, I still cry at the end!
In the 2010s my niece was and All-American basketball player at ND--they were number 2 nearly every year to Connecticut, who were unbeatable then. She loved playing there and attending school.
My favorite thing about this movie is that, you know the game at the end? My mom and dad were at that game. My dad was one semester away from completing his MBA (Master's in Business Administration) and my mom worked in the bookstore. My dad, may he rest in peace, was absolutely certain that the Rudy chant was complete fiction. (My mom had to leave 10 minutes early because the bookstore got swamped after games.) And so help me, to my mind the movie was over when Ned Beatty announced over the loudspeaker "MY SON'S GOING TO NOTRE DAME!" -- I feel like that would have made my dad's _life_ if any of his children went to Notre Dame like he did. Not that he had anything against Nassau Community College and SUNY-New Paltz...
like my father always said, "if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."

I had a friend in high school who was close to 7ft tall, who one day got sick of the "What's the weather like up there?" joke. He was asked, and responded by spitting on the offending classmate. "It's raining!" Glad you liked the movie. Notre Dame is in Indiana. Its considered one of the best football universities in America. I would LOVE to see y'all react to Brian's Song, one of the only movies men over 50 allow themselves to cry over.

The real Story is even better Rudy! Joined the Navy During Vietnam was a great boxer in his weight class, even in high school he was all conference Just undersized, he was a good wrestler Differences.. His best friend was killed in an oil refinery fire rather than a steel company. Charles Dutton's Character was a composite (three different people). Rudy's Brothers back him 100 % ( more drama for the film) Rudy did live in a maintenance closet. The New Coach Dan Devine really liked Rudy and wanted him to play ( he had said this in an interview) One guy gave up his spot for Rudy to play. Rudy was actually on the Cover of Sports Illustrated February 5th 1973 Under UCLA basketball players legs Bill Walton's legs as a fan sitting on the floor red an black stripped shirt is Rudy a Forest Gump Moment! Sean Astin's step-father, John Astin, is famous for playing Gomez Addams in the 1960s TV show, Addams Family. More interestingly - at least to me - he was a professor of arts, and head of the drama department at his alma mata, The Johns Hopkins University from 2001until he retired in 2021 at age 91!
I cam running when saw this posted. This isn't a football movie but some one never giving up on dreams and is one of the most uplifting sports movies.
My favorite three football movies: "Necessary Roughness" (1991), "Any Given Sunday" (1999), "The Replacements" (2000) [other than "Rudy", that is. ;-) ]

I have this on VHS tape, DVD, & it is now on my DVR. All time classic movie! I can watch it over and over again.
Samwise Gamgee with the sack. And yes, that was Vince Vaughn. And his tutor was John Favre.
If you haven't already, you ought to watch _"Friday Night Lights"_ (the movie). Another heart wrenching football movie and true story and probably my favorite
Great Football movies..."Incredible", "Brian's Song", "The Rocky Blier Story"....
Fun fact: I went to the same High School as Rudy in Joliet Illinois the same year this movie came out. I was the smallest guy on the team and was given the nickname Rudy.

I'll throw in a shout for reacting to We Are Marshall. Another "Based on a true story" college football movie that (based on the comments from those who were on this Notre Dame team) was a little more based in reality.
Wow, that guy REALLY looked like Vince Vaughn! hahaha
I’ve always loved this movie because I love football
Great edit guys 👍 I enjoyed that
Notre Dame has one of the most beautiful college campuses you will ever see. Also Rudy's older brother Mickey was our wrestling coach at my high school in the 80's (St Charles High School).
Joe Montana was on the quarterback of that Norte Dame team with Rudy.
Had the privilege of growing up in northern Indiana. I’ve visited the beautiful campus a number of times and have family and friends that actually studied there. Even though I haven’t been ‘home’ in many years, watching ND on Saturdays gives me a taste. It all makes this great film all the more special to me.
You guys do a great job! I love that you all are so willing to get involved w/American football! but like us and soccer we are really growing in that area all over US !!
Dan Devine is portrayed as an antagonist in the film, with permission from the real Coach Devine. In reality though it was actually Devine's idea to have Ruttiger dress in his final game as a senior.
You guys would love the movie called "The Rookie" it's about a high school teacher that also coaches high school baseball. Based on a true story.

One of my all time favorite movies. All the times I've watched this , this is the first time I'm realizing that was Vince Vaughn in the movie. Such a great movie. Nice to see you two enjoy it...even shed a little tear ..it'll do that to ya! 😉
The large building behind the endzone, outside of the football stadium is the University library. The exterior of the that building has a huge mosiac of Jesus Christ with his arms raised in the air and respectfully called "Touchdown Jesus".
When asked about the weather my reaction was "It's raining" & piss on their leg.
I love this movie! I cry at the end every time. I've been in those situations my whole life. I'm a small guy born with Cerebral Palsy. The disability effects my right arm and leg so I'm basically one handed and have a limp. I really didn't have anyone believe in me but I loved playing basketball anyway. I always had to fight my way onto the court to play wherever I was. What people found out was I might be short and slow but I was able to shoot 60% from the 3 point line shooting with one hand and jumping off my one good leg.
There is nothing like walking into Notre Dame Stadium for the first time. You feel just the history all around you.
On my Top 5 all time Movies list.. makes me cry like a baby everytime. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☑️
The Last Boyscout with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans! Ok, I know this only has football as a backdrop, but if Die Hard and Harry Potter movies can be considered Christmas movies, then why not. 😊 I think most of the other football movies have been previously mentioned, unless we go back to the very old ones, which I still like, or Disney's Gus (the field goal kicking mule). Had to reach deep for that last one, although I did enjoy it as a kid back in 1976. On a more serious note, I need to mention Bryan's Song and the Express.
That wasn't a Vince Vaughn lookalike, that is Vince Vaughn. This is before Vince was famous.
Theme song makes me want to run through a wall. Not Irish, born and raised Alabama fan. Lots of fiction in there but great story and film.
One of the greatest sports films of all time. And I can't believe you didn't recognize Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings.
I had the same reaction at the end. Truly inspiring 🍿 movie! Enjoyed your commentary on this and all of your reviews.
This is one of these movies where if I'm flipping TV channels and I happen to see this is on, I stop and watch it. No matter where it is in the story or how close to the end it is I have to watch it.
I saw this at the movie theater and had to walk out crying through the line for the second show. 🤭
Great all time Football story, movie and thats coming from a lifelong USC Trojan fan.
He said Vince Vaughn look-a-like… this was Vaughn’s first role + he met Jon Favreau who was writing SWINGERS, a cult fav film the two would star in after moving to Los Angeles.
I don't know if it's the best football movie ever but it's my favorite football movie ever, also good The Longest Yard (origional), The Express (true story of the first black man to win the heisman) is good, water boy is hillarious and dumb in a good way, Brian's Song is true and good but really sad
Hall of Famer and Norte Dame alumnist Joe Montana said the Rudy chant and players giving us jerseys wasn't true, but him getting in the game and getting that sack was actually true.
Speaking of respect, I respect what you two have been able to do with this channel. I was skeptical at first, but you've managed to build something special here that I couldn't have anticipated. Your appreciation for American sports and American sports culture comes across as heartfelt and genuine, and it's fun to watch it grow. Good luck going forward.

Way, way, WAY, too small for either of those positions. In high school I think he probably played DB, but the one coach at ND said he didn't want Rudy in his defensive backfield. So I'm thinking he was likely listed as a linebacker but was probably more akin to a nickel or dime back in a pass defense formation.
