From an assisting and passing standpoint, I think Jokic's only peers are Magic Johnson (who I think is #1) and Jason Kidd. John Stockton is up there, but the majority of his assists were just to Karl Malone in the pick-and-roll. The difference between Jokic compared to Magic and Kidd is that they weren't nearly the scoring and shooting threats that Jokic is, so it allows him to set up his teammates even better because defenses have to devote so much effort to keep Jokic from lighting them up from the 3, mid-range, and post. The only other player who I consider and equal passing as well as shooting threat is probably Steve Nash. Nash had that "black hole" magnetism as well because he could shoot from anywhere on the court.

Even if John Stockton got the majority of his assists to Karl Malone, 15,806 assists is a lot of assists. Other great passers were Steve Nash, Gary Payton, "Pistol" Pete Maravich, Isiah Thomas, Tony Parker, Muggsy Bogues, Tim Hardaway, Bob Cousy. Chris Paul and LeBron are also up there in carrer assists. Think they are currently #3 & #4 in all time assists. But yes, Magic Johnson made it look goooood. So definitely check out Magic's highlight video. He and Larry Bird were inspired by Pistol Pete.

Top assist players to look at: Magic Johnson: arguably the best passer ever (at least, so far), but missed a lot of games due to HIV John Stockton: current record holder for the most assists, by quite a lot. Not the flashiest but is the textbook point guard Jason Kidd: a notch below the other two but extremely spectacular Note that all three players specialized in assists and were unlikely to score as many points as Jokic (and didn't come close as rebounders).

As a fellow Brit who enjoys most North American sport(NFL,NBA,NHL and MLB anyway) Its great seeing other Brits get involved and wanting to learn about these sports, I chose the Denver Broncos as my NFL team in the late 80s(when I was about 4) as I loved the powder blue helmets and orange jerseys lol. But because of that I now follow all the Colorado Teams, Nuggets included. To get on to the topic of Joker there were stats popping up through out the play offs about where he ranked in terms of other "great" players. And one thing that was never taken into account was the number of games he played. The Nuggets only lost 5 games all post season....so they played 21 games and he was being compared to players who had played 25+. As with the stats in your video, people were saying that Jimmy Butler was only 3 points behind Joker so it wasn't that impressive.....But Jimmy played 1 more game than Nikola and still couldnt outscore him. Thats why I think his post season run this year is one of the best in NBA history and he really showed MVP level talent and I hope it washes off all the crap he got the last two years for winning it.

At 2:20 when he shows the assist numbers, #2 on that list is Jamal Murray, the point guard for the Denver Nuggets, it's basically him and Joker on the court for 40 minutes a game. Murray was also 4th in points. 7:18 you ask who is the best assister ever, toss a coin up between John Stockton and Magic Johnson. Personally I think Stock had a slight edge on Magic fundamentally but Magic had well, magic. Both are guys that are top tier fun players to watch. As far as stopping Jokic, no Idea, If the 30 greatest basketball minds and 500 best players can't figure it out, I got nothing. But I also live in Denver and would really like for this to keep rolling as well.

Simply put, Jokic is the best "decision maker" ever. People look at flashy play makers, but what separates Jokic is that he almost always makes the best play for th situation. It sounds simple, but paired with his ability it makes him one of the best players ever. I'll say it now, he's one of the best 5 players in NBA history, if you go by peaks. If he plays similar to this he has a very very legit shot at ending up on the Mount Rushmore. Simply put, there has never been a player who makes plays, shoots as well from deep, rebounds, and can score from everywhere on the court as well as he can. He is an absolute unicorn.

Very few players dominate the game with impunity without someone finding something that is effecting at neutralizing them. Jokic has great vision, great skill and most of all great intelligence and aptitude for the game of basketball. He'd be a great coach someday. Typically the point guard position runs the offense and gets the assists. You often hear point guard in basketball and quarterbacks in football get compared to each other for having that decision making role that distributes the ball to their open teammates. Most will say Magic Johnson is the greatest passer ever, and there are tons of point guards that are considered amazing passers, but every once in a while you get a rare player like LeBron or Jokic that can basically take over the point guard role and quarterbacks the offense from a different position. LeBron is the greatest small forward / power forward passer, and Jokic is the greatest Center passer. LeBron is #4 in all time assists so he’s right up there with the greatest point guards of all time. Jokic is still young in his career, but if he can keep this pace, he’s well on his way up there too. He’s certainly the most talented passer from the center position that I’ve ever seen, and I think that’s why the NBA is struggling so much to guard him. They’ve never seen this before. He’s so unique.

He's an incredible talent, but with comparing his scoring to other players, I do want to add the caveat that this season was ridiculous with how much more scoring there was in general. Scoring 40 or 50 points in a game used to be an incredible accomplishment, but this year it lost some of its luster. And with the increased scoring also comes increased assists. They used Shaq's 1999-2000 playoffs as a comparison. In the 99-00 season, the average points per game for a team was 97.5. This season it was 114.7.

Other honorable mentions are Jason Kidd and Chris Paul, possibly Steve Nash and LeBron as well. Staying home on all Nuggets players except Jokic, using a good and strong post defender, with a long athletic help defender on him (usually helping off Aaron Gordon) is probably the best way to defend Jokic, but even then it only works so well.

In terms of assisting at the Center position, Jokic can only be compared to Arvydas Sabonis, who was widely considered to be the best passing big man the league had seen. However Sabonis was not the player (or passer) Jokic is, more apt comparison would be point guards like Steve Nash, John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Mark Jackson, and Magic. In terms of assists there's a lot of different ways to find teammates and orchestrate the offense, Jokic behaves like a "floor general" point but those types of point guards historically don't tend to score as much as Jokic. In terms of being a 1-man offense where your teammates are an extension of your scoring, it's really Jokic, James, and Magic, and maybe Grant Hill that come to mind. Oscar Robinson as well but that was a very different game. Jokic's combined talents are singular. He's got the vision of Magic or James, the strength to make outlet passes like Kevin Love, the deftness to put the pass exactly where it needs to be like Chris Paul, and a little bit of sauce like White Chocolate. His kind has never been seen before.

Top assist guys I'd say are Magic, John Stockton, Oscar Roberton, Isiah Thomas, Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Chris Paul imo. Jokic probably the best Big Man passer of all time though. Some great flashy passers include Bob Cousy, Pistol Pete, Jason Williams, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Rojon Rondo, Manu Ginobli. Other great passing bigger guys include Lebron James, Joakim Noah, Arvydas Sabonas, Bill Walton, and Wilt Chamberlain, Lebron being a hybrid wing/big unicorn

Jokic is a cheat code, everyone was taking shots at his defense but not because it was bad, but only because his offense was so good people made that narrative, people Jokic guarded these playoffs had horrendous fg%, it's just unfair in a way. Also this is what you get when you build a home grown base team, Murray, Joker and MPJ all drafted by Denver, and then Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray has this insane chemistry with Jokic, it's like three of them are connected in some weird paranormal way where they always know what is the next thing each of them are gonna do before they do it. If you move Joker now to some other team, I don't think he'd be THIS good but this is what happens when you are patient and let the guys build themselves up together over the years. As someone who played pro sports, it is INCREDIBLY hard to beat a team that is gonna punish you for every little mistake you make and even harder when that other team almost never make mistakes, it's like a grinding machine, incredible.

Nobody has figured out a “solution” to Jokic. I think the best strategy I’ve seen is to guard him with a big, strong, athletic 4 who that’s they’re whole job and have the center soft doubling, lurking to block shots but also guarding the corner or dunker spot. The Lakers did this with Hachimura on Jokic and Anthony Davis roaming. They still got swept lol. If you hard double, he will pick you apart and if you don’t double at all, he dog walks you to the hoop. That’s why he’s the best player in the league. He has the most avenues to impacting the game and nobody has figured anything out to do with him. Most teams don’t even have the personnel to attempt what I think is the best idea with the big 4 guarding him.

Getting a lot of assists is different than just having that natural talent for passing, although obviously the most naturally talented passers will generally get a lot of assists. LeBron James is revered as one of the great passers in league history, but he only averages a little over 7 assists per game for his career. Now, that's still a lot of assists relatively speaking, it's the 24th highest career assist average all time, but the majority of people put LeBron as one of the 10, maybe one of the 5 greatest passers ever because of the many different types of passes he's able to make out of any kind of situation imaginable. Some players just have those gifts, and Nikola Jokic is one of those players.

One thing I want to mention is Jokics passing. Obv, its impressive but historically, Centers have been the worst passers on the court. In previous years, if a center got 4 or 5 assists they had a nice night. This is why Jokic is already considered the greatest passing big man ever. He's revolutonizing the position!

He definitely isn't the first great "big man" passer. Walton, Arvydas Sabonis, and Draymond Green have already had a headstart just to name a few. What makes Jokic better than these guys though is how he's the main hub for their offense whether it ends up an assist to a teammate or points for himself. The others mentioned are usually not the main scoring options despite being a primary or secondary playmaker

How to stop him? Better question is how to stop the Nuggets WITH him. I think the answer starts with length. The length the Nuggets also happen to have, with A-Aron Gordon and Micheal Porter Jr - both 6'10" or better and jumpy. Jokic passes OVER people. Denver has talent and is extremely well coached. Their scheme isn't new or special - their level of execution is, so to stop them one needs to scheme, get buy-in, and practice. A lot. Denver is also a very good defensive squad for the same reasons.

John Stockton is your guy for assists. He holds the all-time career assist record. No one - full stop - NO ONE will catch him. He also holds the career record for steals which is also a rather unreachable record. John Stockton was the THE ideal Point Guard. He’d get 20+ pts, 15 ast, and 5 stl a game. Some of the all time greats agree. He’s the best at playing Point Guard. Other greats at passing… Magic Johnson. The greatest show man the NBA has ever had on court. They didn’t make another Magic Johnson and they never will. Jason Williams. AKA “White Chocolate.” I don’t think I need to say more to peak your interest. As for stopping Jokic? You don’t play the game with getting points in mind. You have to full commit to a 2-3 zone or a 1-3-1 zone. The 1-3-1 I think would be the most likely solution. The other thing you need is the NBA’s 1st Team All Pro Defense line up to be able to run a 1-3-1 zone and commit fully to the idea of winning a game 84-83. Running zone in the NBA is for whatever reason not great because it takes 5 guys moving as one fluid cell of players. With one goal and one mind in defense. There is a lot of ego in those locker rooms. The Spurs of the 2000-2014 era did it well. On offense you have to not turn the ball over and run the shot clock down all the way before you take a shot each possession possible. Give the Joker less time to joke around on offense. You’d likely have to run a classic Princeton style pick n’ roll against the nuggets and just wait for the size mismatch to open up. In this idea there is quality to a missed shot if it’s taken with 5 seconds or less on the shot clock. You need to have the ball a lot more and make the other team feel like they have to play faster. If the other team presses and shots within 20-24 second range and misses and you get the ball back that’s nearly 45-15 out a minute of game play. You can do that all game if the offense is patient and makes the easy shots when the need to. Again, the Spurs of 2000-2014’s did it well. Which leads me to my bonus addition to the list if you made it this far. My favorite player of all time. Tim “The Big Fundamental” Duncan. This guy is the idea of a team player. Only player to record a a QUADRUPLE DOUBLE in the playoffs. A true blessing the basket ball and I’ll Donny Brook with anybody who think otherwise. The TLDR version is you can’t stop Jokic on the current Nuggs roster. He is the best center I’ve ever seen. He is Tim Duncan on 11.

I think when it comes to assisting I think it was ginobili. He was huge about that but he would also take a shots. To be fair I also think Nicola does well in our current game. Because there's a lot less actual big men. I would like to have seen him go up against Tim Duncan or Shaq. But everybody wants to shoot the ball and be the big score.
