You can't just leave out the mokka and call it mokkapalat, Dave! Coffee is essential to the taste. This is just a frosted chocolate cake 😁 There is so little caffeine in the finished product that it doesn't really matter if you give it to a kid. Personally I'd be more worried about all the sugar. Almost all Finnish kids grew up eating mokkapalat with coffee and we turned out just fine 🤎

I say we're just fine but what I mean is seriously addicted to coffee just like our parents before us

Right, that's not mokkapalat. Coffee flavor is essential for that recipe. I was drinking coffee as soon as i started speaking properly, I wanted me some "maitokaavia" with some sugar in it 🙂
@shauxuhrwilsongrim

It's basically only like two tablespoons of coffee in the frosting anyway :D And I've never heard of a version where the batter is made with coffee, only milk and juice (though I've always used milk).

I would love if you'd add a segment to the end where Cat could translate the whole recipe for you and you'd go through it so we can see your reactions to where you went wrong (and you'd learn the correct way in the process😁)

All of Finland being confused as to not giving mokkapalat with coffee to a child D
I really enjoy these Cadin Keittiö videos. Also, your pronunciation is getting really good these days!

Yeahhhh that's not mokkapalat anymore :D mokka=mocha implies that it has coffee in it. Also, the fact that it was made in a round cake tin, and it is that thick cake with thick icing, makes it into a chocolate cake in my opinion!

That mistake you made with the sieve. You were supposed to put that dry flour mix through the sieve into the original sugar/egg/butter mix while mixing, so it wouldn't make clumps. And simultaneously taking turns with adding the dry mix and also adding the milk. Not just combining dry stuff and milk together.
@shauxuhrwilsongrim
3 жыл бұрын
Also when he added the dry stuff in the milk and tried to mix it, he made it super lumpy. Resulting to him needing to use the mixer. When the recipe specifically said to avoid mixing it too much.. 😂

Aww! I was hoping for Cat's comments!
Yay, my favourite series! ☺️ It looked really tasty, and I mean, Leo's review says it all, haha! Love when you speak Finnish, it makes me happy to hear. You are getting better and better and even if you have a little bit of "an accent", it's only adorable. Great job!
I'm really impressed by how well you did and how well you understand Finnish. To your question about viewers rolling their eyes: I was definitely proud of you and excited that you were doing so well!
It's more of a cake than an actual mokkapala, but hey it still looks tasty.
Not even I could figure out the coffee and milk part.
I only now watched this and it was SO STRESSFUL. 😂 Mokkapalat without mokka, my oh my.
I've been noticing this over the years that I've been watching your videos, but never remembered to say it, so here it is - I really like the edits when you keep the visual part finish, but the next part of the commentary already rolls in. Yes, my explaining sucks, but I guess you know what I mean 😆 I dunno, it's just a really cool way to edit 👍🏻 And Cadin Keittiö is just such an amazing series.
Yay!
i keep thinking he’s saying “Karin keittiö”, like bro who’s this Kari you keep talking about
Good example of "out of the box" thinking, good job Dave 👏
Dave. Dave. Dave. Dave. Wtf? You can't f mokkapalat up like this 🤦🏻. Leaving the damn MOCCA out of mokkapalat. COME ON. You made chocolate cake. You made glazed brownies. You didn't make mokkapalat. 1,5/5
To be fair the shifting milk and coffee made no sense at all. Idk what recipe it is or if Cat just pulled off a prank on you 😂 that looks great, I think that was smart to put it in the cake tin and frost it coffee-free - however I would use just water, because the frosting may go bad more easy with milk. Coffee is in the end water based, it is just for taste (2 tablespoons) with the dusted sugar. I was more proud, especially with these weird instructions 😂
@Saareem

Yep, the instructions were needlessly complicated and unclear.
That Leo clip at the end 🥺❤️ More of Cadin Keittiö please!
I was worried when you mixed the flour to the milk but you saved it it an it turned out quite impressive!
Dear Dave, there is no such a thing as an "irregular shape" for mokkapalat 🤣
this is a really smart video format actually, love it
“I have decided not to follow the recipe” has never led to any disasters in my kitchen. 😂 Also, I appreciate you storing the baking tray in the oven! I always do that and it used to drive my partner insane. (He always popped the oven on without checking if it was empty 🤓 then he’d screech at me that the baking tray drawer is below the oven and I should use it. Nah! 😂)
I'm impressed how good you are guessing what those lines mean :3 You do well!
I liked this video. Reminds me of my own bakings. I get a lot more nervous though :D Or maybe it is the relaxing background music that removes the nervousness :D
Dave u did really well GJ! and Leo is getting damn good future since he can speak Finnish English and Swedish
Are mocha pieces no longer mocha pieces if no coffee is put in it?
Good job Dave! 😄👏
A video idea: Ask us for some of our favourite foods / snacks / beaverages, then try and rate them like a normal taste test vid. Love your vids, keep it up :)
Haha, this is so fun to watch. 😄 Good job, Dave. Even if it is not a real mokkapala. 😄👍
2 answerd and 2 tips for you from this video 😊 generally I'm impressed but sometimes it's a wtf eye roll. And 3.5 from me, looks like a 5 from Leo! 😂 Then the tips... I've seen on one of those coming shows that adding dry/powder etc to the wet helps prevent clumps. Also, if you Scrunch up the baking paper first then when you try to put it into a shaped tray etc then it will fit a lot easier without it trying to spring out. 👍
The most important thing with mokkapalat is to double everything on the icing part :)
You could make it with decaffe coffee next time. So such thing as Mokkapalat without Mocha! :D
Nice practical aproach Dave has got to the Finnish language. Most people think they can master Finnish in 6 months. It takes much longer usually. Atleast 20 years most often.
I remember when I once made mokkapalat and used baking soda in icing instead of vanilla sugar (by accident). Otherwise final product was tasty but icing was quite bitter.

You should get a Finnish dictionary to go with you on these kitchen adventures. Good effort though and it's fun to watch you decrypt Finnish and do cooking.
"hi you just caught me thinking about playstation access Robb intro" Hmm?
🤘🇫🇮 Nightwish army Finland First thing, whatever you cook in engilish or mandarin chinese. Get the all cookware and food ingredients on hand - Like Charlie Brown:"Good Grief"
It would help if you knew the basics of baking so you could even take a guess what the instructions are calling :D Would be cool if you make a second episode with Cad and do it "right". I think you would get some good laughs on the way!
I really need a reaction video to this :)
How about next time you make your own cheat sheet (using a given number of words/cheats or something) and then later, bake just using the Finnish receipt and your cheat sheet.
Oh my you did better than me! I always make the icing way too runny.
Masaliisaa!
You did pretty good i will give you 4/5 points keep up the good work❤

Kauniit nomparellit! viiskauttaviis.
Now I'm hungry.
Pausing and checking the recipe to see if I have all the ingredients at home😂
So u are not doing mokkapaloja :)
Kids adore this recipe.
I'm fine with the round cake-tin (might steal the idea), but lack of coffee is sacrilegious
I am not scoring you, but I'll let you know that I've made this round before myself, and like everyone else, never without coffee :) Still, a good job Dave.
Oh dear, not having coffee in mokkapalat is upsetting as finnish person, it's an essential ingredient in it! :o ^-^" But otherwise seemed turned out good, just weird seeing it in round shape!
Omg, this was hilarious :D
Can you someday bake something with Roni Back?
it was quite literally an absolute chaos till the very end, and some how a perfectly pretty and delicious looking cake came out of the oven, so it most definitely turned out great!
I baked "mokkapalat" yesterday and now i know i should do it:D lovely video😍
I am not being mean, but I can't help but to point out this: when you don't pronouce the h in "jäähtynyt" it becomes "jäätynyt" and that means "frozen" :D This seems like a wonderful way to make entertaining videos and learn finnish on the way! Good job!
Not much of a baker Dave, I guess... This finnish delicacy isn't actually cake, it's more like american brownie, a pie. Sort of. That is why using baking paper and oven plate! Nothing finnish cooking or baking isn't actually sophisticated, rather simple. Tho you could argue about that. Funny thing, in Satakunta, especially in Pori, Mokkapalat is called Masa-Liisa. (Masa --> Matti, Liisa = Liisa.) And nobody seems to know the etymology behind this. Maybe you could find out?
Looks delicious! 3.8/5, definitely would eat that whole thing in small slices: "Just one more.... One more... " 🎂😋
Masaliisakakku
So funny! 😂 But at the end looks good. And if your kid likes it, who cares about the baking process. 3/5
too thick :b normally twice as thin herkullisen näköinen kyllä!!
😅👍
You certainly have a unique way of making mokkapalat. Seems like the end result was delicious, nonetheless.
how have I missed this well I guess better late than never (also you made me want mokkapala...) Okay how did you struggle with most things I thought you would ace and ace most things I thought you would struggle? end product looks nice so I guess job well done... I think 3/5 is fair
Sorry, 0/5 in mokkapala scale. It's a completely different product without the coffee.

I say 5/5. It smelled like mokkapalat, it looked like mokkapalat and it, I assume, tasted like mokkapalat. And it wasn' t raw, Leo liked it a lot and you made something different and artistic. Well done !
It's not mokkapalat, it's masaliisa
I'm dying here 🤣
I would give you 4/5 because you skipped small things from the recipe but I guess it didn't affect that much the end result. And it looks delicious!
U can also put some pot (marihuanan🌱🌱) in the mix. 😂. But then, dont give pie to CaveLad.☝️
5 out of 5 for determination and I'm sure Mary Berry would have nice things to say. I won't tell Paul Hollywood.
The first thing you do when you start baking: you take every tool and all the ingredients in front of you on the table. I roll my eyes when you run around the kitchen in every episode 😂 Also, you surely lack some basic knowledge in baking skills and how the most common ingredients act together. But better late than never! 😊 3/5!
Mokkapalat ilman kahvia-?
I wanted to know what your wife thought about it. Yeah leaving coffee out is a crying shame. A SHAME. Shame on you.
how they became so good
That looks hella good. I don't see a problem with the shape. Based on looks at least 4,5/5. Taste rank you can ask your son (I bet it's high).
Looks good although it's not quite mokkapala when it is round like a cake😉😋
Mokkapalat! Nam nam!
Taste test surströmming eating?
I always make mokkapalas without coffee and still call it mokkapala :D It's much better without coffee.
