I'm German born. My American military husband brought me to America. I didn't speak English and didn't understand the words to this song. In time I taught myself to speak English. When I understood the words, I cried and cried. Never again will I just mumble the words. I understand what it cost to be free. To me the Anthem is the most beautiful song I ever heard. Thank you America for letting me live in this great country. I never disrespect the flag or the American laws. I put my hang over my heart bow my head and sing loudly with pride. God bless America and my homeland Germany. American people have always treated me kindly. I now live in the great State of Texas. So far I have seen 32 States and seen many wonderful things here. America is a great and wonderful country. I do get homesick quite often. Miss my family.

Francis Scott Key wrote this initially as a poem in 1814, after witnessing the events at Ft. McHenry during the War of 1812. It wasn't until 119 years later when Congress adopted it as our national anthem in 1931. Regardless of all the inconsistencies with this video, it is still an incredible story. My father served 30 years in the US Army & then another 18+ years in the civil service (aka Army Civilian Corps) as a journalist, radio & TV news anchor, photographer, editor, & broadcast station manager. Even though he is elderly & has mobility problems, he still insists on standing & saluting our flag every time the national anthem is played. I help to steady him, so he doesn't tip over while using one hand to hold onto his walker. 😊

Thank you for your commentary. People usually have something to say about the "social discontent" in America and it is certainly something to be heard. However, those who question the patriotism of Americans don't seem to realize that hundreds of millions of patriotic Americans are too busy working, loving and instilling the values of this countries values into their families lives. They always have, still do and will continue to do so in the future, defend America, even for those who live here but continually find fault.

There were several errors here. Firstly, this was Fort McHenry. Secondly, this was not the war for our freedom, this was the war of 1812 thus we were the United States of America not colonies as this suggests. There is some great creative license taken but the basic idea, really is there with this story Sorry, American history minor here so, I nerd 🤓 out sometimes. No disrespect meant 😊

You're right 1812. And I agree with everything you said. We owe so much to Britain. Giving us the ideas of representative government and the rule of law. Right after the revolutionary war John Adams was appointed ambassador to Great Britain and met with King George III and said this: “I think myself more fortunate than all my fellow citizens in having the distinguished honor to be the first to stand in your Majesty’s royal presence in a diplomatic character,” Adams continued. “And I shall esteem myself the happiest of men if I can be instrumental in recommending my country more and more to your Majesty’s royal benevolence, and of restoring an entire esteem, confidence and affection-or, in better words, the old good nature and the old good humor between people, who, though separated by an ocean, and under different governments, have the same language, a similar religion, and kindred blood.”

Thank you so much for your reverence and respect. With all the insanity of current geopolitics, especially the unwarranted aggression in Eastern Europe, we see freedom loving people willing to lay down their lives for the sake of liberty. I have tried to understand how so many people can brainwashed or "zombified" (using a popular term), as it were. Sadly, it's clear that many citizens of Russia are being deceived and led to the slaughter. They are blind to the reality of their hopeless situation. If only they would open their eyes, think and understand, perhaps they could save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Unfortunately, their eyes are opened, or more precisely, "closed", only by bombs and bullets. As a Texan in America I can relate to the brave patriots fighting for their freedom and sovereignty in Ukraine 🇺🇦 May God bless all freedom loving people!

You are correct, Europeans are annoyed by our patriotism. I think they’re even more annoyed that we don’t care. I think every time a European complains about the number of American flags there are, another one goes up. To be honest, and this will anger a lot of people but I don’t care, I think people from other countries, especially Europe, only focus on the flaws the United States has because they’re jealous. They see and focus on our flaws and ignore their own and talk down on Americans. And I think a lot of that has to do with so much we’ve achieved as a nation in such a short time while after thousands of years Europe is trying to catch up.

The last verse is not often sung and many don’t know of it’s existence. It answers the questions in verse one O, thus be it ever when freemen shall stand, Between their lov'd homes and the war's desolation; Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserv'd us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust" And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

While this isn't historically accurate, as an American I really appreciated you taking your hat off for us. That made me tear up.

I just want to thank you for taking off your hat and putting it over your heart. Thank you so much! I think there is a global thing where men should not shed tears in public however in the states this is one of the exceptions men playing in a football game or whatever will quite often shed tears during the National Anthem.

There’s a video here on KZread of a swimming match. As is customary, the singing of the National Anthem began but the sound system went out after the singer began. What happened next will make you thank God for this country and the good patriotic people who love her.

I absolutely agree with you. It is so sad that so many lost their lives to just have it wasted by the brainwashed and the braindead. It breaks my heart.

You should react to Lee Greenwood's original version of "God Bless The USA", I get emotional every time I hear it. It's , in my opinion, the most Patriotic song ever.

This was awesome, seeing someone from any other country get emotional over this story is touching...thank you, Mikey. You are correct that this was the war of 1812, nearly four decades after the USA declared independence from the UK in 1776. The battle at Ft. Henry took place in Sep 13/14th of 1815 it was part of the larger battle of Baltimore. Great video.

Thank you very much for this video. I deliberately watched this and other videos about our American anthem, to make sure my own country gets it's voice heard when there is a British coronation or huge event in Britain. My ancestors are English, and I usually feel like I'm watching my ancestors to some degree. So I make sure to honor my American heritage. Loved your video.

There are still a lot of Americans who understand the cost of freedom and cry and stand with their hand over their heart when we sing the anthem. Although I don’t agree with all of the political messiness right now the America I believe in allows the opinions of those I disagree with!! My family members fought for that freedom and so we must allow even dissenting opinions. And yes, Trump is a Reaganesque president. Thank you for your respect of our flag!! Thank your for understanding that as Americans we fight for our allies as if for our own. Also, it was the war of 1812. I’m so proud to be an American and your kindness is refreshing!!

This is a romantic Christian version. Any time I was coming off duty a little late (5pm) at my airbase, everyone was required to stop walking or stop their car if driving, if outside, turn and salute the base HQ where the National Anthem was blared over the loudspeaker.

As an American, I ashamed for not knowing that incredibly important story. I look at our national anthem in a new light now. Fittingly, a British brother gave me a new appreciation for the meaning of our flag. Even though brothers sometime fight each other, when they and their families are threatened, they always stand together.
