yo mate watch the Atlanta United vs Portland timbers MLS cup final must see the match

Those pens were an absolute, worst case scenario nightmare situation for the Union. John McCarthy was the Union's backup "penalty specialist" for 2 years after being brought in as a free agent. He wasn't getting any playing time in Philly because Andre Blake is considered one of the best keepers in the league. Crepeau also has that distinction but since LAFC had the leagues cup tournament this year. They knew they needed to give Crepeau a break here and there McCarthy was guaranteed minutes. Why this was a nightmare scenario for the Union is John McCarthy spent 2 years at the Union, practice after practice taking pens from Union players. No keeper in the league knew how they would take their shots better than John McCarthy. Apparently before they brought John into the game, the Union coach Jim Curtain joked about how bad it would be if John came in and it went to pens. That just had to be in the heads of every Union player on that pitch the moment it was decided the match would be decided via penalty kicks. Absolutely mental bad luck for the Union.

I’m from LA and watching this game from start to finish was nerve racking. I didn’t think we would pull out a win. Feel bad for Crepeau since he broke his leg and now is gonna miss the World Cup. Also the one thing the video doesn’t show is McCarthy (the Back up GK) ends up winning MVP

European fans, especially English and Spanish fans, tend to be harsh in their judgment of MLS. I understand why... You're used to watching the best, most expensive players in the world. Any other league is an abrupt downshift. What's important to keep in mind RE MLS is the progress the league has made in a very short time. As recently as ten or twelve years ago, it was nigh unwatchable. The quality of play was poor. The stadium atmosphere was poor. The broadcasts were amateurish. Today, it is a legitimate Premiership. It lags behind the Big Five, Holland, Portugal.... aaaaaannnd that's about it. I would say it's about on par with the Belgian Premiership. It's ahead of Mexico. Argentina's and Brazil's top flights have been in decline for a long time - even while the countries themselves produce the best players in the world. Events in Ukraine and Russia have decimated those leagues (both of which were, admittedly better than MLS). The new streaming deal is going to increase broadcast revenue several times over, which will in turn lift the salary cap. MLS clubs will be able to buy more players who might otherwise play for elite, pedigreed clubs in traditional high profile leagues. The other plus, to my mind, is the league's unpredictability from year to year. In the last fifteen years, there have been 13 MLS Cup champions. This year's champion didn't exist five years ago. This year was the first time in twenty years in which two top seeds advanced to the finals. It's simply more entertaining to watch a league in which the winner doesn't come from a predetermined small handful of clubs - even if the quality isn't quite as high (for now).

@@josephperales1848 A lot of people would agree with you - or even hold on to the past and continue to believe LigaMX is the superior league. Most notable of people who share that opinion, is Herc Gomez. But, the evidence of the last few years says otherwise. MLS clubs are, on average, far more valuable than LigaMX clubs. MLS clubs have a winning record against LigaMX in the past 2-3 seasons. MLS alumni are having far more success in elite European leagues than are former LigaMX players. The Mexican national team - top heavy with LigaMX players - have lost the past two international finals to the USMNT - a team with more players from MLS than from any other league. El Tri also managed only 1 point out of six possible against the Americans during WC qualifying. Finally, the LigaMX all stars have lost two years running to the MLS all stars. I admit, that last one is the least compelling data point. All star games aren't great indicators of overall quality. Nevertheless, it is true. To my mind, until I see concrete evidence to the contrary, it appears clear to me that MLS has overtaken LigaMX. There are simply too many check marks in MLS's favor for me to conclude otherwise.

@@kentgrady9226 yeah I'd agree with Joseph that MLS is more level or even still a bit behind Liga MX, who (despite Seattle's breakthrough) still dominate CCL competition. But it won't stay that way for much longer. I'd say MLS's quality varies rather wildly. The top teams could arguably compete with the top 6 in the English Championship (2nd division). The worst teams would struggle to survive League One. The Europeans talking sh*t probably have never actually watched an MLS match in their life, just fail clips sent to them on Twitter lol.

@@ericbrown1101 The lack of consequences to failure (e.g. relegation) means there's little incentive to compete at the bottom of the league. Franchises like Chicago can continue to exist as parasites on the league, bleeding broadcast revenues into the wallets of ownership who has little incentive to improve.

The problem with these highlights is the game had too many good moments. You really have to watch the entire game to understand the intensity of this match. It was so much fun to watch and I'm a neutral fan.

They usually do use a stretcher , but due to the severity of the injury they rushed the GK off the pitch and rushed him to the hospital for emergency surgery for a broken leg

MLS gains legitimacy every year. Seattle Sounders and Los Ángeles FC are the new standard.

I was there to see it, so many people were so excited to see Bales goal. He was hurt a lot during the season and unfit and didn’t do all that well when he was on the pitch but to see him get that goal was unbelievable.

Best MLS final EVER

MLS playoffs in general are very entertaining. Philly are becoming known for developing players, Brenden Aaronson is from their academy and his brother just signed for Frankfurt. Jack McGylnn, who unfortunately turned in the wall, is a 19 year old with a massive ceiling I think he'll be a player to watch. LAFC vs Philly was definitely an interesting battle of two distinct MLS identities.

Worth watching the entire match. It was honestly incredible

The MLS is getting better every year and is getting more respectable as time goes on. This year's MLS Cup was a joy to watch. I've been following the MLS for many years and I'm happy that the league has grown so much. Hopefully my club, Houston Dynamo FC, will start winning again.

Also a Dynamo fan. Was at the inaugural match, traveled for an Eastern Conference final in DC, and was a multi-year season ticket holder in the lower bowl. We are a dead org at this point. Poor fan support, no real investment in the team, poor marketing, and poor performance. It's sad.

The announcers who called that game, called the last game of the day each day of the World Cup, and every USMNT game. Love those guys!!! Also, we do have VAR and it is usually loads more accurate and efficient than EPL VAR

Good observations. Tie games in MLS used to be settled with a "shootout". FIFA made the MLS get rid of it.

9:55. I agree about the penalty shootouts. It was the one innovation early MLS introduced that I was on board with but it never caught on and MLS was struggling with fans of the sport who wanted authenticity and fir the league to fall more in line with the mainstream of the sport. That said more recently FIFA itself did consider experimenting with the concept. I think what stands against it is the fact that it's an American concept.

4:26 To explain the kits a bit, the colors are the original colors of the Philadelphia Eagles NFL franchise. If you look closely at the pattern on the shirts, there are lightning bolts that are a nod to Ben Franklin discovering that lightning was electricity. The main supporters group for the Union are called The Sons of Ben as in Ben Franklin. They were a very influential group in getting Philadelphia a team and also influencing the culture of the team and the academy. The team was founded in 2008 and played their first game in 2010. There was a lot of thought put into the team culture to try to get the city to buy into the team. Plus, LAFC basically ripped off the design for our home kits, so we couldn't wear those.

The colors were used by the Eagles, but that's not why the Union use them. They're the colors of the Philadelphia flag.

If the team actually played in Philly I could give it to you, but the flag really only represents the city, which they don't actually play in. But the Eagles represent all of southeastern Pennsylvania and even south Jersey.

Fun fact, actually sad fact, the LAFC keeper destroyed his leg, because of that challenge he will miss the WC because of the injury, his own will to put his WC future down the drain to get his team the win is pure club legacy.

Being an American from Northern California (San Jose fan) i love seeing other people from across the pond check out MLS. When i lived in Solihull over in the west midlands, i was literally the only one who wore my San Jose kit anywhere. Even when i went to play football over in Dudley.

you say "in the Premiere League, the keeper saves that", but yet every week we see bad goalkeeping and mistakes by goalkeepers in the EPL. It happens in any league in the world

I'm actually a huge fan of MLS. It's not the highest tier but it's super super entertaining. Storyline wise, lots of rivalries, drama, etc. It feels different than watching EPL but I find it super entertaining. If you do more MLS stuff I'm watching.

The substitute keeper is from Philly and played for the Union a few years ago. Since then, he's become known for saving pens.

The smoke was from fireworks, The match was of one the most entertaining matches, I have seen in a while. The highlights didn't do it justice. The MLS is actually becoming a good and lively spectacle. As an American, I proud that my country has won over 1000 Olympic gold medals and over 403 Noble prizes. We invented electricity and the airplane, split the atom, and landed on the moon. One of these days, we ( I mean us guys) are gonna figure how to kick that damned ball , because everybody knows the American women are good at kicking balls (I should have said soocerballs )

The guy that scored two of Philly’s goals was Jack Elliot. English CB, was in Fulham’s academy but chose to go to school and play in the US at West Virginia University. Been with Philly since 2017. Other guys to follow for the Union are Kai Wagner and Paxton Aaronson. Paxton is Brendan’s kid brother and I think he’s moving to Eintracht Frankfurt pretty soon, and I believe Kai started his career there. German LB, probably the best defender in MLS, arguably the most in-form German LB right now and some on Twitter have even said he should be on the plane to Qatar.

I grew up in the UK watching EPL. MLS still lacks in quality but has improved over the last ten years for sure. At this rate, MLS can be bigger than MLB and NBA. MLS highlights are weird. The editor needs to learn from European leagues highlights. I watched the entire game at the stadium. As a LAFC fan, I was so confident that we were gonna take the cup. Philly Union put up a great fight and this game was full of drama. The black smoke you see is the LAFC’s official supporters’ 3252 put smoke grenades for Dragonball Gozeta screen to show how powered up LAFC was for this game.

I was actually at the game in the standing section. The highlights really don't do it justice. It was one of the most intense things I have ever done. I thought we were gonna lose. I was ready to waive the white flag. One of the league's best keepers gone with a broken league and with that down a man. But the last 15 minutes happened. Tactically and technicality wise, yeah. MLS is a mess. But it's a lovely mess and I as an American take ownership of it.

For a league that didn't exist 30 years ago in a country with zero football/soccer culture to have still achieved what MLS has achieved is incredible. TV numbers are still surprisingly low but gameday atmosphere and attendance has continued to explode. Even bad teams like Cincinnati consistently sell out (Cincy was better this year though).

I enjoyed this reaction and can see you know your football. I’m a MLS fan and Premier League fan. I’m from NY, so I’m a fan of New York City FC, which is the little sister of Man City so I support Man City too. I know, sorry for that since you’re a Man U supporter and I think your accent sounds like you’re from Manchester or somewhere north. Anyway, NYCFC won the MLS cup last year and it was just announced yesterday that they are getting a new state of the art stadium so I’m excited about that. NYCFC lost in the semifinals to Philadelphia. I’d agree that their away kit is horrible. Their home kit is too bad.

I think it is a lot more skill dependent than taking a penalty. I think for a penalty shootout it's good but not for in game penalties. Penalty shootout just seem to be luck based but maybe that's just from years of pain of supporting England and us losing in tournaments on penalties 🤣

It’s karma as soon as he said he hates the kit union scored a late equalizer. At least now they are good British guy

I'm with you on penalties being a terrible way to end a game, though I'm not sure I would recommend going back to the old MLS style penalties either haha I always say extra time should be golden goal with ten minute periods, and after each period each team removes a player. With each player that comes off the game will open up more and so scoring will be easier so the game is bound to end in a reasonable time, and it's more fair than penalties because it's actually a continuation of the game and not a weird specific skill contest

The highlights video doesn't do the match intensity justice. It was one of those where you had to know all the details leading up to the final and watch the whole 90 minutes plus extra time and penalties

I swear Philadelphia in the 2nd half were way more dominant and kept locking up Vela, I was so scared cus our defense was on the verge of fucking up like how they did on the red card moment.

I played goalie and I'm absolutely livid about that 110th minute flub. And more furious that it led to the keeper breaking his leg.

We do have VAR. I personally like it. Yes, it slows the game down a bit, but I'd rather get the calls correct.

You should watch the video about the rivalry between Seattle and Portland! I’m not a fan of either team, but would say it’s the best rivalry in MLS, and among the best across all sports.

I'm a Philly girl. I don't like the lemon & sky blue kit either (reminds me too much of NFL Chargers team - so colors not associated with a Philly team). Our original kit (look it up) looked great (Navy with Gold). I honestly haven't looked into why they changed it. If I knew maybe I'd understand but it doesn't mean I have to like the new look 😂🤪.

i don't hate the philly kits, but LAFC definitely has the best kits in the league. the art deco design is just *chef's kiss*

About the second goal Philadelphia scored, you mention that a Premier League goalie would of shaved. I’ve been watching English football since the 80’s before it was called the Premier League. I’ve watched goals that could of been saved, that MLS keeper would saved. Being a keeper is about being in right position and reaction. Game was intense but realistically nobody wantes to watch lots of missed opportunities plus people don’t have the longest attention span so can’t make the highlights too long

A. "Vela" is just pronounced "veh-lah". You don't have to do that with L in Spanish unless it's a double-L, like in "tortilla (tor-tee-yah)". B. As an LA native and graduate of the University of California (school colors: blue and gold), I thought those Philly strips looked tight and boded well for the LA support.

For any Europeans wondering what MLS is don't worry most Americans don't know what it is either.

7min stoppage time in regulation was two concussion protocol procedures. By American standards, this was a *very* physical game. MLS isn't as rough as EPL. But this game was a 'final'', right? Yeah, the keeper in the PKs was a substitute. Crepeau was given a red because "denial of a goal scoring opportunity", even though he was injured. Kid who replaced him was actually a product of Philadelphia's academy! (Yes, we have them now in the US. The game is maturing over here) Breaks my heart for Creapau, he was on the Canadian National team, and was going to play in the WC. I hate it for him - I'm from Atlanta (not Atalanta) and our best centerback was headed there too, before his achilles sheared. Still mystified at how it happened, he's in his 20s. Thanks for checking in on MLS, though. Football over here stunk for *so* long. Only reason we have a first division now is because all the rich businessmen wanted to host the WC in '94. FIFA: You can't have the World Cup. You don't even have a league!" American Businessment: "OK, we'll just start one." We're getting better at real football. MLS isn't the pile of retirees it was in the 1990s. Christian Pulisic's doing good work at Chelsea, isn't he?

I love the "we have them now" as if the Union academy is some new thing and hasn't been around for over a decade. BTW, McCarthy IS a Philly kid, but not an academy product. He played college soccer locally, went on to the USL, then signed by the Union in 2015

I agree with so much that you said. The goal from Philly did totally look offside to me and my son. We also agree that the philly kit is awful and we like LAFC's kit. The goalkeeper was sent off with a red card, and if you hadn't heard, he had a broken leg as well. I'm glad LAFC won, but I hate it ending in penalty kicks. I wish we could be set up more like the english system, but for some reason, they think having the "superbowl" is what everyone wants. Oh well, it was definitely an entertaining game to watch.

Well I saw the keeper get a yellow card previously and then it just skipped to him getting a red card with no replay or showing of VAR, these highlights were very scuffed 🤣

Don't get the wrong idea, the MLS isn't always this ugly. It was a fun game to watch because of the drama but the level of play is on average better than this.
