British Guy Drives Tail Of The Dragon For The First Time - In a KIA Stinger! (USA Trip 2018)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

300+ corners in 11 miles. That's the Tail of the Dragon, a legendary piece of road nestled in a picturesque part of the United States, straddling the border between Tennessee and North Carolina.
Some of the local Lotus guys invited me to join them and so I did - driving the twistiest, narrowest road I have ever seen in a two tonne KIA!

    Just did the dragon in my Stinger GT2 today.... It was the perfect day, partial overcast, 50 degrees out, and dry. There was almost no one there and I pretty much had it to myself. I went full throttle to the point that I destroyed my brakes and did not run into any traffic for the entire 11 miles.

    Deals Gap is my cathedral ! But there are loads of other brilliant roads in that region as well. The Dragon can get a bit too crowded during prime time but night runs and going mid week helps

    I drove the Dragon in a 2003 Ford Escort 18 years ago Ninjas almost ran me off the road.... LOL. There are some roads in northern and central AR. that match the Dragon in every way for twists and turns for several miles.....

    Love the Dragon, have done it on my 12GS and HP2 and plan on heading down this summer to do it on the Triumph Rocket Roadster. That should be an experience.

    I rode the Tail in my Kawasaki Concours 14 a few years ago during the week - if you do it on a weekend it is just too jammed with cars. Many other beautiful roads in that area. Blue Ridge Highway is a long and very scenic road that goes through the Smoky Mountains.

    Got a gts v6 .I'm a hard guy to impress when it comes to cars but this is a great gt car also have a 09 holden vxr8 bathurst edition 6.2 with the walkinshaw performance pack bit of an animal. You should come up for a visit. Just north of Whitby in North Yorkshire got some great roads.

    I want to do the "Tail" but it is way too crowded with slow vehicles including Harley riders who don't know how to ride twisties and if you get a wet day it's ruined.

    It’s funny how everyone says that wouldn’t buy the Kia because it’s 50k for a Kia. Most people can’t even afford the payments on it, that’s why they’re not buying the car. They can’t even afford it lol.

    Jay, the photographer you passed was Killboy, be owns the place across the street from Deal's Gap. www.killboy.com You can buy high quality pics from his site, just go to the date and click onto the section cars. These pics can be blown up to a large size without losing the look. I've been going down there every year since 2003 and have driven a 2000 Contour SVT (Mondeo ST200),2005 Crossfire 6 spd, 2007 R56 MINI Cooper S 6 spd, 2010 Honda Fit sport (auto), 2011 CRZ 6 spd and my 2013 Abarth, I know, one of your favorite cars but on the Dragon it's my favorite car to date! I know you didn't have the time to do the other roads you heard about, Moonshiner which is right next to Deals Gap and the Cherahola Skyway which 129 runs right into. When you come back PLEASE hit these roads. When you take The Dragon left where you pulled out right out of Deals Gap and go down a bit you'll see a Dam and it's called "The Fugative" dam and that's because they filmed a part of the movie "The Fugative" right there. The scene where Harrison Ford is confronted by Tommy Lee Jones. Also the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" was filmed right in Deals Gap but it was a service station at the time. Can't wait till you come back, I've been going every mgb year since 2003 and it's about a 10 hr drive, WELL WORTH IT EVERY TIME!

    @@JayEmmOnCars Just a thought... thinking of a roadtrip in May... from Tail of the Dragon, to California for the West Coast Lotus Meet in May 2019. Possibly doing Route 66 with major stops like Cadillac Ranch, Giant muffler guy, Rock Cafe, Meteor thing, Grand Canyon, etc. California could include Carmel, Monterey, Highway 1 and Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Yosemite, Redwoods, etc.

    @@JayEmmOnCars First of all, thank you for taking the time to answer my comment. You posted the video quite a while ago and it is nice to see that you still read the comments on it. I really appreciate it! And now that you explained the logistics of your trip, it does make sense that you would be talking to them as an audience. But I thought this was about how the Stinger handled the twisty stuff and so was a bit disappointed. By the way, I have bought a Stinger GT two weeks ago. It is the facelifted and updated version for next year. It will be a bit of a wait for it to get delivered, but I know it will be worth it. 😉

    Negotiate price with dealers. Email them and ask them to send you quotes for the best offer they'r willing to do (MSRP minus dealer discount). A lot of them will offer up to 4-5k off MSRP if you search long enough. Combine that with Kia incenties and you can get a GT2 for significantly less than $50k.

  • @RyanDeClue

    @RyanDeClue

    leecm Not significant enough. This is an unproven vehicle at this point, which doesn’t rival the price for performance of the used market. As I said, I absolutely love this car, but it’s not good enough to justify the price. Not even at 10k off.

  • @leecm

    @leecm

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@RyanDeClue I guess that is fair. Kia is still building their brand and is working on overcoming the stigma that is 'kia' in America. This is similar to what Honda and Toyota had to do when they hit the market decades ago. With that said, you'd be hard pressed to find a three year old used vehicle that will have the features and performance (not to mention looks and warranty) that a brand new Kia Stinger GT2 has for $43k (what I paid). I have confidence in this vehicle, but to your point, you never know until a few years after owning the vehicle.

  • @RyanDeClue

    @RyanDeClue

    leecm very well said, and exactly my point. However, from an enthusiast point of view, people are having serious problems trying to make big power numbers. This doesn’t bode well for the used market. If, however, the car handles the power people are making reliably over a long term, that’s a horse of a different color. Reliable power is always better than occasional big power.
