British Food Section At Jungle Jim's in Cincinnati

Recently we took a short trip to Cincinnati to check out the British food section at Jungle Jim's International Store. For my money, this is the best offline place in the Midwest to get all your British favourites. Enjoy!

Here in 🇬🇧, tea is the go-to in a crisis. Coffee is...OK but doesn't really cut it for calming things down. I admire your honesty but there was a collective gasp of shock at your admission. American life is getting to you. You'll be going to the Other Side...

@@stephenphillip5656 Coffee = amp things up Tea = calm things down? I only drink tea when I don't want much caffeine, but I can see how it's more of a cultural habitual thing seen as the thing to do to calm things down. That said, if I'm looking to drink something to calm down, it's more likely to be a good Scotch instead of tea!

I LOVE Jungle Jim's! Trouble is, I always buy $200 of stuff I don't need there. I love that you showed the "porta-potties". My son was fooled by those the first time we visited! They look like one-person stalls from the outside, and he just saw someone go in, so he refused to even try to open the door. The look on his face when two different people came out was priceless! ;)

One of the biggest surprises is the prices are not actually that bad, and comparable to local grocery chains. *This isn't a whole foods.* The things that are more pricey is the imported items or premium items. But, again you'd pay that extra anywhere, often more. Like, I often stock up on coffee flavor syrups. For slightly more than a 12oz bottle at Walmart, I can get 24oz glass bottles there. The biggest drain on the wallet is there simply being too many good things in a concentrated space.

You are right. To a certain extent anyway, it must be coffee or tea. I have written here before about marrying into a British family. (I am a Californian.) My wife's parents and extended family all came here. Most of them could slug down pots and pots of coffee all day. Then go upstairs to bed. No caffein problem. They seemed immune. They enjoyed a proper cup of tea on special occasions. Both their coffee and tea were good. I enjoyed the way Mum made them. By the way, I had several experiences with ordering coffee in New Jersey restaurants. On the subject of how we like certain drinks, this is. I like my coffee with milk and sweetener. In a NJ restaurant order your coddee with the words, COFFEE REGULAR. They will bring it to you all ready fixed up. They always got it right. Very enjoyable.

If I had discovered you then, I too would have popped over. I love Jungle Jim's; my family and I love to come by every few monrhs and spend the day (and lots of money!) there; it's a foodie's paradise! Did you get a chance to check out the meat section?? Buffalo, rabbit, venison, and (the one I want to try first) alligator! The people who work there are friendly and really helpful, and once when I asked someone about a foreign fruit (I think it was from Vietnam), he cut it open and gave me a slice so I could see exactly what it tasted like! Great place; if you come back, let us know and maybe we can say hello!

We had a small shop called Best of Britain, the owner has since retired but I threw a William Wedding Tea and bought most of my items there. It was excellent and my friends were impressed.

Here in Calgary, we have foods from other countries but they tend to be in different ethnic stores. Ribena was easy to find. With Vimto, in a Scottish/Irish shoppe, they were sold in cans; in a shoppe selling Middle Eastern foods, they were in bottles.

When I was a boy, I remember that we always had either Hartley's or Chiver's marmalade for our bread and English muffins. British marmalade is made with Seville oranges and is not as sweet as American marmalade which is made from Valencia oranges. Unfortunately, it is much more expensive than years ago(we are retired).

Laurence, you lost yourself for a moment and went full-on Brit! You called the shopping cart a trolley! Your eyes were bugging out of British chocolates and I thought you might cry at the site of real biscuits! Very cute. BTW I live sort of close to Jungle Jim's. I pass the one at Williamsburg, Oh on the way to my son's. In a Cincinnati suburb.

In Cincinnati, I worked with a consultant who lived in Indianapolis. She mentioned that she was really into different types of honey 🍯, so I recommended she go to Jungle Jim's International Market. The next week, she said that she was so overwhelmed 😀😃🤯 with their selection that she was going to have to go back again to look more closely and think about which others to buy. 😂😂

I am just finding your channel. I love British humor and Irish humor. I can't understand the Scot's when they talk so I don't know about their humor. My friends Mum came over to the states as a nanny in the 60's. I think she came to look for an American husband, really. She found one, actually three. When I got into a car accident she came to visit me, she allows told me I was house proud( I got the meaning). That day she brought me a gift, a tea cozy. She didn't tell me what it was right away, I thought it was a hat. I didn't drink tea or have a teapot. But now that she is gone, I treasure that tea cozy. I wish we had coffee pot cozy's, here in the US. Hey if you need an idea for a side project you could make tea cozy's and sell them on Etsy. Just a thought. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

American here. I'm late to the party on this video, but this store looks fascinating. The closest thing we have to this in Michigan is a World Market, which makes me happy, since my discovery of the Mars bar. They're much better than a Milky Way, in my opinion!
