British Army recon vehicles travelling in columns during NATO Exercise Steadfast Defender 🪖

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Armoured reconnaissance vehicles known as Jackals and Coyotes, with the British Army, travel by road and on the backs of transporters. The high mobility transporters had been participating in major NATO Exercise Steadfast Defender. Other army trucks and support vehicles are also featured. Most are from the 7th Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team, aka 'The Desert Rats', operating as the NATO Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF).
The type serve as Reconnaissance Vehicles for the British Army. They are high mobility vehicles designed for quick manoeuvring both on and off road, with a variety of different terrain. They're armoured underneath to protect against IEDs and can be used for patrol & protection duties. The four wheeled Jackals are supported by six wheeled Coyote Tactical Support Vehicles (TSV) to transport cargo over the same type of terrain.
They're both made by Supacat and Babcock in Devon & Dorset in the UK. They're manufactured as the High Mobility Transporter (HMT) 4x4 (Jackal) and 6x6 (Coyote). There are plans to upgrade the current Jackal 2 to the Jackal 3.
Exercise Steadfast Defender is the largest NATO exercise to be held since the Cold War. Over 90,000 troops are participating with over 1,200 combat vehicles, over 80 aircraft and over 50 naval assets from all 32 allies, including Sweden. British Forces vehicles travelled by ship from the Marchwood Sea Mounting Centre in the Port of Southampton.

Jackals and Coyotes seem to be very operative and versatile vehicles. But they have no roof ... I suppose that their crews enjoyed the rain very much. 🌧🌧🌧😂😂😂

When I served our recce vehicles were Saladins and Ferrets, not high tech I know, but they did keep you reasonably dry and protected you from small arms fire 😊

You'd think some sort of canopy or clip on roof could be developed if they're keeping these vehicles for possible operations in Europe. Some of them seem to have a basha trying to give shelter.

Apparently the MoD is getting rid of them in a few years, so they probably don't want to develop any extras for equipment they're planning on divesting from.

@2:29 I could be wrong but is someone vaping in one of the Jackals upfront!? I didn't think you could vape whilst on patrol/ driving in the Army.....or in the Army full stop! Cool video though, don't envy those guys in the rain without the roofs!

Gotta love the British mindset Jr Engineer: oye, shouldn’t we add a roof or something? Sr Engineer: a roof, for what?! Jr: well, what if it rains? Sr: if it rains? Nah mate, these are for the British military, they ain’t going to be using it in England where it rains Jr: it rains in other places too Sr: not as much as in England. Jr:… Sr:… Jr: right so no roof, then? Sr: don’t need it, it ain’t gonna be used in England British troops: 🌧️ 😢

Ahh yes panic buying long term vehicles for short term use, only suitable for hot climates, whoever decided it was a good idea to buy completely open vehicles seemed to forget that apart from Afghanistan most of the time the British army and its activities is mainly carried out in the northern hemisphere where a good summer lasts just 6 weeks, if we're lucky. Ah well it's good for morale, after all there are far too many recruits anyway.

Bloody awful seeing those poor buggers having to drive those things in the rain and the pitiful attempts to keep it off with a tarp. Might have been OK in Aghan but Europe? We should be able to do better than this for them.
