British Airways plane hits Heathrow runway in aborted landing during Storm Corrie | SWNS

This is the hair-raising moment a British Airways plane’s tail hit the runway at London Heathrow airport during an aborted landing.
The plane flew into London Heathrow shortly after midday on Monday (31/01), after taking off from Aberdeen at around 10:50am.
The moment was captured by Jerry Dyer, the founder, presenter and producer of Big Jet TV, a live streaming platform specialising in Live Aviation content.

    Going to be open and honest, feeling very emotional watching that. It easily could have been a disaster with lots of lives lost. Just a wee nick of the tail or wings on the runway could produced a big fire. So glad everything went ok and pilot aborted and came down safely afterwards. I was once landing at Edinburgh in a storm, and it took three attempts at landing (seemed to be just a couple of feet from the ground each time we tried) before we got down. I am glad I never saw the footage.

    Seems like you re not really into planes, otherwise you would take this one a bit more relaxed. Of course this one was close to a tailstrike, but even if there would have been an impact, the main problem would have been the costs to repair the plane and not, that it was close to a tragedy. There were many more dangerous landings, which even damaged planes fuselages and nobody was hurt.

  • @marcsantana7

    @marcsantana7

    2 жыл бұрын

    Happens all the time tail-strikes included. Biggest scare there would be stalling on the go around due to the high angle of attack+ all the drag then it’s another story. But they maintained a good positive rate of climb before retracting gear and flaps which is what you do on such situations.

    After the right wheel touched and he lifted, then both main gear planted solidly on the runway and if the spoilers had been armed as per the checklist, the spoilers would have deployed on the top side of the wing shutting down all lift. However, we don't see the spoilers deploy. My guess, they may not have been armed or may not have functioned properly.

    You can hear the engines spooling up before he touched down. Big planes like that have so much inertia that they will continue to descend and potentially touch down even after a go around was initiated. Also, even if they hadn't called go around until they touched, if the pilots feel that they do not have proper control of the aircraft to roll down the runway, they can still go around after touching down, provided the reversers haven't been deployed

    Send that pilot back to the Sim. That was awful and unacceptable. He didn't save anything. He's lucky he did stall it and kill everyone. Yank him out of that cockpit immediately until he gets way more training.

    @@cheesegraham2387 That's his airline's responsibility That aircraft should've gone around long before it touched the ground. Otherwise, you fly it onto the runway like you mean it and forget about passenger comfort.

    Totally agree. That guy nearly got a bunch of people killed. The aircraft was coming down just fine on the first attempt.

    At 0:26 you can see the spoilers starting to deploy after both wheels are on the ground. (This is normal landing procedure, the spoilers deploy automatically when both wheels are on the ground) However at 0:27, the spoilers retracted. This tells me that the pilot just made the decision to go around at this very moment which is quite late for a go-around. They also try to lift the plane off the runway way too early. It takes a few second for the engine to spooled up from idle position (the engine would have to be in idle position for the spoilers to deploy) This looks like a late-decision to go around which probably causes the pilots to panic a little bit The pilots are probably going to need some re-training in the sim after this flight before they can let them fly again…
