British Accents: LIVERPOOL/SCOUSE!! An introduction ☺️🇬🇧 || British English 🇬🇧
Hi lovely people!!
I am so so excited to show you today’s video! An introduction to the Liverpool/Liverpudlian/Scouse accent. This will be the start of many videos about all the different British accents that can be found across the U.K! So keep your eyes open for that!
This will hopefully shed some light on why you find it difficult to understand natives, and why you struggle to understand series and films. There is a lot of diversity in accents coming from the U.K and it’s important to have an understanding of all of them in order to complete your studies and research when learning English.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy my attempts at doing the accent - i had a lot of fun!! ☺️
I hope you enjoy my video :-)
Let me know in the comments what you think?
Thanks for watching 😚😚

Hi Katharine, I m from Switzerland but I m living in Chester and work in North Wales. I ve got colleagues from Liverpool and Birkenhead. People from Birkenhead have got the same accent but there are called plastic Scouse because there are not the true ones haha!
Hi kate! Ma Belle, my Fridays'moonlight, my ears' delight, my woodlands' fairy, my pansie, my violet, my Rose of England, 🌹😊 Wow, I am truly amazed, Katherine. This is brilliant! I wasn't expecting you to go into this field of accents, but then again, should I be surprised? I know you're a musician, and your musical ear must certainly help you in the reproduction and 'imitation' of these accents. It was basically Sabrah in very first instance, herself of Liverpudlian origin and very talented when it comes to accents, who had - I was going to say familiarized me, but that would probably be too strong a word - at least happily introduced and initiated me to the Scouse accent with a few videos in which she also wonderfully presented the characteristics - both force and phonetic - of this accent which I like very much, apart from the fact that it was, as you recalled it, that of the Fab Four! As far as vocabulary is concerned, I particularly remember some very characteristic words and expressions, of which scran, bevvy and wool/wollyback were indeed part, such as: You're boss / Have (get) a cob on / Go to the offie / chocker / clobber / trabs / a jarg /la'; lad; fella / a bird; judy / geggin' in / a meff / It's baltic / I'm devvoed / the ozzy / you know 'warra' mean ... to name but a few ;-) As a Frenchman, of course, I'm far from familiar with the accent, nor with the countless other ones in the UK, and I think I'd be quickly lost (as is the case with some of the videos I've watched where they speak with a Liverpool accent), as my ear is of course only familiar with, broadly speaking, RP and modern RP that I learnt. But it's always interesting and useful to get even a small idea of them and possibly and hopefully know how to identify them. I adore your version! It seems to me that you reproduce it perfectly, with those very particular, lilting intonations and inflections that I would have been able to identify immediately had I not known that the lesson was on the subject. I also really appreciated the very interesting cultural context and historical reminder, as well as the lightness, freshness and enthusiasm and, above all, the delightful and so charming touches of humor with which you have treated the subject. A big, big Bravo, you're sensational and I can only hope that in the future you'll also cover other English accents such as Cockney, Brummy etc. or why not Scottish, Welsh and Irish accents which I also love, and/but of which I have only a very limited knowledge, that would be so great! Please get all my encouragement! A thousand thanks yous, Merci beaucoup Katherine! 🙏🙏👏👏👏 I wish you the loveliest of weekends, Love 😘🌹❤❤🎸🎹☮💌🕊

I just can’t believe your Scouse accent. It was really good. Some of the parts you say sound like the Boston accent, especially when you say ‘cah pahk’. So that is where they got it. And I thought they got from the Irish. You must be reading my mind again because I do have character in my novel who lives in Liverpool, but she is Scottish. Anyway, it is in the publisher’s hand. I love the Beatles too. But I also love the Moody Blues and ELP. I love ELP’s rendition of ‘Jerusalem’, it is so much better than the typical English church choir.

@@englishwithkatharine Judging visually, you must likely never grew up with these songs unless you listened to an oldies radio station. If you have a chance, listen to the Moody Blues' 'Days of the Future Past' LP or CD. And if you can, listen to 'The Best of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (ELP)' LP or CD. That was truly great progressive music by the English in the late 1960s to the 1970s. Oh, what a 'Lucky Man' I was growing up in that era.
You have s magnetic personality Miss Katharine. I'm always mesmerized whenever i see your videos.

Hello Katharine!! 😀 I’ve really loved this video!! 🥰🥰 When you learn a language it’s important to know the different accents to better understand the speakers of that language, so I’m looking forward to seeing the new videos on British English accents!! 💂 By the way, the two most difficult accents of Spanish, at least for me as a native, are that of Cádiz (Andalusia, Spain 🇪🇸💃🏻) and that of Chile 🇨🇱 😁😁😁 Best regards from Spain! 🇪🇸❤️🇬🇧

Excellent video! Quite entertaining and informative. Some weeks ago watched a video from the Liverpool TV station, people in a shopping district were asked for their reactions to Klopp resigning as team manager. I hardly understood anything they said.

Hi there, this accent actually reminds me of a Welsh PE teacher I once met in Madrid and another Welsh guy I once met in London. What reminds me of them is not exactly the sounds and general pronunciation but the speech intonation. Thanks very much for this and all your other videos.

Hey there Katharine! What a kind content! My first film in English was Restless Natives and the action taken in Edinburgh Scotland. On 7:58 of your video I hear exactly the same sound like in the movie. So in my point of view those accents ( Liverpool and Scottish) much more closer than RP. Because they are Northumbrians :) Many thanks! Tararabit
