    we started to get issued these in 1994/5. The camo print came in about 4 different prints and shades from very green to very khaki. The kit was given out randomly so you got a khaki jacket with green trousers or vice versa , on parade it looked almost like a 3rd world army that the RSM LOVED !!!

    I retired in 1998 after 25 years. Always wore the same stuff I was issued with when I joined. All these other introductions blissfully passed me by….😂

    I got issued one of these (well I got it when I took some kit for exchange ) I actually thought it was a half decent jacket compared to the previous pattern. Only really wore it in camp,wore my windproof on exercise or tour. Even after the 95 pattern stuff came out i still wore that jacket as it ironed well and didn't end up with that lumpy looking texture some of the 95 pattern jackets seemed to get. As daft as it sounds I just liked the way I could wear my clasp knife on its lanyard and have it looped through the epaulette and in my top pocket.

    My father was issued one in 1996 and used it until the introduction of MTP, very well made kit according to him. Made the Bosnian Winter bearable combined with his buffalo jacket. I own 2, one of which has been modified with the Canadian buttons. I wonder how common such a modification was.

    All my DPM (except Dutch) is '95. I used to think "Canadian buttons" were something adopted from the Brits as we also used the same boot tread pattern (MKIII combat boots). I now know we earned the term "Canadian buttons" honestly. I love DPM for the Britishness; it is close to US Woodland but I find Woodland to be over used in North America (ie. pink and blue woodland) and just to '80s but DPM is vintage now but still classy.

    I only ever used these in camp for guard mount, highly pressed,highly starched, sewn in creases, after guard mount (if you didn't get stickman) they would be swapped out for one of my Para smocks to actually go on guard.....

    A massive improvement on the 84 Pattern. Wore mine whilst in camp and opted for privately purchased windproof smock or (yes) a smock parachutist when on Ex or on Op tours. Like the fact that a hood was optional (IIRC).

    I got one of these when I had to exchange my wonderful original dpm smock. Still got it a good bit of kit.

    The zips were always the first thing to die on those smocks. Other than that they were very comfortable to wear.

  • @neilcastell6951
    @neilcastell6951 Жыл бұрын

    The zips were prone to damage, due to squaddies being clumsy when ironing them. I only used mine on garrison duties ... in the field i used a para smock or a tailored 'falklands' parka. Some of the early ones were very orange or yellow tinted, most of these were recalled and destroyed as they were a melt hazard, and there were some very nasty incidents of the fabric melting and sticking to the wearers skin.

    I'd love to see a comparison between the Gulf War desert uniform and the later "tea bag" uniform, it's hard to find information online

    Got one of these thru Silverman's sometime in the mid 90s; at first i thought it was a para smock because of only having a zip front but then saw buttons and cuffs-- didn't know what it was, (some kind of hybrid ?) until now. It was in the yellow color as others have mentioned; got a boonie hat that matched the color, too.

    As much as i LOVE British dpm there are so many variants of it out there i cant seem to be able to tell which is which....for example i cant tell the difference between the 84,94 and 95 patterns.....and thats just the actuall british made examples...i believe new zealand used it but was that a locally produced licienced made variation or genuine british made example?

    Being RM the windproof jacket was always on issue or you kept one when issued and never gave it back. The newer DPM jackets from 95 ended up with the latest issue (now) is virtually a windproof jacket. Light and airy and able to wear in layers this was the key. The first DPM out was multi layered and was useless when wet and took ages to dry out. I had a windproof in 1980 why did it take another couple of wars for the dimmies to make it general issue.;

    These were an improvement on the 84 patt,apart from the ones in that godawful orange colour.made them look like cheap knockoffs.

    There were at least two different color variations of the green European theater items, a gold-based variant and the greener one like you show.

    I purchased 3 smocks a few years ago. 2 of them are labeled COMBAT SMOCK, and around the collar, there is what appears to be button holes. Would you know what Era those might be? Also in the same lot was a pair of trousers with only 1 thigh pocket. My 3rd smock is made out of some type of rip stop material. I'm so confused. But I am in America, so please excuse my ignorance. Please help.

    The ripstop version is combat /soldier 95 kit, the ones with the button holes sound like combat smock ecw (extreme cold weather) the button holes are for detachable hoods....

    Is '94 pattern a collectorism? Or is that actually when it was introduced? Also, something to note is that there appears to be some sort of transitional pattern which have the cut of '94 pattern, but with leftover '84 pattern fabric and buttons. There was an example of transitional trousers at Hack Green if you saw them. Maybe trials garments?

    This pattern does appear to have been around from around 92 according to popular opinion. As a result it sometimes also carries the collectorism of 90 pattern.

    I always thought anything on the shoulder made carrying 58 pattern and Bergen's really uncomfortable, epaulettes on shirt, woolly pulley, and jackets just lumps of materials and buttons digging into shoulders. Another example of kit designed in an office.
