Britain's "Unkillable" Soldier, Adrian Carton de Wiart

Lt.-Gen. Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart served as a British officer in the Boer War, the First World War, and the Second World War, survived two plane crashes, was shot in the head, face, stomach, ankle, leg, hip, and ear, tunneled out of a prisoner-of-war camp, broke his back, and bit off his own fingers when a doctor refused to amputate.

Common traits among men like de Wiart include things like stubbornness, determination, honor, duty, the feeling of responsibility mixed with a little audacity and boldness. Reading their exploits we sometime wonder if a touch of madness is part of their personality too. Some heroes are driven by a humanitarian need to save their wounded comrades. Others see that something has to be done to save his fellow soldiers, so he decides to act and manages to succeed.

Trust a Belgian person, to out British(stiff upper lip) the rest of the British, and be awarded the hardest medal to win in the British army(possibly the world), on his way to do more on his own, than three or four people would normally do between them, and this surely makes him a legend in his own lifetime........ And, I would say that his life was at least as amazing(if not more), as Winston Churchill’s life was, because they were both active(albeit in different ways) in the same three wars, and except for the wounds and medals, they both went through the same sort of ordeals, with being captured and escaping etc........ I would love to be able to sit at the table for an epic lunch with those two, and some others too, because when the port and brandy started to flow, you can guarantee that the stories would be totally amazing, and I am sure that they would carry on through the day and night, at least until breakfast time or even luncheon.........

Very interesting day today..prior to viewing this I read of a 12 year old who served in the US Navy till he was seriously wounded, and his true age discovered..I than came upon this hero...Sadly I am sure there were many who were like him that we have never heard about, their actions dying with them...Even more sadly there are few like them today...A old Lt. I worked for once had said.."I am afraid the days of iron men in wooden ships has passed"...To those who's fame and bravery we have never heard of..Rest in peace my friends..you earned it...

Chiang Kai-Shek yes technically held the rank of general, but its just a weird way to introduce him considering he was the Chinese president, It's like if you were to Introduce Winston Churchill as the Minister of Defense or Roosevelt as the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. It has the effect of presenting the Idea that Chang Kai-Shek was just some general representing Chinese Nationalist Interests to the Allies as opposed to the leader of the Chinese Republic.

  • @noahkillough2840

Also interesting that Adrian criticized Mao for "holding back" against the Japanese, when in reality Nationalist generals had to literally force Chiang Kai Shek at gunpoint to put his domestic war with the Communists aside to fight the Japanese.

Especially considering by the time the British entered the war against Japan, Chinese Communists had already spent four years fighting the Japanese.

Well i'm reading his memories right now and i went through that moment, he said that after the battle his fingers were still onhis hand only with a couple of flesh of his hand, because the doctor didn't want to operate, it was literally useless, he bit it off, and he didn't felt anything.
