This will save an absolute fortune. Given the cost of interceptor ballistics it is a great tool. A defence system to complement something like the iron dome would take away the economic attrition from defence rendering traditional ballistic attacks useless. I can imagine pairing this with AI and power systems to make a rapid fire array that will revolutionise defence. This could spell the end for traditional attacks in the future. Rogue states with large ballistic capabilities and drones could be almost laughable. A very effective defensive capability that is unlikely to cause any harm whatsoever. This is fantastic news. As a Brit it is a boost to see us leading in this area after successive governments have failed to invest in defence for so long now.

For anyone that retorted that the foil to this weapon is a mirror, I hate to break it to you, but high power lasers can punch through mirrors. No mirror reflects 100% of all light, it'll be in the high 99th percentile typically, but with a laser that has enough power, you can use the minimal percentage that doesn't get reflected to burn through whatever reflective material is used, be it aluminium, etc. Do you really think that they'd R&D something like this only to fall at such an obvious hurdle? So no, we aren't seeing actual 'glitter bombs' as a countermeasure to this, ever.

@@StevenKeery Keep drinking the 'cool-aid'. Facts - this Dragonfire laser is pathetically under-powered. It has almost no chance of shooting down a single drone - let alone 50 drones all launched at the same time. At its present power rating - it would have to lock onto the drone & keep up the energy burst for a minute or longer. This is based on actual US Navy tests of their system called 'Helios' that fired a laser with 3X (150 KW) the power & even then it took 15 seconds to burn a hole in the thin skin of a very slow moving drone. The range of these laser systems - is also a joke - under one mile. This is due to two major problems - Atmospheric scattering & Thermal Booming. Look it up. And then there is the trouble such systems presently have with dealing with multiple targets at the same time. 50 drones will travel that 1 mile istance in a matter of seconds. Russia's Lancet drone - travels at 300 KPH. It will cover that one mile in under 20 seconds. No where enough time to even singe the drone. Basic physics says your fancy system is screwed.. Result - Russian shovels will wipe out every one of these Laser weapons. But hey - you keep believing in the BS propaganda.

And UK can't even launch Tridents from submarines. The percentage spent by Britain on defence has dropped rather than risen over recent years, from 2.14% in 2014 to an estimated 2.07% in 2023. The results can be seen, even with warships which always have problems. Luckily it has... lasers! 🙃

140 million to 10 pounds but need a fleet sized ship to have the energy to fire it well if it costs just 10 pounds then surely any elec meter in uk can fire this, logic deficit overload

Sometime these reports make me wonder what sort of Narcotic these lot are smoking. People watching this video should look at the size of a £1 coin and check the distance more than a mile and imagine locating and shooting a moving £1 coin at a realistic speed with whatever tech available... I call BS.

These lasers will only get better ane become hugely valuable in the evolving threat of hypersonic nuclear missiles. If you were to attatch this laser to AI whicu can think anticipate enemy movements actions 10 seconds faster than a human, very real problem for the enemy to deal with.
