Good luck in expecting the UK general public to fight wars to defend the country! In past wars we knew what we were fighting for in terms of preservation of our way of life, culture, democracy and against an evil regime. Now our own leaders are an evil regime, democracy is dead when they ignore manifesto promises, change leader and give important roles like foreign secretary to unelected individuals. Why would the working class volunteer to defend this country when they are treated badly in peacetime. I'm pretty sure the Ukrainians wanted peace up until they got invaded. In fact, when the US warned them Russia was serious about invading, Zelensky blew us off as "alarmists." When I was in the Army, Saudi Arabia told us Iraq wasn't serious about invading Kuwait. America didn't "understand" Arab culture - it was just bluster. If you don't prepare for war, your logic seems to be there won't be one. SURPRISE! The enemy gets a vote too!!!

That’s not the issue. The issue is that the UK is bound by NATO Article 5 to go to war with Russia as soon as Russia invades Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania (which is what Putin wants to do). It’s only a matter of time before Putin threatens to invade the 3 Baltic states unless they leave NATO and declare neutrality.

This is just out rageous. I have heard it all now. Ex serviceman for 15 ..17 years here. from 1979, times have changed, but I just can not see us lasting out any war at all today.

The US backed two coups in Ukraine - 2004 & 2014; it backed ethno-fascist groups who carried out 1/4 of the holocaust in WWII; it backed these fascist groups through Project Aerodynamic and Project Icon from 1940s till 1990. This is exposed in a FOIA (Freedom of lnformatlon request) release of 3,800 CIA documents. Then according to Ast Sec Victoria Nuland declared publically at the National Press Club, the US spent over $5 billion on regime change in Ukraine from 1990 to early 2014... That includes the two coups and more backing for fascist groups.

By the time your country is invaded, it's too late. Europe has had this fantasy that having a large military is and in of itself "provocative." You know why the US Arms industry is booming? Because everybody is anti-war until they feel threatened. Then they can't place their orders with the military industrial complex of the United States fast enough! Right now, we are not able to meet world demand for our weapons and still maintain proper levels of our own arsenal!!

I'm a bit conflicted with this tbh as a left-leaning, socialist brit. I'd rather not have a bankrupted / under supplied military with a hostile Russia at the gate, but I also despair at the total dereliction of duty on home affairs. I think this points more toward systematic misappropriation of funds, going back a long time - the rich keep squeezing the poor one way or another.

Putin is putting it on the table. He has surged the Russian defence budget and multiple intelligence sources from many countries say the Russians are making plans for a large scale war. All the information is out there. Who are the vulnerable you want to look after? You can always take a coule of them into your own home if you feel so strongly about them.

The British have been conned to go to war twice. Hopefully the indigenous British person wont fall for it a third time. At least our parliament both times was full of British people.

As an 80 yr old who saw his Father return from WWII i will say right away that the fighting age Brits of today could not and will not fight for this now ruined Country. They haven't the love the strength or the wherewithal to fight for something that means very little to them. My Fathers generation joined up in their hundreds of thousands to fight because their Fathers had fought in WWI and they loved this Country, but the young of today haven't had to fight for anything and quite frankly they haven't the passion needed to fight.

Britain, especially centred on Westminster, is a spectacularly arrogant small player in the world. We continually scale down our armed forces when our enemies are growing theirs. We treat allies like France with scorn. We step back from institutions like the EU for flawed, petty reasons and what are we getting for our small-mindedness? a revolving door of power-hungry Tories and a shrinking economy. We need to start acting right or we’re in major trouble within a decade

Well you see Peter Britain is no longer a superpower and has tied itself with the US in the "special relationship", having no independent foreign policy of its own. The call for a "citizen army", which is scaremongering as what they really want to do is increase the defence budget to 4% gradually from the 2% it is now. This coincides with Turkey allowing Sweden to become a member of NATO; coincidence....ofcourse not, the US has pressured both the Tukish government and us into doing this. The news anchor's are in cahoots, not arguing with the individual they are talking to but agreeing with them; it's all a set-up so the public keep their mouths shut when taxes go up.

In Britain we have no manufacturing of propellants. As an island we buy it from elsewhere and ship it in. Ministers were made aware of this a few year back and ignored the fact. Not a good position to be in.

The fact that the steel production in Wales is shutting down is also extremely worrying. Imagine having to rely 100% on Chinese and Indian steel for all our production, potentially in a time of war! Certainly hostile with the former and India becoming increasingly more pro-Russian. Great forward (Brexit) planning. What was it Rees-Mogg bragged about: "a global Britain venturing out into the world". All the while the world is becoming more insular, more protectionist and more volatile.
