Britain has a Terrifying Future if We Don't Break the Left's Education Stranglehold

There can be no victory in the culture wars if we do not first win the battle for young minds. We have the most radically left-wing youth in history and they are not becoming more moderate as they get older. Across a vast spectrum of political, social and cultural issues, today's youth hold views that are completely out of kilter with the rest of society.
Addressing the New Culture Forum's 2024 conference, NCF Senior Fellow Rafe Heydel-Mankoo explains how there is no hope for restoring a more healthy (left/centre/right) balance amongst our youth without first dismantling the left's stranglehold over education.

Excellent speech here; I advise anyone with the ability to do so to consider schooling at home; textbooks can be found cheaply either online or if only a few years 'old'; and best of all history books from 80+ years ago can be found second-hand inexpensively and are tremendously valuable even for a child in mainstream schooling.

I’ve just retired from teaching primary after 33 years; one of my final straws was being subjected a whole day of “diversity” training, lead by an “inspirational” leader who was biracial, lesbian and partially hearing…a real box ticker. Diversity was almost exclusively about gender identity … little about race, even less about disabilities. I desperately needed advice about how to cater for the needs of 16 different native languages and autistic spectrum disorders as well as global delay … all of which were relevant to my class at the time. I was silenced by the peer pressure of some 250 other teachers from my multi academy trust, all of whom nodded like donkeys in agreement with this “leader” as I sat there desperate to call out “this is not my business, this is not for primary children”. If parents were to subject their children to some of the ideology I was expected to support and indoctrinate there’d be a good case for child abuse! My dedication has been taken for granted … I’ve taught the national curriculum, seen all of the fashionable ideas come and go and come back round again … but never have I felt so manipulated, and expected to be manipulating. I long for the days when I was able to listen to the children read and answer their questions, follow their interests and actually teach them, not indoctrinate. I’m done with teaching now … it’s obscene.

It’s no wonder we now have a mob of moronic and ignorant activists who are bereft of sanity and morally bankrupt. Thanks to Rafe for his courage and much needed correction to the falsehoods with which these so-called social justice warriors have become infected. It is imperative that we heed the warning that I recently heard: We need to make sure that our moral impulses are correctly informed. They were not easily moved, They were icy -- willing to wait Till every count should be proved, Ere the Saxon began to hate. Their voices were even and low. Their eyes were level and straight. There was neither sign nor show When the Saxon began to hate. It was not preached to the crowd. It was not taught by the state. No man spoke it aloud When the Saxon began to hate. It was not suddently bred. It will not swiftly abate. Through the chilled years ahead, When Time shall count from the date That the Saxon began to hate.

I'm 42. When I was at school, teachers were a source of knowledge, discipline and righteous fear. They weren't my friends. I didn't particularly like them but I learned from them without political bias. Life teaches you what you need to know and it moulds you, naturally. You form your own opinions by digging a little beneath the surface of a subject that piques your interest. It shouldn't be prompted prematurely by an adult who has had that opportunity to evolve their opinions naturally over the course of their life. Figuring out who you are and what you stand for is a privilege we should all have in this country. It's a crime to rob a child of that.

They truly believe you must agree with them, or you must be an intolerant, violently far right thinker. I am 72 and now realise that debate with those under 40 is not often possible. Many have learnt their mantras thoroughly and are incapable of change. That is another modern oddity. It has traditionally been the older generation that has been considered set in their beliefs, but it seems I am actually far more capable of change than younger people, if something is brought to my attention to bring that about.

Just why is politics in primary school anyway? Is there no inspection these days into what is being taught? The job of school is to teach specific subjects - Maths, English, Geography, History Art and surely there should be inspections to ensure teachers are not imposing their dangerous political views on young minds. Children will grow up and adopt their own political views.

That wonderful portrait of Winston Churchill was made by Yousuf Karsh. The photographer had asked Churchill to ditch his trademark cigar, but refused. So Karsh simply walked over from behind the camera and yanked it out of his mouth. The great man glared in annoyance and Karsh got just what he was after. Apparently the two became great friends afterwards.

Problem is too many children go to university following courses which make them unemployable so they depend on the bank and accommodation of mum and dad. Parents are also to blame. I have a friend who does a manual job but has his own company. Two of his sons have followed him into the building trade, not his company, but both are under the age of 30 and own their own homes. There needs to be a shift in higher education with more technical colleges.

I have read the book you mentioned and in every one of the contributions I see nothing that is only what we wish to retain, value, and cherish. 👍👏👏👏👏👏bless you.

What about afterschool “English Culture” clubs whereby English kids can be sent to learn about their roots and how to resist settler colonialism? The blacks had something similar in the 90s to teach “black history” before they could influence the school curriculum. Various coloniser groups also have these clubs with which they keep their culture alive.

Your comments about Drakes Drum and the lack of English history taught in schools today struck a real note with me. I am originally from Plymouth born in the 50's. As a child I used to be regularly taken to Drakes' house, Buckland Abbey and have seen his drum many times. At school we were taught the song 'Drakes Drum' as well as smugglers songs! My mother died when I was six and is buried in the church yard where she worshipped, at St Budeaux Parish church where Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh were both married. We used to live across the road! In a prefab built by the German Pow. Plymouth being almost obliterated in the blitz they built prefab estates on fields outside of Plymouth City to accommodate Plymothians who were bombed out. They finally demolished them when I was fourteen In1969! Learning that history has always given me a sense of place in the world which I have travelled extensively and have lived abroad . Thank you so much for being able to point out so well how important our real history is to us as a nation, and also as individual members of this wonderful country

I quit this job so don’t know the outcome but I sat next to a fairly young girl with two kids who her parents seemed to be largely bringing up. Young, she was always out. Anyway in the six months I knew her it became apparent her eldest boy only about six years old was a bit of a handful at school. However just before I left she said in response to an email from school he hasn’t got gender dysphoria. It became apparent teachers were scheming as to how perhaps they could get rid of this kid or bring him more under control by trying to persuade him that maybe he’d be happier sterilised and mutilated to be redefined as a girl by adults. I don’t know the outcome because I left but that’s what’s going on. Comply or else. If she’s lucky the Government inquiry into this insanity will save him from these unscrupulous adults.

Could not agree more with Rafe because I witnessed, endured, battled and due to their numbers was effectively forced out of teaching Maths, Science and IT plus reaching DH status back in the 1980/90s. After a special 1.5 years B.Ed. I and about 30 other men from industry, mine being Civil Eng. and the RAF retrained to become teachers. Right from the beginning and many of us having teenage children could not believe the influence, indoctrination, political correct content of teaching materials (spawning Woke) that primarily left-wing teachers and LEA advisors had infected into schools. We all mainly did very well, good at discipline and exam results, both popular with kids and parents BUT each of us many having senior positions in industry, i.e. managers and voted Conservative often found due to standing up and often winning disputes in the staff room and school meetings expereinced 'conflict' most days. The stress of teaching is hard enough but being undermined by up-and-coming young straight from University achieving Heads more and more added to the demands being a teacher needed. Also as happened to me, was an out right attempt to get me sacked , when discreetly when seeing a boy swinging on an power cable to the back of a computer, put my hand on the boy's shoulder and told him to stop as the lesson was being given by another teacher. This was reported by that teacher and was used to suspend me for nine months and only due to the mother of the boy attending my hearing to say, no way had I hurt the boy, was I reinstated. But not without the ruling of me attending a very Woke type course given by a very new teacher, I could not do it and chose to leave a job I was good at, had aided many tough kids (as I once was) to mature and get good exam results.. Sadly, for similar reasons, all my fellow mature students on the B.Ed. course left teaching as well. Now I doubt you will find any teachers from industry as it once was when I was at school in the 1960s and no way anyone from the armed services. Listening to Rafe I felt quite emotive as no way did I ever believe it would get so bad as it has now, especially how kids have been brainwashed, i.e. China, will one day turn their parents in for harmful thoughts. That this country is becoming a 1984 nightmare, really got to me and how I and others back then had failed to stop was has now come to be. I wish I could be more positive, but it is now close to 45 years of the take-over of our schools, colleges, Universities and the DOE. I can't really see it changing, especially the 'ice-cold' fact that young people are and will be when adults left wing voters.

As a member of the teaching profession for many years, I totally agree with Rafe's assessment of the current state of teachers and schools. Schools should be, particularly in Primary and KS 3, completely apolitical and teach the facts about their homeland history and our culture, values and morals - the old adage of being taught how to think rather than what to think is ultimately the creeping cancer that has lead to the current situation. Only when children reach a certain age are they able to analyse and assess from a more objective perspective.None of my students over the years would have any real clue of my opinions on current affairs, sexuality, politics etc, why should they ? It is not a teachers remit to indoctrinate pliable minds by foisting ideologies or the dreadful 'my truths' on them. It will take resolve, political will and strong leadership across the next generation to reverse all the damage that has already been done. It is ok to be hugely patriotic and empathetic to others simultaneously, they are not mutually exclusive.

Much as I agree with Rafe's speech and the solutions he offers none of it can be implemented without also dismantling the left's grip on the civil service which is supposed to be politically impartial and accountable to the public. In reality it is neither because it is run by people who are products of the same left wing dominated education system so described by Rafe. There have been numerous examples of how the civil service has and continues to stymie political reform under the Tories in policy areas its senior officials don't happen to agree with. Any future centrist or right leaning government will therefore have to make that its first objective or face the same problems in having its policies enabled.

After the defeat of the Armada the chancellor of the exchequer ordered all the returning sailors to be confined in their ships. This was done to save money and most of them literally starved to death on board the fleet. The Crown was fully complicit in this QE1 not giving a damn for her own people. This shows how the Crown didn't see itself as English, with French being spoken at court back then. The Crown hasn't lost its distain for the English people, with Charles happy to see the English dissapear as a race....this is a genocide, make no mistake.

Your giving a text book and you study it and when you have the exam at the end of the year you answer the question in relation to what you read about in the text, wether it right or wrong or wether you agree with what is in the text book.
