It still doesn't seem real that Matthew Perry is gone. I loved his sarcasm and self-depricating humor. What is going on is that Chandler was secretly dating Monica and Joey was friends with him and trying to help keep the secret. A lot of awkward and funny situations arose due to that secret. Those were not the funniest scenes. I still can't forget when Phoebe got a monkey, and when she was trying to show rock star Chrissy Hynde how to sing.😅

The elevator pitch for Friends was, "It's about the time in your life when your friends are like your family." It's had the staying power it has had for a reason. It's not a highbrow sitcom, but it is very well cast, smartly written, and endearing. It's the epitome of TV comfort food. I think both of those things are why people are so particularly sad to hear about Matthew Perry. It hits right in a lot of people's comfort/happy place. And also, it is well known that the cast of this show are those found family level of friends among each other. (They famously renegotiated their contracts together and equally when the show became famous.) So, we know that the real-life counterparts of our TV "friends" just suffered a loss as big as it would be for the fictional characters, which makes it seem a bit more personal or "real" than just hearing about any other celebrity death. But if you wanted a mainstream sitcom to react to, it would be a good choice.

Well done. Even though the clips are a bit out of context;' some of the basic humor still holds up. It was the characterizations, all of their interactions, and the ridiculous situations that they all found themselves in. The writing was super crisp and smart. Never gets old. Watched the episodes 20 some years ago and still catch random reruns when I can. Each episode has a crazy story line, but loads of other story lines weave in and out, throughout the 10 years of the show.

Lmao, the first clip already got me. He was dating Monica at the time so he kissed her to say goodbye but then realized he did it in front of everyone and then claimed it was because of "Europe" that he had to kiss everyone before saying goodbye. Rachel calls him out on it afterwards. Phoebe was mad at Ross because of a dream she had about him lol. I wish they showed that part because that was the funny part of the whole segment. Surprised Kabir isn't in with the Friends knowledge lol. My wife and I use quotes from it relatively often as jargon when making jokes with friends. Matthew Perry honestly helped an entire generation mold around his dry, witty, sarcastic humor of which I still love.

I remember watching the show when it originally aired. I'd watch it with my brother, the show is hysterical, I have the collection on dvd. It's gonna be hard to watch knowing Matthew passed away. His character Chandler was awesome. Matthew was incredible he really showed what a great actor and his talent for being a jokester. Fun fact, he was allowed in the writers room, so he could get his own jokes on the show. He will never be forgotten, still shocked and saddened he's gone.

I was also saddened to hear he'd passed away. He gave us years of joy. I watch so many shows these days with stars who've already passed, so I don't think I'll struggle to continue watching Friends, but it's weird. Matthew Perry was only a year older than me, and my Dad just passed away a few months ago, and this year feels so surreal to me. I will be glad to move on to 2024.

You can't really appreciate Friends or get why it was so beloved by just watching a few out of context clips. This show ran for 10 years, and it was an ongoing, complex storyline. Think of it as a very long, very awesome "slow burn". We loved it so much because every single character was real to us. We experienced every moment along with them. They were like family to us. My best advice if you want to truly experience this wonderful show is to start at the very beginning. 😊💖

Part of the appeal is how close and connected the actors - i.e., the real people, not just the characters - became right away. They advocated for each other, including during contract negotiations to ensure they all made the same amount of money per episode. I was going out and having way too much fun to watch the show when it was airing, but I've seen it all since. Don't miss the blooper reels. Absolutely hilarious. Unpopular opinion, but the only thing that never resonated for me was the Chandler/Monica love connection. You can't put two of the most neurotic characters together.
