Those cloths can be washed in the washing machine many times, and boiled in water on the stow. But I thought she would bring a cheeseslicer back to US.
The thing with "food in tubes" is that they don't expire/go bad for a long, long time. It's not just like it's a gimmick.

Knäckebröd was traditionally stored above the stove on a rod, hence the hole in the middle. Nowadays it is much more common in smaller, rectangular shapes. There is also tunnbröd (Thin Bread) that traditionally was also dry and hard, like knäckebröd, but I think that a soft variation has become more popular now. Butter knifes are in my experince made of wood, preferably Juniper. I've seen plastic ones but very rarely. I'm a bit surprised she didn't mention the osthyvel (Cheeze Sliser). Shoutout to Norway for inventing this tool that all Swedes have. For Breakfast, we eat cold stuff, Filmjök (kind of like Yoghurt), open sandwiches with leverpastej, Salami, Cheeze and Ham. And a hard boiled egg. Some prefer Porridge, which is the only warm dish I can think of. No sausages, no Black Pudding, no Pancakes, those are Lunch or Dinner Dishes.

She's surprised by food in a tube when she's from a country that has cheese in a spray can 😂😂 Few swedes eat warm, cooked breakfast, we usually eat yoghurt, cereal, sandwiches, tea, coffee, juice, porridge.. stuff like that. If we eat eggs then they are usually boiled.

1:40 The Wettex (from "wet textile") dishcloth was invented in Sweden by the civil engineer Curt Lindquist in 1949. His wife Margareta came up with the name.
The round bread with a hole in the middle looks like that because they used to be hung on a stick near the ceiling in the old days, so that rodents could not reach them. Nowadays, most people buy square hard bread. The butter knife should traditionally be made of wood, but in modern times it is also available in plastic. School children always get to make a butter knife at school so many families have at least one knife made by a child in the kitchen drawer. She forgot to mention the cheese slicer, the ingenious Norwegian invention that all Swedes own.

Besides having the butterknives being made of plastic It's also fairly common that you have a wooden one (I made one in woodworking class once when I was a kid and I think my parents still use it today).

The wodden one is so hard to aquire. Its really a 10 year quest. To first make a child, then have them go to school for 5 years and final make an krife in wood works class.

The wettex dishcloth she talks about is biodegradeable and after a week of use you can boil it in water for 10min or wash it with you landry and you can use it as a new one and after a month or so you can use them as a cleaning tool for the rest of the house and take a new one for the kitchen. Ppl have also used it for gardening by cut it with sissors in strips or smaller bits and mix it with the soil they will retain water like water beads. And as I said they are bio-degradable and the microorganisms in the dirt will eat it and it will not harm your plants. The butterknife isint that good and the basic shape of it is traditionally made out of wood not plastic and they still are around and obviously I prefer real wood butterknifes, and in Swedish school we have wood and metal work classes from like year 4 of primary school and up. And in those classes eveyone makes a butterknife its basicly mandatory to pass the class( we also learn basic sewing along side those ones.
In Belgium we definitely use those cloth wipes too. I can't believe they don't have cloth wipes in the US. She says she keeps those cloths for 8 days... don't tell me she throws the cloths away after 8 days. You can just throw them in the washing machine to clean them. Those egg slicers have been around for decades. I'm 50 and my parents always had one and when I moved out I bought one for me as well. I can't really think of any foods we have here in a tube. We do have Swedish Knäckebröd in supermarkets here in Belgium, but in squares, not big circles. In summer I love Knäckebröd¨with fresh goat cheese and slice of my home grown mini cucumbers on top, and with a drizzle of Sriracha sauce to give it some kick.
You can buy the Swedish crispbread at Ocado and sometimes also at Waitrose in the UK. There are also a few Swedish shops in London that (obviously) have it, including the Swedish Church in Marylebone.
The big round rye crispbread was formally called "spisbröd" (stove bread) in Sweden. Traditionally it was baked seasonally after the harvest. They stored the bread on poles that was hung from the ceiling (that's why there's a hole in the bread) to keep them dry and away from any potential rodents. Nowadays you buy a round pack with about 8-10 crispbread wafers at the store. Small square ones are also available. For more info and pictures search for "knäckebröd" on Wikipedia.
Once I was on vacation in Bulgaria with a very nice black friend from London who had moved to Sweden and got married. We were there for a week and he sensed that he would have problems with the food. But it worked out because he brought half his suitcase full of crispbread from Sweden, which he lived on most of the time on his vacation. And he washed it down with whiskey and beer.

WHAT? They don't have sponge cloths in the US? 😯 It actually surprised me too. Another thing that surprised me is that she didn't choose a cheese slicer. Instead she chose a butter knife? 🤣 Are they that unusual? Maybe it's me as a Swede, who is so used to these that I don't even think about them being different or unique. 🤔 Our butter knives can also be made of wood. It's something all children get to make/carve at school. But the plastic one she showed is probably the most common type in Swedish households. For breakfast, you can eat whatever you want, really. But the most common is a sandwich and coffee or tea. Also yogurt with cereal or a plate of porridge. But the most important thing is COFFEE. You can't work without coffee! 😉☕
Breakfast can vary a lot, as I'm sure it can in any country. For my family and relatives and friends that I've visited for breakfast I'd say it's most common to have a soft bread (some people like the hard stuff for breakfast too, but most people I know eat the hard stuff more like a boost in between meals or to fill up if they had a small lunch). We don't do a lot of American style sandwiches with two pieces of bread, but rather do open faced, usually with butter and a slice of cheese or ham or other breakfast meat. A lot of people also eat something called "filmjölk", which is soured milk. In concept it's similar to Yoghurt, you let the milk ferment with the help of healthy bacteria, which makes it thicker and gives it a longer shelf life, but it's more acidic than most yoghurts, more akin to sour cream, and runnier in texture, somewhere between milk and your typical Yoghurt (you'll just have to try some when you visit, it's hard to explain to someone who has no concept of it). Into the "filmjölk" you put cereal or Muesli or fresh fruit and berries or whatever you like. I know there are people that eat cereal with milk like they do in other countries, but I don't personally know anyone who does. Everyone in my circle would eat it with "filmjölk" (or Yoghurt) and treats cereal as a condiment the same way ketchup is a condiment to a hot dog, and also places cereal and muesli and granola and all those things in the same general category. The "filmjölk" is the main thing you are eating and you are adding to it for taste or to make it more filling or to add grain and fibre to your diet. But again, that's just my circle, I got in a huge argument once in a YT comment because I made too large an assumption based on my personal empirical knowledge, so this time I'll be sure to mention that breakfast can look very different in different households. For drinking a lot of people will have their morning coffee or tea with their breakfast, and might double up with a glass of juice or a glass of "O'boy", which is the most popular chocolate milk powder mix in Sweden. Mixes hot OR cold and tastes great and don't really lump together if mixed cold like a lot of foreign brands tend to do. As far as porridge goes I feel like that is more my grandparents generation. My grandparents eat porridge everyday for breakfast, but I feel like most younger people only eat it once in a while or if it is the latest health trend. Younger people and health trend people might be more into making healthy smoothies for breakfast, like I know my younger sister does this quite a lot. I also think for younger people in general it's not as common to eat the same thing every day for breakfast. My grandparents and even many people my parents generation I've spoken to never vary their breakfast more than buying a different brand of bread or boiled ham instead of smoked ham or apple juice instead of orange, but personally I bore very quickly with eating the same thing over and over. You don't eat the same dinner every day, so why is it expected you do it with your breakfast, in a time when we have the options and the financial opportunity to be varied? Some days I'll just have some bread, some days I'll have porridge, or "filmjölk" or yoghurt, or a grilled cheese, or even sometimes I fancy a cup of gruel, or I'll have leftovers from dinner night before, or I just won't feel like anything and just skip breakfast (I know breakfast is important, but I'm not pushing myself to eat anything I don't feel like), and I've heard similar sentiments from people my age (mid 20's) or younger.

You can wash Wettex in your washingmachine and they are ecofriendly and you can compost them. I use butter knives made of wood.
There are smaller rectangle-shaped knäckebröd that are more common for people to buy than the big wheel-shaped ones. That is more common in places where there are more people eating. It is also a nod back to the past when people would dry them on poles above the wood stove. The habit of having stuff in tubes probably stems from people being more active outdoors here in the past plus that if lasts longer that way. since you asked what we eat for breakfast, I go for 1 cheese sandwich, 2 knäckebröd, one with chili cheese spread, and 1 with Keso (cottage cheese) with a sprinkle of grillkrydda and a bowl of müsli with yogurt. Drink wise, 1 glass of oatley (Oat Milk) mixed with oboy (chocolate powder) 1 glass of proviva nypon (probiotic fruit/berry drink the one mentioned being rosehip) and 1 glass of orange juice. Have to point out that you will most likely get a different answer from almost everyone but the most common thing would probably be to eat a sandwich for breakfast.
Usually our butter knives are made of wood, you usually always get to make one in craft at school, but they can also be made of plastic or metal.

Knäckebröd, we cant live without it. The classic butter knife is wood handle and metall blade or just in wood (as every kid make at school). Egg slicer is a must, and a cheese slicer (osthyvel)
Apparently Americans only use paper towels or wet wipes. I've even heard of a company in the US that are now selling these rags for a premium. Completely blew my mind when I first heard of it

We have metal butter knifes too but they are often made of silver and are used for more fancy dinners. Then knifes made of wood and last the one in plastic that is very cheap but have pretty coulors.

Normal breakfast in Sweden: open-topped sandwich, with either: -Cheese (+banana, pepper cucumber or jam) -Ham -Salami -Liverpaste & pickled cucumber -Caviar & sliced eggs. -Tubed cheese in many flavours. Then to drink: -O'boy (chocolate milk) -Juice -Milk -Coffe -Tea. and/or a bowl of: -milk or sour milk with: cereal, musli or knäckebröd + either raisins or banana or dried fruit. -porrige (like oatmeal but rice and semolina works too) + milk + jam, sugar or butter. -Yoghurt
we don't have those plastic knives, even if they can be bought, we have wooden ones instead. It is very popular with wooden butter knife. For breakfast in Sweden it is common for us to eat oatmeal or cottage cheese, do you have cottage cheese in the UK? till oatmeal we have either applejam or lingonberry jam and milk. with that we can have boiled eggs and a sandwich and a glass of juice. I always eat oatmeal in the morning with either Apple ham or lingonberry jam (we have apples from our own trees and lingonberries we pick in the forest and make jam from them) I usually have a sandwich with "Kalle's caviar" and a hard-boiled egg on top in slices. And with that a glass of orange juice. Top breakfast!!
Swedish Wettex cloths are made from wood pulp and can be recycled as papper.

A cool way to use the round hard bread (knäckebröd) is to use it as a pizza. You put a thin layer on it with butter and then do just as a ordinary pizza ... About the plastic knifes for spreading butter ... I prefer wooden knifes ...
For breakfast, I think most people have either yoghurt and musli or the Swedish "fil" which is sour milk or oat porrige. Some just drink some tea and eat open sandwiches.
The spreading knife is also available in wood, even better than plastic.

She's so amazed by such ordinary things lately I stopped buying dishcloths and just use microfibre cloths instead that you can ust put in the washing machine. Paper towels are made from trees of which we have an abundance in the world and especially in Sweden, using natural materials that grow naturally is not eco-unfriendly. But it's certainly nice to feel like a good person.

As someone who is born in Sweden and lived here for 30 years, my breakfast is consisting of 2 cups of coffe and a ciggarette.
breakfast, usualy I gave some knäckebröd with something kalles kaviar and eggs, cheese (tube type at times, that shrimp one is good), ham... and some cucumber, bell pepper, lettuce... to that a glass of juice or milk and frequently a fruit (apple, orange...). those butter knives are also available in wood, often juniper, birch or beech, i use the wooden ones to stir when I fry things or when baking to cut dough...
The Wettex towel can even be boiled if it gets to dirty. Kills all germs. That way a Wettex towel can be used like 2 months. Pro tip. ;)

Sometimes I have a toast with a sliced hardboiled egg with Kalles caviar on top, Other times I´ll have some knäckebröd ( hard bread) with ham or cheese. It depends on what I feel like. Yoghurt with cornflakes or filmjölk (sour milk) you know sour cream well we have milk done in the same way and some are even flavoured. Like for christmas it comes tasting like gingerbread.

What is a Swedish breakfest... well that is a varied subject. Depends of what school you follow. Classic, Modern or just normal. It usually contains some sort of sandwich (soft or hard, toasted or not), with classic stuff like butter and Cheese, Ham, Salami, Pastrami, or other saucage, Liver paste, Egg or Keso (cottage cheese), kaviar, avocado slices (modern), slices of cucumber or tomato or some other variants of cheese, ham and vegetables. And on top of that you usually see some sort of cereals (Cornflakes, Rice puffs, Mussli, Wetabix etc) in milk or sour milk or yoghurt. Or some sort of porridge (Classic) often with some sort of jam, extra sugar and butter or applecurd or not. After that you could ad a glass of milk, or orange juice or something like that, and a cup of tea or coffe. And many people do ad a fruit of some kind. It is also rather common to serve something like a brittish breakfast - iow, Baked beans, bacon and fried eggs, and more. Some call it brunch because its more of a lunch. In the cities avocado toasts, chrimpsandwich and such are popular. But some just drink some strong coffee, and take a ciggarette. Some other just drink protein shakes (because they are on a diet or working out). ... If I would say whats classically Swedish, it would be a propper sandwich, and some cereal or oatmeal based stuff, with a glass of milk or orange juice. IMHO. Cheers.

@@nerdgirl8978 I just mentioned porrigde I know. Oatmeal is probably the most common, except around christmas, then Rice porridge is the way to go. You also have the "Mannagrynsgröt". Dont realy know what its called in english. And how could I forgett the waffles and pancakes. ;)
I dont often eat breakfast, but when I do, I turn 12yo and take those soft sandwishes and dip them in chocolate milk so it gets so soaked I can almost drink the sandwish haha ^^

Knäckebröd is very nice. I would guess that it was mainly invented in order for the bread to last a long period of time whitout going bad, they have been used as a staple food for the poor in order to survive. They usaly contains whole grains, and not just regular wheat, the main grain these would contain is Rye.. If im not 100% misstaken the shape of those circles ones with a hole in it is only shaped like that in order to hang them up in a ceiling to prevent pests like rats for going for them back in the days. The word for these on English would be like "Crispbread" they are where popular in Sweden,Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway and i think Estonia aswell, also Germany i belive. If u get your hands on some nice knäckebröd, i recommend u putting a decent ammount of butter on them due to the fact that they are very dry/crisped. Then put some cheese or melted cheese on them. They taste nice atleast, i recommend everyone to try them out if they can get there hands on some, i prefer to eat knäckebröd at breakfest , than to eat white bread. My regular type of breakfest is either knäckebröd, some juice and something to put on the knäckebröd, if im not eating that im going for a english breakfest with sausage, bacon and beans instead. Those tube food items is indeed popular here, i would say that the store i worked at once atleast had over 20+ diffrent kinds of tubed cheese alone, then other type of tubed food items other than cheese. We got alot of diffrent tubed melted cheese flavours, ranging from jalapeno, blue cheese, ham, shrimp, crayfish, raindeer, moose, to all sort of diffrent stuff. My favorite tubed cheese is either shrimp or raindeer. Raindeer is so good, much better than moose i would say
Spreadable on a tube is, as someone wrote earlier, good. lasts longer, does not become contaminated as it can be when using a knife in a container. and easy to take on trips. a tube of spread and some bread
when it comes to food in tubes you can find almost any flavor you want it's a creamy sauce with your favorite flavor goes great with a sandwich or a hot sandwich with maybe ham like I do I go for the bacon flavor a ham and an egg o cheese
I think osthyvel is a typical Swedish kitchen tool also
The crispbread is not something foreigners usually have a problem with, but Kalleskaiviar is another matter. Common thing found on a Swedish breakfast table is sour milk and liver paste, sometimes also pickled herring. I've never seen these things on a breakfast table in the UK.

The hole in the round hard bread is from a time when you hang the bread on a stick by the stove/fire to keep it dry and hard.

Knäckebröd the hard round bread Kim shows is a traditional Swedish bred and the big round shape with a hole in the middle is the traditional shape(there are other smaller shapes nowadays also) the hole in the middle was used to put it on a rod so that the bread could be dried.

I think the English translation for knäckebröd is Crispbread.
I don't know if you still have it but I use to visit Gatwick frequently for a year 2014. I then bought soft squeezed cheese in a tube with shrimp flavor that reminder me a being back in Sweden. So check your grocery store next time you're there, and if you find it comma try it out!

You can find knäckebröd at IKEA. Perhaps not in the wheel shape, it sometimes comes in smaller rectangular shapes too.
We eat filmjölk for breakfast, Kalles Kaviar on Knäckebröd. We had two Englishmen on visit here. They couldn’t eat it! They could eat some fermented herring, that smells worse than you think. Still worse.

Common breakfast is bread, butter, ham and cheese and juice if you ask me. xD But breakfast is SOOOO varied these days so there's nothing standard in breakfast anymore, each person has their own types and ideas of breakfast. :P Personally I rarely eat breakfast as I have a night job, and I have not eaten a proper breakfast on a daily basis since I was in middle school where it was part of the education plan in the school cafeteria. And it wasn't till I started junior high school where I decided that I'd rather sleep in than wake up earlier to have breakfast. :) My daily food plan consist of Lunch, Dinner and Dessert... ...occationally an extra snack. :P

No real butterknife is not made out of plastic or metal, a real one is made out of juniper wood! That smell is everything. As a American she doe not understand the value of a Shoe Horn xD
WTF?! Is butter knives something that isn't an international thing?! I have 13 of those (I counted). It's hard to spread the hard butter with a regular knife, especially on a soft bread.

3:30 that is not a towel. That is a speciall product called wettex that is sort of pump and salt with a nylon mesh inside it. It wets super fast and also dryes super fast. Its only made in one place. Its not a towel, its not fabric.

I was just as amazed as you. That the US only seem to use paper towels. Think of the amazing amount of paper they must use a year...sick... Talk about create waste problems and use a lot of woodmass for paper thats only throws away... And then they don't have as good waste handling either so.... Haha 😂 these Americans... Sometimes It feels they are lightyears behind, and sometimes they are on point...
