    Truly unique and refined cars, personally I have always liked them. Christol example of class and of cars that do not flaunt. Too bad it has closed, really.

    When I was a kid, I had a set of tiny toy cars, made (I believe) in England. Along with the Ferrari and the Citroen was a Bristol. I thought it looked pretty cool; but I lost track of the company and assumed it was long defunct. I was amazed to find it was still in business and still making cars (well, sort of). I guess the main reason for buying one of these cars is to experience the thrill of driving down the street and hearing bystanders shout out: "HOLY S**T, what's that??!!"

    @@Taketimeout3 Look for Dr Becky's You Tube channel, where she explains Brian May's doctoral dissertation in astrophysics, and yes I'm talking about the guitarist who also built Red, his guitar. He's also an astrophysicist, and he calculated the speed the Sun is orbiting the Milky Way, using cosmic dust. It's literally, and figuratively, far out.

    In the late 60's/70's, big Bristols were always a sight to behold with their huge American Chrysler V8's giving them class leading performance. As times moved on, sadly the cars didn't really evolve that much even though they remained eye wateringly expensive.

    Seeing as the Bristol Car Company ceased to exist probably makes one hope that all those hulks have been restored by now. The original cars were trophies of war, BMWs seized from Germany and modified by Bristol.

    That is not even close to being true. Bristol used Bayerische Motoren engines in certain cars that they built. They were not stolen BMW cars and the Bayerische engines they were using was based on British engine designs.

    The man who chose the 1990s Alfa likely sold his car many years ago at a significant loss. The vintage Bristol owner would likely still own it and could expect to sell it at break even or profit. No contest.

    Bristol's did not then stop making aeroplanes. They were deeply involved in the Brabazon and the Britannia. Bristol cars were made at the same time and were showcased in Filton on the opposite side of the road. The early Bristol cars were based on the BMW such as the 328. The later ones migrated to American V8 engines.

    Bristol cars were not based on BMW they used engines from Bayerische Motoren that were based on British engine designs after WW2.

    There was also some sort of asociation with the wonderfully engineered 'Bristol Commercial Vehicles' - they certainly at one time shared the same 'script' logo.

    A gentleman's car and an engineer's car. I'm sure that once bitten by the Bristol bug nothing else will measure up. I still enjoy re-reading Leonard Setright's articles, particularly on his beloved Bristols. I see, below, the inevitable joke about a pair of Bristols. I'm very partial to these in both senses of the expression, but if we're talking just about the cars, how about a 411 and a 401?

    +promerops A gentleman's car? Definitely! An Engineer's car? Not quite, to say the least. The chassis of even the latest Blenheim's was still based on a prewar BMW construction. The engines and gearboxes were simply bought from Detroit, and even the Blenheim's taillights were bought from Vauxhall (Senator), and later on, Audi (A4).

    promerops If you mean a lavish interior with rich, hand-stitched leather and hand-polished walnut, then yes, it's a very refined car indeed. Technically however, they are dinosaurs. That's not a bad thing at all, but it's not very refined either...

    Maybe less electronics to go wrong is a good thing ? Modern cars seem to have loads of software glitches with all the gimmicks they build in nowadays , Mercedes i know have lots of gremlins

    How ironic: I opened this file to see what was being said and what comes up? An advert for the new Mercedes E Class! I, for one, have had quite enough of these four-wheeled computers, which will leave you completely stranded at the drop of a hat. Yes, the old Russian cars were unbearably crude and nasty, but it was always said that they could be coaxed back to life with the aid of whatever you find at the roadside, where you've just broken down. What our friend is patently unaware of is the painstaking refinement that goes into a Bristol. The old story about the Rolls Royce that broke a half shaft somewhere in the wilderness bears consideration - Rolls, I believe, flew out a new half shaft complete with mechanic to fit it. When the owner enquired about the bill, the mechanic told him that there was no charge, as RRs do not break their half shafts. Setright's riposte to this was that a Bristol's half shafts are made in such a way that, should a breakage occur (in the unlikely event...), it will take place in a pre-determined place where a key is formed, allowing the car to continue its journey. This is just one example of the thoughtful engineering that goes into a Bristol. Our friend does the engineers at Filton a grave injustice, but I don't suppose it would bother them.

    Did they ever throw in a proper Chrysler engine into a Bristol? I mean like the Jensen's 383 or 440? Or the Monteverdi with the 426 Hemi? The Blenheim 2 from just a few short years ago seemed odd using a Chrysler aftermarket crate engine 360 rather than one of the newer Hemi or SRT Hemi? Heck, for the price they were charging, the Blenheim 2 should have had the Viper V10 and automatic transmission like they used in the 4 door truck (as opposed to the hi=performance truck that preceded it). That truck could tow, had four doors, and could still run 13 second quarter miles, all with an automatic transmission. For an exotic car, the Blenheim should have used the V10/auto or for the 'entry level' the SRT 392 Hemi that was available in the SRT cars. The 300 hp crate engine 360 was a little low rent...

    Each to there own but I never thought that Bristol were justified in receiving the praise that they enjoy, namely that the looks of the things are just bloody awful and the interior trim very amateurish , styling very basic and a price tag that puts the cars into a special place occupied by the likes of Jensen and Aston Martin . I would put these cars in the same bracket as Reliant .guises To see real quality and styling , the Interceptor in any of its three guises is light years ahead .

    The early Bristol cars,from the 40's and 50's ,were built to aircraft standard, had a version of BMW's six-cylinder pushrod hemi-head. engine and were outstanding. I believe Jay Leno owns a Bristol 403.

    @@bighands69 Not keen on anything like a GTR. The problem with Bristol is they never moved on and updated their models. Their range of cars appealed to very few, had QC issues and very little dealer network.
