My late father had a fun time on brake van, he cadged a lift from a Hoo yard to Hither Green freight this being early or mid seventies and he thought my uncle was up front on the 33 so expecting him to stop at Gravesend where he had his car parked, the driver forgot to just dip the train so he could hop off and so this train trundled through Gravesend wending its way finally stopping at Hither Green Lee curve next to the TMD, this was of course at the end of the day and the guard and driver were knocking off for the night and my poor father ended up scrounging some cushions in Hither Green box and got the first down to Gravesend next morning... he was in a foul temper for weeks and the driver got a proper hard time from me uncle who had seniority of the Hoo drivers and my father when he knew that driver was on his patch he made him eat single yellows and reds all the way or giving him the Grain token he made him walk all the way to the box. In the end the driver got transferred to another yard far far away from the unfriendly Hoo Jnc "mafia" as he called it.

There were plenty of depots like that on BR. Inter depot rivalry was common to, replaced by company rivalries these days 😠 Was also punishment centres to where the "naughty boys" were sent! I found that quite amusing 😂 nowadays they'd just get the sack!!

I am really enjoying your videos. Your knowledge is useful to those of us who admire railways from afar. I built a dapol kitmaster brake in this guise and you have inspired me to further mods next time with the roller baring replacement. Excellent work!!

Nice work. I'm curious about the Fen Drayton trip. I presume you had to run-round the brake van as well as the locomotives in order for the brake van to be at the back so the guard could close the manual crossing barriers? How did that operation take place?

Quite complex shunting to get the van on the other end, but easy once shown. Planned video dedicated to Fen Drayton sand in the planning stages where it will be explained (shown) in detail......

@@Wallsrail Looking forward to that, especially as Fen Drayton is on 'my patch' so to speak.
