The Mitchells Vs. The Machines movie commentary reaction
The Mitchells Vs. The Machines is as much about a father and daughter learning to understand each other as it is about a family road trip through the robot apocalypse and we loved making this movie commentary and reaction for it.

Michael Rianda, the director of the movie, is like one of the coolest human beings ever. (He worked on the first season of gravity falls, feel like you may know that from the GF comment) But when he was working on getting the movie started everyone at Sony was like "oh yknow theres no need to hurry" but he really wanted to like work hard on it right from the start so he started making posters for it and everything. To, i guess put it out into the world so they would see what the movie would be like and it worked! He even contacted a friend who he worked with on gravity falls and was like "will you please just make some storyboards for this" and his friend did it in exchange for the new playstation. This was really a passion project for him and i think you can feel that so strongly!

My favorite part about this movie is how clean the Appocolyps was. Since it was was mostly done with non-violent capturing, there was very little damage. To the point that only a few months later everything looks back to normal.

Arron definitely comes across the "most" easily identifiably as austistic but me & many others actually view the entire Mitchel family as nerodivergent & here's why - . The way they all seem to struggle to fit in with others (I mean your neighbours have to think you're pretty darn weird to make a whole Facebook page about how much they don't like you) . The way the mum wants so badly (at least until the end) to be seen as a "normal" family . The way none of them (except maybe the dad) were actually comfortable with the long period of eye contact (+ the way that Katy seems to stim by pulling on her hoodie strings when feeling stressed) . The way none of them could seem to get the 1 to 3 hand thing right or were comfortable being overly touchy with each other despite the fact that they were about to try to escape evil robots so could have potential died (you know if this wasn't a family film) . The way they kept failing to copy what the Posey's (aka the perfect representation of what a perfect nerodivergent family is "supposed" to be) did . The way arronn & Katie show affection for eachother by repeadley hitting eachother when they're excited . The way the mum has the capacity for extream rage but it surprises everyone because she's been doing such a good job of repressing it (one of the things that Pal picked up about the family when it scanned thier photo is that one of them is hiding anger issues which obviously later is revealed to be referring to the mum) which is actually pretty common in nerodivergent women because of how from a young age females are usually socialised to mask more then males & therefore usually find it "easier" to hide thier symptoms . The way the dad doesn't seem to do well with social cues or even get when he's hurting people's feelings (ie. he's wife repeadley kicking him in the leg to try to get him to stop talking badly about Katie's goodbye video) & finally (except for the mum) all of the Mitchel's have a potential special interest with Aaron's obviously being dinosaurs, Katie's being film making & the dad's being wildlife

But even though the Mitchells have their issues they still genuinely love each other and ugh it's so nice and wholesome. I forget people actually live like this yanno? Actually have that? I like to live vicariously through Katie.

the relationship between the siblings is so cute and so relatable for me. i’m the queer older sister, my younger brother is autistic. while i’m fairly social, my brother struggles with social situations and communication, and he doesn’t really have his own friends yet (i know my parents are trying to help him with that, at least). we’ve always been that sibling duo that spends a lot of time together. we have similar interests (movies, shopping, music, food, fashion), i would take him to the mall a lot when i was in high school, i’ve always prided myself on “getting him”. he adjusted really quickly once i left for college, but he was definitely upset about it before i moved out and i miss him a lot

The family photos crack me up for two reasons - one, they’re more interesting than the standard posed photos and two, the photographer basically screwed them over by not giving them another shot at the perfect photo. I also love how the photo that came with the frame is still included with the family photos despite knowing it came with the frame, and that they couldn’t be bothered with removing the price sticker.

Loved this movie when it first came out, watched it with my family and cried so much!! Plus the art style and direction is fantastic, including the character designs, definitely a favourite of mine and something I study since its so unique in its presentation. This movie is just relatable but also such a ode to animation and film especially with editing and amalgamation of 3D, 2D and some live action elements. Related to Katie a lot to since I still have videos and movies I made when I was younger, so kind of just made me feel seen (it actually freaked me out how much I related to her character and the family plus we also have a pug like monchi, love it beyond belief!!) haha

I actually don’t mind the slightly dated aspects of the movie, seeing as the movie is set at a very specific time. I feel like that stuff will age quite well. And they got one thing right - the huge global disaster that kept people locked up in 2020, that’s gonna age _very_ well! 😂

  • @LangkeeLongkee

    @LangkeeLongkee

    Жыл бұрын

Yeah. I personally don't get why people say they don't like when movies are dated? And then pine for movies from the past that are so quintessentially from that era. It confuses me. A movie IS time period, it's not suddenly bad because you loved through that period semi-recently. I love when something is set in a clearly defined time, or era, or you play with time. In my personal writing I like to play with time periods that never existed. People have what looks like smart phones but dress like it's the 50s through 70s and still use land lines and read news papers. Or they dress like it's the early 19th century but own very obviously mid century things.

  • @Ar7ifur

Weirdly I love how dated this movie is. It isn't meant to take place in 2022, I believe it's meant to be 2013 or 2018, which makes the film oddly nostalgic

This is the first movie in years that does a family dynamic as well as The Incredibles and I'd waited years for that shit. On top of the movie love in general it has which speaks to my dorky self. On top of being genuinely riotous. On top of neither downplaying Katie's issues with her parents or simplifying Rick's down to boomer syndrome. Especially that one. It's an insanely nuanced film.

Idk guys, some of those references were just off enough that it makes me think they either had some sort of personal value to the creator or it just made them laugh and they don't care if it didn't work because it's their joy! I think if it was just to relate to the audience they would have picked more mainstream references.

It's a little weird to me that some parents won't just let their kids have hobbies and encourage that for the enjoyment of it and not its monetary value. There's more to life than making money and it's great that they can be won over if it makes you money, but not all our actions should be for the goal of money. As much as I'm happy that my mom has become encouraging of my hobby since I told her it's become something I've created profit from, I would have LOVED to have grown up having my creative endeavors encouraged by her so I wouldn't have to have great shame and doubt associated with self expression the whole time.

I remember when I first watched this, I was home alone and just wanted something to watch and I loved it so much that I told my parents that they must rewatch it with me. It took a while but when we finally had the opportunity to have a sorta family movie night, a few minutes in both of my parents looked at me and said, "You like this because you're literally the main character, don't you?" Being a heavily bullied gay kid with, at the time undiagnosed, autism who was often outcast from my peers because of my special interests, is currently in film school, and also has a strained relationship with my dad who doesn't quite understand what's going on with me and hasn't really made an effort to, this movie hit me really hard.

What other movie is going to have you crying over a tiny wooden moose? The only thing I thought was a bit much was Aaron's voice; I think an actual kid voice would've been a better choice. Speaking of voices, Olivia Colman is the actress for PAL. Apropos for the freaking Queen to voice the villain.

Personally, I love when movies go the extra mile to make it feel like the time period that it is, plus I feel like its rare to get a film taking place in the 2010's era! Hopefully we get more bc the humor of that time was already cringey and outdated when it was happening lol

Love that Danny McBride and Eric Andre are in this! I just watched season 2 of The Royal Gemstones (it's amazing - do yourself a favor and watch it!) and they were both so great in it. Danny McBride makes some of the greatest comedies, they should get way more love. Eastbound and Down is a classic (except the final episode) and The Royal Gemstones is beyond amazing and calls out megachurches being beyond evil without stuffing it down your throat. Every character in that show is fantastic and the actors are brillant. The acting, the writing, the scene setups/backgrounds are very well done.

I love this movie dearly. It's probably one of the best animated movies in existence, and on my top movies of all time. I relate a lot to both Katie (for her creative dream and being queer) and Aaron (for his autism and special interest). It's very well-written and I'm so happy that several members from the Gravity Falls team worked on this to make it the masterpiece that it is.

Great movie. It is very rare for me to truly like how every character in a movie was written. The family members are awesome (except the Dad and will explain later), but I enjoyed Eric & Debrorahbot 5000, PAL, both types of robots, the Posey family, and even Mark Bowman. The side characters served their purposes in an enjoyable way to me. I did not hate the Dad and knew he would learn by the end of the film. The older I get, the less I tolerate characters who treat their kids like this though. I understand that they love their kids and want to protect so I still like them. I understand that they are often oblivious in these stories, but he was explained to that he and his self-centeredness was 98% of the problem and still acted exactly the same. He does not try to learn about anyone or anything and just focuses on his satisfaction until he has no other options. I actually thought it was very clever of the writers that the thing that truly made him change was being shown the clip of his daughter revealing to her brother that she was doing what he does to her.

Hey guys, love your videos! Quick note about disability language: the disability community encourages people to use "people first" language, meaning you put the person first and the disability second (e.g. "the brother has confirmed Autism" or "people with disabilities."). Some people with disabilities prefer disability-first language (e.g. "I am Autistic") because they believe that their disability is a part of them and shouldn't be stigmatized or sugar-coated. However, the typical best practice is to use person-first language unless you're talking about someone who specifically uses disability-first language about themselves. You guys are great about being conscious allies, and I appreciate knowing that you will receive this comment with grace :).

It's pretty common practice (within the wider autistic community at least) to use disability first language as autism isn't something you get, it's something you're born with. I don't "have" autism - it isn't something I can leave at the door. I was born with it - it's intrinsic to who I am.

@@enrapta5126 very valid, and totally reasonable! I think it's a personal preference for everyone with ASD, but I think a part of that is letting people identify themselves. If you don't have ASD and you're speaking in a general sense, I think the best thing is to use people-first language. But as long as it's said with respect, there's not a hard line of right/wrong terminology.

13:35 I started attending college in covid so we never actually had orientation, so while I totally understand obviously why Katy would want to be there for it, I have to ask, is it really that crucial as y'all said? (And also why do they need a whole week for that?)

i never had orientation because covid said no and the school did nothing about it. luckily i'm studying something that's creative and i'm a quick learner but i'm currently taking rigging which is like the biochem of my major so wish me luck. also i watched this movie so much when it came out because i related to Katie and the art and animation style was so good but i haven't watched it since watching it with my parents(separately). i think it was this movie or Luca when i realized how much more i loved animated movies and got excited about them and i wanted to share that excitement with someone but it just wasn't like that with them

I think the problem with the dad wasn’t that he was trying “too” hard exactly, but rather wasn’t trying the right things or trying in the right way. Like you said he still wasn’t seeing who she was now so he kept missing the mark on how to connect with her. But as he got to spend time with her through this crazy apocalypse and finally at the very end understood where she was coming from, and who she’d become. He was able to properly form a connection with her and see things from her perspective too 🥺💕. Beautifully done in my opinion😁👏🏾👏🏾 (And I love the somewhat casual representation they had in this too. Like they didn’t make her being queer a whole thing or all she was as a character and it didn’t distract from he actual story. But at the same time you could tell she was obviously queer. Same thing with her brother and being a little on the autism spectrum😊👌🏾)

Finally! Kindred souls! NO one else I've seen on youtube shared my opinion about the Dragostea Din Tei/Numa Numa song. This movie is gold, but the decision to go with a remix over the famous original meme song was garbage.
