    It's so funny that this 3 year old would pop up in my feed right now. My "surprise chick" from Murray McMurray (yes, I fell for it) turned out to be a Golden Lace Polish rooster and there's no way he would survive the ridiculous cold we're having right now. So . . . he's living in my tiny house until the weather improves. In a dog crate at night and he wears a harness with a poop bag during the day while he wanders around the house. He's a little confused, but safe and warm.

    Love this! 😊 We have around 85 chickens (at last beak count) housed in a former cattle barn. For the winter in Michigan I insulate their roosts that are inside the barn (4 separate spots with about 30 chickens in each at night) with reflective bubble wrap, tarps, and thick plastic (so they can see out, or I can see in) - as well as a light bulb (or heat lamp as needed) in certain roots if they need extra heat. Also they have a heated -base chicken waterer and various other watering stations during the day (yes, those do freeze - but get replaced every day.) If the sun is out, they like to sit on wood pallets inside the barn (out of the wind) where the sun shines in... or take lots of dust baths in the dirt floor side of the barn. They do venture outside, (single file) on a shoveled path up to the house where they can feast on the wild bird seed overflow and scratch around wherever there is bare ground. (In the summer they have a huge fenced in pasture.) As for frozen combs, I put a good herbal salve ('Complete Tissue and Bone' ointment - or 'All Heal Salve') on everyone's combs and wattles down the line while they are roosting just for prevention. (Gotta climb into the coop with them...) Most chickens tuck their head into their wing... others sit close to the next chicken and keep snug and warm. I also have 3-4 golf balls in each of the nesting boxes that warm up like little heaters when a chicken sets on them. So all in all, they over-winter just fine. 💕

    Higby's story made me cry. When temps go into the 40s, my girls come indoors. I made them 'nesting towers' from thrift-shop barstools and skirts--I put a scrap-wood platform on the leg braces and stapled skirt curtains around the seat. They love to hop up into their towers at night! I sleep near them, and I'm out like a chloroformed baby. Ahhh.

    Your chickens are darling. So sorry to hear about Higby. Such a cool chicken. I don’t know if you are still reading comments on this video. This is my first Midwest winter with my chickens. I raised them from chicks. I had to move my chickens into a temporary room we built in one of our sheds. It’s insulated, so is their coop, and we have a small heater that keeps the temperature around 30-40 degrees. Before this, I tried to let them acclimate to the weather as so many resources have said to do. We decided to have a panel heater in their coop that kept things around 15-30 degrees in subzero temperatures, depending on how cold it was outside. My single combed chickens ended up with some frostbite. One of my poor girls, it, too, was almost the whole comb. She loves to be held and she would crawl into my jacket and stick her head in as far as it would go. My hubby built the warming room and fortunately most of her comb and the other chickens combs seem to be much better. The problem is some of their combs have become pale and dry. I have been giving them more protein such as tuna, minnows, too only once, scrambled eggs, scratch,… also extra supplements in their water like poultry cell or electrolytes. I have used Mushers, coconut oil, black seed oil,… on their combs. They get DE in their feed, perhaps not enough, but I haven’t seen any worms, mites or lice on them. I’m concerned about their health. We did switch their food to a layer feed ground locally last fall. Could they be missing a key nutrient? The only thing is it’s just a few chickens with this. My old girl that we have, that came from a friend, has a beautiful comb and eats the same foods. So I’m stumped. If you see this I really could use some help. I don’t know who to ask. Thanks Madam President of Chickenlandia. Signed: Mama Rooster (That’s what my girls call me.) lol

    It's so sweet that you love your birds. I can't stop grieving for the few hens I lose--their absence guts me to the core. A hawk attacked my Josie near Thanksgiving when my vet was booked up. I nursed Jojo for 10 days, even sleeping beside her. The vet found the hawk pierced her spine, and I had to let her go. Still, I'm grateful for those 10 days of loving intimacy we shared. Six months later, I'm writing this through tears. I love my birds. I'm glad that you do, too.

    Please don't give up! The painful lessons along the way teach us how to outsmart varmints and protect our birds. I found a hole dug under my chainlink coop, so I dug a moat around the base, lined it with L-shaped hardware mesh, wired the top seam to the mesh on the coop, then refilled my moat. Now, anything digging will wind up with its nose in a steel-mesh corner, HAR!

    Omg...i have 4 buff orpingtons, it was 6° out and i brought them in and put them in the laundry room, they destroyed the laundry room, there was an egg on the floor, an egg on the shelf, they pooped all over and dug in the dead plant i had in there. I had a heater in their coop i should have just turned that on

    Someone may have asked this I have just viewed this video. Why didn't you heat your coop room for all of the flock to be warm. Wouldn't an extension cord from the house to a heater do the trick?

    I would need to cut a hole in the coop to get electricity in it and I’m just not wanting to do that right now. Plus, it’s better for my other chickens to not have the supplemental heat since they really don’t need it. 🐔🐔🐔

    I have ten bantams and two small Old English Game birds. My inner coop, nesting box and inner run all have 4-6 inches of insulation on out side covered by plastic 4 inches open about 4 feet above the ground this is in side a larger run also side and roof covered with plastic. The plastic keep most of rain and snow out. But was mostly for our winds of 20-40 MPH most days. It was often -15to -25 at night but daytime was 20 above or more. I added a heated waterer to coop but just let chicks grow thicker feathers, the first of Jan we got our first blizzard. I turned on the brooder heater on the wall which goes to 100 degrees. kept them in inner run for three days and added balls of suet with meal worms mixed. in for added protein. They all wintered and to my surprise kept laying eggs. We only had 6 or 7 days where it did not get to at least 15 above I found if I opened to outer run they ran around for 5 minutes and back to the smaller warmer area. I live in norther great plains.

    Since you have so many elderly chickens, can you place a source of heat in the coop or somewhere for those who can't handle the cold anymore?

  • @WelcometoChickenlandia

    I have thought about using one of the low wattage radiant heaters that are much safer, there’s one called the Sweeter Heater and another called Cozy Coop, I think. Both are much safer than a heat lamp. However, they become an issue if power is lost, which happens a lot here in the winter. Better to just bring the super old ones into the garage or into the bathroom. :)

    In Canada we have two race of chicken that are made for our winters, White Chantecler and Partridge Chantecler..They don't have combs. Anyway, I also have two leghorn that I got in 2020 because they were all going to be sent to slauther house because of Covid... Those two do not like cold Temp. I made an isolated chicken coop with a nice window with heat and a hot red lamp on a timer. The heater is not on the timer, always starts when the temperature gets too cold. We also have a heat censor in the coop I can check the temp and humidity remotely on my cell phone. So, I manage to keep the temp at around 12-15 degres Celcius close to the ceiling of the coop and at the floor level the temp is much lower, So the chicken can choose which part of the coop they prefer to be Temperature wise. The two Chantecler are often close to the floor level. Maybe organizing an isolated coop with heat for your old hens could let them decide where they prefere to be. Oh yea also, I open the door during nice winter days and I put a thick curtain in the door way to keep the temperature level. Just organising it to let a place for the hens to get out if they want. Suprizingly the temperature is staying very well at an acceptable level with the curtain, even close to 15 C when there's no wind. Too much wind I close the door.Anyway hope you'll find it useful. Could spare you lots of stress. Thanks for all your videos. Very useful.

    Hey miss President. I heard some disturbing news that was told to my hubby from a person who used to have chickens. this is what he told my hubby " If you find a chicken with yolk on its face then you have to get rid of that chicken ASAP". Is this true? If true or false what can be done to prevent this and what is the recoarse? Help Us To a new chicken owner whos chicks have not layed yet but who are 21 weeks old, And yes their Nest are ready and waiting cant wait. Thank you. AGIAN

  • @WelcometoChickenlandia

    @WelcometoChickenlandia

    Well, what that could mean is that that particular chicken is eating eggs. I would not get rid of the chicken, but rather I would collect eggs more often and also put some golf balls in the nesting boxes to discourage them from pecking at eggs. I suppose if you sold eggs it would be much more of an issue, but I do know egg sellers who have successfully dealt with egg eating. Just takes a little patience. You should also make sure you are offering a calcium supplement like oyster shell, and consider upping their protein intake if that happens. It takes a lot for me to tell someone to get rid of a chicken!
