Bringing My Wife to My Childhood Home in the Philippines For the First Time
After leaving the Philippines at age 6 to move to Canada, I am finally going back to my childhood home, and this time I am bringing my Canadian wife with me! I lived in Bacolod City as a child, and in this video we are arriving bblueack to Bacolod, Philippines, so I can show my wife where I grew up and reunite with my old neighbours and friends. Nicole has always been excited to see where I was born and spent the first years of my life, and I am eager to see what she will think of my childhood home in the Philippines.
In this video, we are traveling from Boracay Island to Bacolod City. The travel day is a long one, we had to take a tricycle, ferry, bus, another ferry, and a taxi to reach Bacolod City. Arriving to Negros Occidental (the Province that Bacolod City is in) immediately felt different. If you've been watching our Philippines series for a while now, you know that I don't speak Tagalog (the main language of the Philippines), but people in Negros Occidental speak Ilongot, one of the many dialects of the Philippines. As soon as we arrived to this new area of the country I was able to understand so much more of the language as this was the dialect I spoke when I was living in the Philippines. Sharing these experiences and my culture with Nicole is my hometown was a really exciting experience, and we are so glad we can share it with you in this video.
This is Nicole''s first time in the Philippines, so to be able to bring her back to my hometown and introduce her to the people there has been really fun. Most people who travel to the Philippines probably wouldn't be stopping in Bacolod City, but for us this city has a lot of significance. It is an interesting place to visit as a foreigner though because there are so few foreigners to this part of the Philippines that she really stands out!!

That would not happen here in the States - the same neighbors from your childhood - still in the same neighborhood after 25 years. Such heart warming experience so unique to the Philippines. I experienced the same when I came home after being away for 20 years.

Great content Mico and Nicole!!! It's great that you made this effort to go back to your original hometown Bacolod! You must have been emotional on the warmth and love extended by your old neighbors even though many many years have gone by..seems you were teary eyed and touched by their gesture. You should be proud of your heritage! People from Bacolod are so warm and malambing you will never feel uneasy with them. Enjoy your last moments in the Philippines!!! What a special video! I remember going back to my home city after 15 years, and the wave of recognition from my childhood memory hit so strongly that i cried. It was also amazing to see the people who knew me when I was a child. It's an amazing way to go down the memory lane :)

Woah, who would have thought Mico. I watched your earlier vlogs when you first arrived in the Philippines and now you are in Bacolod? That is my hometown, born and raised. Wow. Welcome fellow Bacolodnon. Though I eventually stayed in Manila as an adult, we maintained our home in Bacolod. I am now US based though family visits every few years or so.

When I was young I think I only spoke Illongo but honestly I don't really remember haha 😅I hope to learn the language one day!

@@nicoleandmico I hear ya! I'm studying Tagalog now. My parents emigrated to the U.S. in the late 1950's where I was born, raised and educated. Dad's side of the family is Ilocano and Mom's side is from Oas, Albay (Bicol). My Dad's youngest brother emigrated to Canada where my cousins were born (Winnipeg, MB). Looking forward to more of your vlogs! 🙂
we should all reconnect to our cultural heritage, and each country should have a program, like the Philippines to welcome pack expats to reconnect to their culture of the ancestry and for those countries that have political issues with other countries of the world should allow a visits program without prejudice... so much of this planet is so culturally unknown...thanks again for showing parts of our world....have fun and be safe....

i just stumbled to your youtube and i first saw your chicken inasal in manokan country and cansi in sharyns, always watched vlogger featuring phils and bacolod never knew you are from bacolod, the city of smiles and i saw some familiar faces too some are co workers, bacolod is one of the humble city in the phils. one of the safest too and we welcome everyone to come one, hope you enjoy your stay guys

It was so great to be back!
You can fly to Thailand or any country nearby for 24 hours and come back to the Philippines then ask for balikbayan visa at the airport.

I was in Halifax for 2 years working one of the shipyard but sad to say I left due to the weather condition and continue my journey working onboard offshore drilling rig. God bless you both.

Bacolod is known to be a place of the rich, because that area is once known as the no. producer of sugar in the world particularly in the 1920's, it said that the place has more luxury cars than hollywood during its prime, they send their children to american and european schools, while youre there look for the ancestral houses of the old rich, some family, names are still there, the Yulo's, Ledesma, Lacson, Valderama are some of the family names that are from Bacolod. The ruin the you visited is one example.

Mico actually only lived in the Philippines until he was 6. He went back for a 1 month visit at age 16 but that is all 😁
