Have you thought about a solar greenhouse with aquaponics for a section of the garden? A old laptop could run it year round, and and raise fish. If you don't like fish much, you could freeze them and trade for firewood with people in the area who community garden for the winter.

I like the stretches of silence in between the dialogue and the sounds from your everyday living in nature and when you work (very calming actually. I don't even think your vlogs need the background music).I could totally see your journey as a documentary one day. Keep up the hard work. Rooting for you both.

Before my landlord died, he had 5 apple trees, a plum tree, fig tree, a large greenhouse with all the vegetables you can imagine and pear tree. Your garden is wonderful to look at. Right now I'm thinking how awesome fresh apple pie would taste. Heck, I'm making myself hungry watching this! A lot of work went into it but now look at it! Beautiful. Too bad you don't have time because you could sell your dried products and herb mixtures!! I'd pay top dollar.

hello from germany you two. i have been using a combined wind - solar system for 3 years. I can only say that this is an absolutely efficient thing. In the times when the sun is shining it is mostly calm and in the seasons when there is a lot of wind the sun only shines weakly or not at all. the combination of the two systems for electricity production is therefore the perfect way. In any case, I can only recommend installing such a system. and sorry, my english is not the best.

Nicole and Jake suggestion instead of picking up the fire wood and moving all by hand they have or u can make a large open like carrying cart with a half hoop handle , two wheels on the bottom make it like 4 feet high with sides bottom and back but open front, like a two wheeler they use too transport refrigerators or stoves u can stack a bunch and roll a big load at a time. Just use two little oversized inflatable tires. Oops on the loop handle make like a peg handle in the middle of the loop so u can lay the cart back on the ground to stack the wood on the cart.

I would imagine back in time when it was common for people to grow their own food, find a safe source of water, gather wood for heat, and trade excess goods for money or needed supplies, there wasn't much time left in a day to relax. It must have been a very hard life with little time for the activities we take for granted in the lifestyles we live today. It appears that if you're not working towards one thing to provide a food or heat source for the future you're working on a project to expand or increase your ability to provide for next year. From watching your channel I've gained a little insight of how much work it must have taken for early settlers to carve out a new life in the wilderness. What I've come to understand is how much easier life is in modern times as we work our jobs and pay for the things we need and take for granted as we reach out and pick the goods we need to survive from a shelf at a store. But in reality I think we all take for granted the hard work it must have taken to carve a life in the wilderness for our forefathers. Good luck and I hope some time in the near future you're able to find a way to create some time to take a deep breath and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you without thinking about the next project 👍

Watching Jake pick plums and DROP them in the basket and shouting, "DON'T DROP THE FRUIT!!!" , it will bruise! Thus leading to a loss of nutrients, the soft crushed parts will be much more prone to breeding mold and bacteria, especially if you plan to dry it. Just thought might want to know. I can only imagine how good it must smell walking into your yurt, with all those wonderful goodies drying! I love your videos Jake and Nicole.

The mechanical advantage of 4 or 6 pulleys could use a simple rope length into a wood bucking “machine” by lifting a broad, weighted axe head. Lifted above chopping block.. a tie off or a break on another of your pulleys It’s not currently as easy for you both to chip or buck your wood. In that it’s daily duty.. make it easy

Hey! August isn't rainy season up there, is it? I LOVE that music. Incredible. What is it? No! Firewood does not get easier as years go on. You get stronger but you also get older....maybe a draw?? Your purple dye is awesome. You need to have a long piece of canvas maybe 8 ft by 2ft. Make handles on each end with a dowel run thru it. Opening for hand. Can carry much more wood, more easily. Sorry my description is so bad.

Make a trailer or sled or wheelbarrow is a good idea too. We burn wood too. We have a gas-operated splitter my husband built. A 21-year-old son that helps too. We are both over 60 too. It never gets easier. You just need to get and use equipment to make it easier.

It's gonna get old very fast. There's another living off grid in BC family who've got an amazing set up. Clearly more money but good to look at to make life more manageable. Boats with front wind protection and carts to shuffle wood around. Chopping wood might be fun when young but ... it's a process.

Jake, when you stepped over the electric fence while carrying the solar panal, I cringed a little. Glad it was turned off. Nicole, we went to a wood stove hwen we lost power for about a week in the winter. So glad we made the move, and if I'm honest about it, I love cutting and splitting firewood. It will get easier.

Nicole seemed a little somber this time - have no insight as to reason, but something to consider. Maybe a friend could come to visit- something social? I know Jake chops a lot of wood. I keep wondering if there isn’t a more efficient way to get logs closer to the yurt, and use a gasoline powered splitter. You lay the log section on it, pull a handle, and a wedge flies partway into the end of the log, splitting it. This can be done to process a bulk of wood nearer to the storage rack. Need a small flatbed trailer that you can load up with log sections, then winch or drive the trailer to where you want to deliver the wood - this assumes a reasonably clear roadway or space up to the yurt. Throwing logs and ingots is a recipe for torn arm tendons, rotator cuff surgery, or displaced vertebrae and discs. You are strong when young, but can you do this when you are 65+ ? I’m all in for the solar energy methods. A small wind turbine seems good too - an old APU from a plane, swivel-mounted on a pole, might be a good power generation method. Love to you guys! Things have come soooo far. Just don’t forget to stay in touch with people - we are social creatures - women especially - beauty in the plan! ❤️

It looks like you have the solar panels connected in parallel, which means more current is generated. Portable power stations typically have fairly low limits when it comes to input current, so you would likely not get the maximum power input from the panels due to current limiting. One of the BIG advantages of the new Bluetti AC200 is that it can take higher input voltage from solar panels, which you get when they are connected in series instead of in parallel. It's actually a simpler connection too, with fewer parts required. If you connect your 2 275W panels in series, you would likely get better power input and therefore charge up more quickly, as long as both panels are fully in the sun (i.e. no shade on them).
