Bringing Back the Butternut Tree | Kitigan Zibi Nagadjitòdjig Akì

“A butternut tree is a life-giving tree”. Serving as a source of medicine, the butternut tree plays a significant role in the Kitigan Zibi culture. Following a rapid decline in the number of Pagànàkomin trees, members of the Kitigan Zibi community worried about the health of the population. Thankfully, Kitigan Zibi’s Nagadjitòdjig Akì Guardians have stepped in and developed a pilot seedling program to educate the community & encourage recovery of the species.

We found a half-dead Butternut tree at a grocery store for sale - $1. Brought it home, planted it, it lost all remaining branches. My wife, the gardener, said "get rid of it". But I said "Wait...there's is one bud on a branch. Let's see where it goes." Today it is higher than the house. The joy in my wife's face of seeing the nuts on the tree for the first time was priceless. Now we take the nuts and throw them in forest clearings in the hope they spread. And we gave a self-seeded sapling to a Mi'kmaq elder in Cape Breton who runs a community garden.
