It’s a nice sentiment but unlike most of the quotes here I too disagree. I believe the strong should be complex to combat the manipulators. “I could be like you. I could use my intellect to deceive for my own gain. I could use my strong body to intimidate you into submission. I could use the ethos of the human heart to sway you into trust for my eventual beck. But I choose to offer my talents and alluring complexities to benefit my neighbor and work towards he ultimate goal of life. The goal of bliss and fulfillment.” -Some Y. Guy

@@comradecarl8105 What makes you think "combatting the manipulators" is what being strong means? This kind of engagement means the manipulation is already in effect, you're acknowledging its power and the looming danger it presents. Life becomes a constant struggle and you have to be on your watch 24/7. It's a complicated life of a fearful person who is scared of being corrupted. Some might say, a weak person. It's a virtuous life; a morally good life; a healthy life. But that's not the simple strength Tolstoy is talking about. You portray strength as a necessary, conscious response to evil, while this creates evil in the first place by giving it a form. Goodness becomes a mere response, evil is the origin. But a man who helps his neighbor because he simply feels like it; a man who dismisses a dogma because he simply doesn't believe in it and trusts his gut feeling; a man who doesn't use his intellect to deceive for his own gain because he simply doesn't 'want', and what he needs he takes. That is simple strength, that's neither evil nor good.

Or maybe they only have one simple perspective they never question which makes it easy for them to never change paths and forge ahead in their certainty that they're right? I know some people like that, strong will and dumb as a doornail. Kinda contradicts the part about the greatest knowledge is the knowledge that we know nothing for certain or whatever that quote said. Guess it depends on how he's using the word simple. Just saying.

" Leo Tolstoy’s Resurrection. For his whole life, Leo Tolstoy was concerned, immensely concerned with Jesus; hence the title, Resurrection. And Leo Tolstoy has really created a tremendous work of art. It has been a bible to me. I can still see myself when I was young continuously carrying Tolstoy’s Resurrection with me. Even my father became worried. “It is okay to read a book,” he said to me one day, “but why do you go on carrying this book the whole day? You have read it.”I said, “Yes, I have read it, not only once but many times. But I am going to carry it with me.”My whole village knew about it, that I was continuously carrying a certain book called Resurrection. They all thought I was mad - and a madman can do anything. But why was I carrying Resurrection the whole day? - and not only during the day, but during the night too. The book was with me by my bed. I loved it… the way Leo Tolstoy reflects the whole message of Jesus. He succeeds far more than any of the apostles except Thomas - and about that I am going to talk just after Resurrection. The four gospels particularly included in the Bible miss the whole spirit of Jesus. Resurrection is far better. Tolstoy really loved Jesus and love is magic, particularly because when you love someone time disappears. Tolstoy loved Jesus so much that they become contemporaries. The gap is big, two thousand years, but it disappears between Tolstoy and Jesus. It rarely happens, very very rarely, that’s why I used to carry that book in my hand. I no longer carry that book in my hand, but in my heart it is still there. Another book by Leo Tolstoy. One of the greatest in all the languages of the world, War and Peace. Not only the greatest but also the most voluminous… thousands of pages. I don’t know that anybody reads such books except myself. They are so big, so vast, they make you afraid. But Tolstoy’s book has to be vast, it is not his fault. War and Peace is the whole history of human consciousness - the whole history; it cannot be written on a few pages. Yes, it is difficult to read thousands of pages, but if one can, one will be transported to another world. One will know the taste of something classic. Yes, it is a classic. Leo Tolstoy's ANNA KARENINA, a small but immensely beautiful novel. You must wonder why I should include a novel in my list. Just because I am crazy! I like all kinds of things. ANNA KARENINA is one of my most loved books. How many times I have read it I can't remember. I mean the number of times - I remember the book perfectly well, I can relate the whole book.If I was drowning in the ocean and had to choose just one novel out of all the millions of novels in the world, I would choose ANNA KARENINA. It would be beautiful to be with that beautiful book. It has to be read and read again; only then you can feel it, smell it, and taste the flavor. It is no ordinary book.Leo Tolstoy failed as a saint, just as Mahatma Gandhi failed as a saint, but Leo Tolstoy was a great novelist. Mahatma Gandhi succeeded as - and will remain forever - a pinnacle of sincerity. I don't know of any other man in this century who was so sincere. When he wrote to people 'sincerely yours' he was really sincere. When you write 'sincerely yours', you know, and everybody else knows, and the person to whom you are writing also knows, that it is all bullshit. It is very difficult, almost impossible, to really be 'sincerely yours'. That's what makes a person religious - sincerity.Leo Tolstoy wanted to be religious but could not be. He tried hard. I feel great sympathy with his effort, but he was not a religious person. He has to wait at least a few more lives. In a way it is good that he was not a religious man... otherwise we would have missed RESURRECTION, WAR AND PEACE, ANNA KARENINA, and dozens more beautiful, immensely beautiful books."

@@OranjeSchildpad yay! Another fan! I’m actually learning Russian by myself at the moment bc I want to be able to read or listen in the native language! My absolute favorite is the Death of Ivan Iliyich. I read it in college and found it to be outstandingly profound and, though pessimistic, an accurate portrayal of human nature when one person is suffering and what your “value” really is here. I read it again after being diagnosed with cancer a year later and it hit me in a whole new way. I have never related to a fictional character more than Ivan. When he described the pain and loneliness of dying and the neglect and lack of sympathy from even family, I too had a horrid, lonely experience with it, it moved me because I felt understood (22 with cancer is hard to feel understood bc everyone around you with it has 30-40 years that you didn’t get!) I wanted that sympathy he begged for. To be cared for. But it never came and I realized that if I serve no tangible purpose people don’t care and I’m a burden (I know it’s pessimistic! But it helped me to not succumb to the depression and love life the way I feel I should to be happy for me). Read it afterwards after some other events in my life and helped erase any fear of death that lingered with me and to lower my expectations of people to not get hurt. My dad is a huge fan, too, so we discuss it at length! It’s so beautiful to me and real. I joke that people always want to see representation of themselves in things, but it’s superficial. I don’t care about what they look like - can I relate to their experiences? the character I identify the most with is a 50 something year old russian man from the 19th century 😂 but it’s true! That book validates me and makes me feel understood! (So sorry for the long rant - I’m an English teacher and people hate reading so I get super excited if I can talk about it and end up rambling 😅😅) What about you?? Do you have a favorite? Is this your first time reading war and peace? I’m in the middle of rereading Walden by Thoreau and want to reread grapes of wrath next - then crime and punishment and war and peace!! (The Russians are great!) (Ps Thanks for commenting to me and letting me get my excitement for books out 😅haha - your turn!)

@@rubysoho423 That's nice, I am too learning Russian, I'm a still a beginner but my goal is to be able to speak easily when I will travel across Russia and the former USSR satellites. The death of Ivan Ilitch is the second Tolstoï I've read, and I found it very profound. I haven't been through health problems like you have, and I hope you are getting better with it, I wish you the best courage for that! But this book helps to understand the situation of some of my relatives who are in end of their life. And it also shows what I don't want to become as a man somehow. I've also started to read Dostoïevski, but it is a very different approach. I identify myself a little more in Tolstoï litterature. The funny thing is that I have been introduced to Tolstoï undirectly with the movie "Into the wild" and by searching on the character of Mc Candless. Before Tolstoï I read Thoreau's Walden, which I consider to be one of the most mind changing of my readings so far. I am a mechanical engineer, but I sometimes I feel that I am not in my place with what I am doing now. I agree with you, reading helps a lot to go though hard times and take recoil over things. Like we say here in France : "la lecture, c'est la nourriture de l'âme". I wish you all the best ! :)

And I agree - ivan ilyich is a good reminder of how to live life and what to consider important. And yes! Walden has made me reconsider a lot of my life and find much more happiness in simplicity and the beauty of nature. Life changing! Its funny you mention into the wild! I taught that book to my 11th grade students and had great discussions about mccandless and his decisions. It was a fun book to teach and have kids get introspective about. One girl told me she thought of up and leaving sometimes. I told her I did a lot haha. It’s nice to talk to someone about books and philosophies for once! I don’t get to do that much! Ps. France!! Wow! Another place I’d love to (and hope to) go (my favorite painters are French)

When I think of Tolstoy, I think of the character Natasha Rostova in War and Peace. Tolstoy's ideal woman. I might add, my ideal woman in classic fiction. I especially admired her selfless care of Prince Andrei. Some of her decisions are baffling, but her overall character is very alluring. She loves without pretense.

My favorite is people are always trying to change others but seldom do they ever look at themselves. Start looking at yourself change yourself to fit in don't try to change others to fit in this is a truly incredibly genius rule for every single level of interaction you have good or bad think about it even road rage this rule applies to every single human interaction that you will have or I will have in my lifetime so stop and think about yourself and how you are responding or reacting to others reactions or how they are treating you good or bad forget about them focus on you

In Gandhi's autobiography " My Experiments with Truth" he writes while he was in South Africa once he had to travel from Durban to Johannesburg in a train. That night during his travel he carried two books. One of Leo Tolstoy & other of John Ruskin. He read those two books the whole night while travelling in train. Those two books deeply influenced his thoughts so much that , the very night those two authors transformed him from Mohandaas Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi. That's why Gandhiji says powerful thoughts can transform one's individual life and the entire world as well from nothing to everything.
