"Brilliancy" - Old-time Fiddle Jam Session at Jeff and Eileen's
Музыка
The tune "Brilliancy" played at an end of the year fiddle jam session hosted by Jeff and Eileen in Portland, Oregon on December 28th, 2013.
The fiddlers are...in order of playing... Starr McMullen, Tabby Gholi, Cynthia Bartlett Hamm, and Eileen Walter. The back up pickers are Bob Heinith, Andy Emert, Jeff Walter, Ricky Selman, and Jonathan Trawick. Tail wagging by "Latte".
Starr is the 2014 National Senior Fiddle Champion. Tabby is the 2014 Oregon State Champion.

While a lot of domestic pets will run in the opposite direction whenever a fiddle comes out of a case...(and who could blame them?)..."Latte" is a dog who loves fiddling. You will always find her in the middle of any jam session circle.
Love it. Even the dogs tail is keeping time
Nice fiddling, my friends. Love the idea of using the dog as a metronome.

We humans probably do not know ONE PERCENT of what animals in general and especially dogs know. I'll bet he can hear frequencies coming out of those beautiful instruments we WISH we could hear.
Takes some serious talent to do this
If the fiddle players just all picked this up by ear then just wow. Either way impressive.!

Well, @SPEAKout, you tell Biscuit we said "Hey" and that he's welcome to listen and howl along anytime. There is no question that playing the fiddle (or any instrument for that matter) will not only add years to one's life, but will add quality to those years.

Latte's (the dog) seemingly impeccable sense of timing is perhaps attributable to her growing up around fiddlers and fiddle music and the fact she never missed a jam session. On the contrary, she was often smack dab in the middle of it, as seen in this video.
Makes me really want to learn how to play, great job!

Glad you enjoyed it, Annalena. Because this is one of the most popular videos on the Joy of Fiddling channel, I've been hoping to get this same group together again for some more jamming. But trying to coordinate fiddlers and pickers can sometimes be a lot like herding cats. This was a special night to have all these folks in the same place at the same time to play music together. But I'm going to keep trying to make it happen. In the mean time, I hope some of the other fiddle jam session videos on this channel will tide you over.

Thank you, it was a pleasure to listen to it. Espacially Tabi Gholi. She plays so pure. But for sure, the other ones too. One of my favorite country songs are the Gardenia Waltz and the Tennessee Waltz. It would be sooooo great if they could play these songs. They could come up as a band if they are not already. Is there any opportunity to see them playing live? Thank you very much.
@joyoffiddling

Tabitha is a wonderful fiddler. Eileen was her teacher and Starr, Cynthia, Andy, and Jeff were sources of inspiration and support over the years that Tabi was growing up and learning her instrument. While Tabi, Andy, Cynthia, and Jonathan all individually perform shows with various groups from time to time, the folks in this video are not an actual band. Just a group of friends bonded together by their mutual love of this music. For the most part, the only places we play are at fiddle contests and jam sessions like this one. I have said before that I believe some of the finest live music experiences you could hope to have do not always take place on stage...but in living rooms, garages, back yards, camp grounds, and parking lots. I will be sure to pass along your request for Gardenia Waltz and Tennessee Waltz the next time we are together.

Everyone sensational !! The killer run was Tabby at 2:59 right after she played the low notes. So wish I'd grown up around this kind of music instead of on Long island N.Y. where everyone just wanted to get into a garage band and play Led Zeppelin. No dis to Long Island, great place to be a kid in the 50's-60's, just nothing in the way of traditional music.
@joyoffiddling

Nice of you to drop by to comment, Chuck. I'm a firm believer that there's at least a little bit of fiddlin' and pickin' going on just about everywhere, it's just not always easy to find those few souls who devote themselves to this style of music. No one starts playing this music because they think it will make them rich and/or famous. Had there been such a thing as the internet back the 50's-60's I think you might have discovered some kindred spirits in your neck of the Long Island woods. Also, consider, there are countless folks who came to this music later in life and their late blooming did not prevent them from learning to express themselves in a traditional style and forge profound musical bonds of fellowship with other musicians, young and old. In other words...it's never too late.

And thank you for your reply. We do have a Bluegrass festival every August in Copiague (Tanner Park) which I try my best to attend. I play some mandolin and am looking to upgrade to an "F" style, something in the $700 to $1,000 range. Any suggestions? I have my eye on the Eastman MD515. I love the music. It's hard to find any genre these days that isn't Idol/Money driven.
@joyoffiddling

I would not be qualified to offer deep insight or advice into the purchase of specific mandolins or any other instruments for that matter, except to say that playing music is joy...and playing music on an instrument that you love enhances that joy. There are a few things one should not skimp on in life...two of which are good quality shoes and good quality mattresses as so much of our life is spent on our feet or sleeping. Should we skimp on our instruments? Most of us have budgetary restrictions and a high price tag does not automatically mean we'll be playing the instrument of our dreams. I have played VERY expensive fiddles owned by others and there was no question they were fine instruments. But they just weren't for me. I have fiddle and guitar friends who swear by specific models, years, brands, but even that does necessarily guarantee the right fit every time. The fiddle I currently play on I call the "Frankenstein fiddle" because it was created out of the "body parts" of five other broken fiddles by a man who was not a professional luthier. I play it primarily because it has a slender neck which results in less pain in my left hand but it actually has a surprisingly good tone. I get compliments on its' sound often. If I took it to a nice violin shop and tried to sell it, most likely I would be told it was not "worth" anything. But right now it means the world to me. Selecting an instrument is a lot like falling in love with a mate or adopting a dog from the pound. You'll know when you've found "the one" when you hold it in your hands and it speaks to you.
