Bright Red Fortification Agate Hunt & Cut! Rockhounding in South Dakota for Teepee Canyon Agates!
in this one, we head to the Black Hills of South Dakota for a Rockhounding trip! Our adventure begins at Teepee Canyon, one of my favorite sites filled with beautiful fortification agates, calcite crystals, jaspers, and brachiopods! After our hunt, we jump back to the shop and cut some of our finds! This is only the first of 3 awesome videos coming from our Black Hills adventures so make sure you don't miss the next ones!
I am running a booth at the Billings Gem and Mineral Show at the Billings Hotel & Convention Center August 3rd-6th, and am doing a Meet and Greet August 4th from 11:30 a.m.- 12:30! Here is a link to the event page; even if you don't think you can make it in person, selecting "interested" on the event page is a massive help for me that is greatly appreciated! I hope to see all of you there, and Rock on!

I am swimming in the projects at the moment😂 probably gonna be moving to 2 videos a week for awhile because the videos just keep piling up😂
That big fortification one is just phenomenal! When you see something like that, you almost can't believe it's real! Just gorgeous! Congrats on that one! And the littler ones are just beautiful! They are just small versions of the killer one! You can't help but love that then! I wish so bad I could travel to Montana to meet you, but I can't and can't even drive anymore! So that sucks! But I can't wait to see if there is anything left over after the show, so I can at least buy a piece from your Etsy! What an amazing place, teepee canyon is! Thanks Theo!

Its so true, weve found a good handful of really high quality teepees over the 7ish years weve been going to the black hills and it really is an amazing feeling when you spot one that nice; TOTALLY different from anything in Montana😂 and im am super excited to start polishing some of those smaller ones! They will be great little specimens and cabochons! No worries at all to not being able to make ot out here, i completely understand, i am producing a TON of stuff so id be amazed if i dont have a heap of leftovers thatll be going onto etsy😄 thank you so much for watching!
What a fun place. I think it was a tie between you and Alexis. Beautiful rocks. When it's that hot I bring a golfing umbrella (big). It really makes a difference or one you can wear to keep your hands free. I always brought one for our dog. I set it down and it would lay down with no prompting. Stay hydrated. Keep having fun. See you next time with a smile.

We were actually talking about that while we were out in the badlands! Definitely need to start packing some shade with us, it gets crazy hot out in the prairie😅 thank you so much for watching!
Those are so beautiful. That big one you showed at the end looked like it had amethyst in it as well. I could be mistaken though. Can't wait to see them polished.

I think it might hiding under that calcite pocket! Im still debating on if i want to try to pursue exposing them or leave it alone for now😂 very stressed about potentially ruining such a nice one😅 thanks so much for watching!
WOW, finding your own Teepee canyon agates is awesome. I'm so relieved you didn't cut that big one, it is beautiful! And Alexis' is superb. TFS

Totally agree! Those teepee canyons are something else😄 gotta love those vibrant colors! Thanks so much for watching!
Nice vid. I live out here in the Black Hills and hunt Tepee a lot. There are really 4 ways to get these agate nodules. I will list easiest to most difficult. 1). Find any hillside within the Teepee area, this covers many miles and just walk on the slopes of the hillsides (away from the giant limestone pieces) looking for just agate pieces that have come to the surface. This is easy, usually you will find many fragments, occasionally a whole nodule. 2). Find the big piles of limestone rocks, and just do what you were doing in your video, flipping them over. Realize though that most of these piles are discard piles of just limestone that previous agate hunters removed to get to the nodules that are at a certain level in the wall of rock. Yes, people do discard small stuff they don’t want and you can find these by just flipping limestone over. 3). Find a hillside and on the upper 1/3 of that hill, look for agate chips. Then dig a 1 foot by 1 foot hole in the dirt with your shovel looking for golf ball to tennis ball sized FULLY INTACT nodules, these are not within limestone. The top of the hills were the bottom of the ocean at one time and these agate nodules were deposited in the mud bottom. If nothing found, move up or down the hill every few feet digging another hole (fill the dirt in the previous dug hole) until you find these agate nodules. Once you find them, you basically just dig horizontally now at the same level as that level you found your first nodules. These nodules will all be intact and you need a saw to cut open, or you can break with a hammer (not recommended, as can shatter into many pieces). These smaller nodules often have much better pattern than the big ones. 4). The largest agate nodules are found by hard rock mining where you find a fresh wall of rock and use a sledge hammer, pry-bars, and rock chisels to break the pieces of limestone off and then you find the layers from top to bottom of crystal, jasper, then agate nodules. The nodules are stuck in the limestone and it takes back breaking work to break many hundreds of pounds of limestone out of the way to expose the layer of agate nodules. These nodules are what most serious hunters go after as they will usually be intact, vary in size from golf ball up to football size, and once the layer of nodules is found, hunters just stay at that horizontal level to get more. Good luck and have fun.
Those are amazing teepee canyon agates you scored big on those

I would like to be a fly on the wall when you walk up to the UPS store clerk or the post office and tell the person at the counter that you are mailing rocks. It's rather humorous to picture that and imagine what they must be thinking! Beautiful stones. Thanks for cutting and showing.

I wonder if there is any relation between these and Union Road Agates???
If you dont mind me asking where you go, because I've gone out there and haven't been able to find anything!

One of the spots we go to is about 15 miles outside of Custer, weve found that a lot of the people that live out there have no interest in anything short of that big one we found so you can find a TON of material by just flipping over everything, there is SO much amazing material that gets discarded and tossed down the hill so you dont even need to do any splitting sometimes, just flip as many rocks as you can in the piles👍
Theo, Have you ever hunted for Dryhead Agate? I've heard differing reports about whether it is found on the Montana or Wyoming side of the state line. Thankfully I inherited a boxfull so I've never had to make the long drive from Denver. You're a lot closer!
Beautiful finds! Please tell me Alexis carries an epi- pen and Benadryl…I have 2 grown children that have to carry them.

We definitely always have the Benadryl on standby😅 shes not like crazy allergic, like not life threateningly allergic, but shes allergic enough that its a really bad day if she gets stung😅 so we always give the bees their space when we can

Yeahh we usually dont bring them with to south dakota, long drive so theyre stuck in the car for 6 hours, its crazy hot out in the badlands and we do a ton of hiking so they can easily get too hot, we do a bunch of stuff that they cant join us for like going out to dinner and visiting shops and i dont like keeping them in the car, so its not really a place theyd have fun to come with this time of year. They come with everywhere else though!

@TheoKellison yea I get what your saying. I wouldn't want them to get sick or over heated or die on you. Anyway thanks for the info I appreciate that.
Rock to crystal ratio problems are the saddest.
Is that a giant fish fossil on that slab? Like 2-3 feet long? 2:09

Is Teepee Canyon considered public land?
@eyeguyeyeguy1
Ай бұрын
Yes it is. I live out here, there are a few areas that people have claims on, and those are clearly marked. Basically, any area within the USFS that is not private property is open to rock hunting out here. Only hand tools allowed.
I don't know if this is me, but when you put the rocks right up to the camera before they focus sort of gives me a headache. I do understand it takes a minute or two for the camera to focus. Maybe you can figure out how Michigan Rocks does it, or ask him what he thinks. I love your site. I found you through Michigan Rocks. Thank you for understanding, I hope this wasn't too critical. I am viewing this on my phone, and that could be the problem.
