Brief Political History of Colombia

This video explores the basics of Colombian history and politics to explain why violence has been permanent feature of Colombian politics since the middle of the 19th century despite having regular and peaceful transfers of power. It also looks into how this led to the development of drug cartels and paramilitaries. It ends with the Presidency of Ivan Duque.

I'm Colombian, and this video taught me more about Colombia's history that Colombia's education system ever taught me.

I'm both happy and sorry to hear that, given what it says about the Colombian school system. But I very much appreciate the kind words. Que viva Colombia!

Great video. Just one quick correction. The period between 1810 and 1819 is known as “la patria boba” not “ la España boba”

As an america born to colombian parents, I have been wanting to embrace my heritage and learn my culture and this video has helped me learn immensely. What is the film that you got the footage from when discussing Jorge Gaitan?

This was kinda hard to understand considering I'm a highschooler lmao, but nonetheless I extremely appreciate this, came from colombia to the usa 7 years ago and was too young to be taught anything, this helps clear out a ton

Here’s an even simpler summary. Colombia is one of the first places to gain independence from the Spanish, but extreme political divisions lead to it breaking apart and later to constant civil war. Violence metastasizes over time and leads to guerrillas, narcos and paramilitaries. This means that the government is simultaneously too strong (as it can commit abuses) and too weak (as it does not have the monopoly of violence).

It is 200 hundred years of history neatly summarized in 20 minutes. Understandably with the ammount of information and names given, It can be hard to follow at some points. I had to go back myself a few seconds now and then because I was not giving 100% attention to the screen, but I found the video excelent. By far the best one I found about the general history of Colombia. It would great to watch a version of this video from Colombia's history (or gran granada's) from the XVI century up to the independence period

Also, before I saw the reöease date of the video, and as you were getting closer to the present day, I was wondering what would you say about the new president, and his past with M19. It is not a trap question by the way, I have no particular political positipn in that regard. I just feel disappointment with the politics of my country in general, and therefore is hard for me to put the effort to stay informed enough to have an opinion about the currently president. I wish It was as easy as reallying on news, but reliable unbiased sources are hard to come by in that political spectrum
