Hey Mike, Loving the new features of the app! Quick question for the next time you're speaking with the app developer. Can you ask what the image dimensions are for the color picker section of the app? I know you can choose your own image for a custom color picker (as you have done). While this works with any size image, as a graphic designer, the stretched images aren't doing it for me and I'd like to create some custom color picker images that fit perfectly in the space available. If you can get the image size, I'd be happy to make some different color picker images and make them available to whoever wants them. They may not ever be perfect because the resolution can change with different screen sizes on the iPad, but I can make some stuff that will look better and be more functional. Thanks!

Hi Mike, I've been working with the Link for a few days. I'm coming from larger consoles and having some issues figuring out how to do some things. Wonder if you might be able to help. Programming in general so far is kind of a pain, I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong or just missing something. When I select my fixtures for programming, I can't find an easy way to just turn them on so that I can start programming. If I'm selecting two different moving heads, one LED wash and one spot, and want to position them, I find that I have to actually select each of them individually just to get output (dimmer+shutter on spot, RGB on LED), and then I have to go back and select them together to put them into position. I'm used to just selecting the fixtures "at full" on a normal console and then being able to position them together. But since they don't have matching attributes, I'm not able to do that on the Link controller/Airstream app. Am I missing something, or is there really not an easier way to do this that makes more sense? I understand that the software is probably meant more for DJs so it wouldn't have the features of a full size console, but there are other aspects of the software that work so much like a standard lighting console that I'm surprised there isn't a better way to do this when programming. Any help you can provide would be really appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for reaching out. So I too found myself annoyed with that aspect of the console/app. Here is a quick way to get around that. Are you familiar with how to create custom encoder wheel pallets? Basically, when in the "channels" section after selecting all your movers you want to look towards the right portion of the screen. if you tap on the channel name in 1 of the 4 encoder boxes you can rename the attribute of what the corresponding encoder wheel controls. So I created a set of 4 attributes the encoders control to somewhat solve our problem. Encoder 1 = dimmer, encoder 2 = shutter, encoder 3 = zoom, encoder 4 = white. In doing this I could select any number of spots or RGBW washes and then simply use the encoders to bring the dimmer, and shutter to full which would make the spots visible and then also bring up the white so that my RGBW washes would bring up the white channel thus making all the lights of various types "on". Now, that is not nearly as quick as having a button labeled "full" but if you try it you'll find its a pretty quick get-around. Hope that helps. And do be honest, this console/app was really not designed for DJs as they are not likely to want to fiddle with anything other than pushing a button during an event. This console was designed with churches, small venues, and even mild touring bands in mind. We were getting calls every day for users who wanted something more simple than MyDMX3, but not as complicated to create and save scenes as the DMX Operator controllers. And then there are those with tighter budgets who want a software solution along with a physical controller as well. So this was truly designed to try and satisfy all of those needs and keeping it under $1000. We feel that those with the needs of a full console and higher budgets would buy from Elation's Onyx controllers. I work closely with Ken the developer and we are working on lots of new updates that get released through the app. For instance, an update few know about is the ability to set a "home" p/t position for your movers so that when they are not receiving any position commands they remain in the home position based on the parameters you've set in the profile for that fixture. So your floor package lights could point out and a bit up towards the audience and your down stage lights could point down and out, while your up stage lights point down and in, I will see if there is a way we can create a "FULL" shortcut somehow. Since we only have so many buttons that already have a purposes, it might be something like a hot key deal where if you press 2 buttons at the same time for 3 seconds the dimmer, shutter, and RGB channels go to 255. Let me know your thoughts

@@riverrat7797 Hi Mike, Thanks so much for the reply! I actually really like the idea of creating an encoder wheel pallet for fixture outputs from a single screen! That's a pretty good work around that I had not thought of. I've been using custom encoder pallets to match my fixture features, but wasn't using them for dimmer/shutter and LED. So when you create and save a new encoder pallet, is it saved to the fixture profiles or saved in the software? If I create a pallet like that, while it be available on all fixtures? Something I've been wondering about how the encoder wheels work, are they just matching DMX attributes with the text label of that attribute in the profile? I've noticed that if I have an attribute for something like "Gobo Wheel 2" that I have to actually rename the encoder wheel to match the fixture attribute in order for it to work. I just want to make sure I'm understanding that properly as it will affect how I name my channel attributes when creating fixture profiles in the future. It’s good to hear that the console was designed and is being pushed for small venues and churches. There is a lot of potential there, and I was actually really impressed to see the software handling certain things the same way much larger consoles do (such as setting chase order based on the order of fixture selection), as well as the way it handles null values vs. “0” value. Maybe these features have been part of myDMX software for a while, I’ve just always been a person who needs a control surface as 90% of my shows are busking shows and I can’t work a computer on the fly like that. I actually owned a MIDICon for a while when they were first released, but I’m just not a fan of having to have a full laptop setup in order to run shows. The iPad is a much better way to go, which I why I jumped at the Link controller as soon as I saw the price point. It’s really awesome to hear you’re working closely with the developer of the app. I’m sure it wasn’t easy to adapt an existing app platform to work with a physical controller, but I’m really impressed with it so far. Knowing that the software is still actively being developed is really exciting! While there are some rough edges here and there with the software, knowing it’s always improving is a huge factor when committing to a new lighting controller. My needs aren’t likely to match up with the intended customer base for the controller, but personally, I’d love to see a more extended version of the app that gives you a better programming workflow. A “Programing” tab with some basic actions that make programming shows faster and easier would be just amazing for me. Hell, I’d pay another $1k for a physical programming wing to go along with the controller! (getting a bit ahead of myself there 😛 ) I’ve actually already started using the p/t home feature inside the fixture profiles. I was really happy to see this feature. I’m so used to having a ‘Home” position for my movers that I went in a set them all in the typical home position I’m used to from other consoles (basically set them to the middle of pan and tilt pointing straight down (or up for ground based). Having a hot key for the “at Full” function would be amazing! That would make things so much easier. I don’t even mind having to use the iPad for a function like this, if there isn’t a physical button available on the console. I like to use only the console while running shows, but I’m totally okay with using the iPad interface for programming and setting things up. Can’t wait to see whats in store for future updates to the software! Thanks so much for responding with all this info, I really appreciate it and it’s great to know someone cares enough about the product to reach out to users for things like this. Can’t thank you enough!

@@slaction To answer your first question, the encoder pallets are saved within the software/app. Side note, make sure to archive your shows after any major saves. To answer your second question the answer is yes...Those encoder wheels will only effect channels with the exact same name. So If I were you, I might make channel name adjustments within the profile to make things more unison such as "Gobo 2", "color 2" for fixtures with multiple color wheels, etc. And on your third point I agree...Although coding on the iPad is not the same as coding on a PC or a Mac, so if there seems to be limitations at times, that's because Ken has to always keep in mind out many layers of code are stacking at any given point to ensure that the processing limitations...even on an iPad Pro, dont cause latency. On your fourth point, Its pretty nice on my end that Ken takes my input and tries to find a way to make it work. Ken has mild lighting background and a very wide coding background where as I have no coding and 15 years of lighting. Its a challenge on my end to make sure that when asking for new features, etc that I am not asking for a personal favor, and that I am actually asking for something that makes controlling easier for the programmers as a whole. PS..We're working on an easy fixture P/T fan tool right now. On your 5th point... I doubt that will happen mainly because Ive learned in conversations with Ken that sometimes fixing/adding a feature actually breaks/creates bugs in existing features...So we have to dance the line. This, like most other software controllers will be ever evolving. I will bring up the "AT FULL" virtual button idea to Ken and see if that will work. I will also likely post more short little raw iPhone videos like this one explaining new features and their uses in the future. This video was originally made to give a brief overview of the console to our dealer network that I am not currently(as of today's date) allowed to visit. In short, while playing around with this controller in my home office I am finding that I have to take a slightly different course in work flow than what I too am used to. And when I really wrap my head around that, and knowing how the workflow of this particular console works.. I find ways to create scenes and place them on various pages, etc to work for me. Most of my programming prior to ADJ was busking at local live venues where I didn't know the band. I also spent some time volunteering at a local church that didn't have funds available to pay a "lighting guy" so all I got was a list of songs and suggest color schemes from the worship leader and I had to just make it work. So knowing that, along with how this controller works, I feel its pretty darn good... especially for what the user gets for their money.

@@riverrat7797 Sounds great Mike! I totally understand dealing with the coding aspect and introducing bugs by adding new features. I've worked a bit in coding in the past and even done a couple of iOS apps, so I know it's not an easy task, especially when working with hardware on top of it all. The "AT FULL" feature would be awesome and really speed up the programming workflow. I also think features like this will really cut down down the learning curve for anyone that's used consoles in the past, by making things more universal and familiar to users. And I'd love to see more videos in the future! Every little bit helps. As I said before, really great to hear the software will be evolving over time. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes down the line! Sounds like you an I have a somewhat similar background, though I haven't been in the game as long. I ran lights for a small(ish) local venue, about 1200 seats. Most of our acts were older stars from the 80's-90's. Pretty much none of them traveled with an LD, so I learned fast how important busking is for shows like that. That was a few years ago, I don't do lighting full time right now, just work with local acts and small venues as a side gig. I've done freelance work for larger shows and venues as well, but I live in a small area, so those jobs require a lot of travel, which is harder as you get older and have a family. I'm really looking forward to diving into the console and app all the way and figuring things out. I've been really impressed so far, and as you said, I think getting used to the workflow will be a big factor in getting the most out of the console. I've got my first gig at a small bar this coming weekend. It will be the first official show I run on the Link controller! It's all busking soI'm really looking forward to seeing how the console works out for me. Let me know if you or the developer ever needs someone to beta test new versions of the software in the future. I'd love to help out any way I can. Thanks again for your replies. I look forward to future videos.

Hey Mike, Another quick question for you. Are the 32 playback buttons just inactive while in Submaster view? I was really hoping that I could have Submaster view active and use the faders to fade in and out of looks, while also being able to bump other scenes with strobes or chases using the scene buttons. But I'm finding that while in Submaster view, you can only access the 8 faders at a time and the scene buttons don't do anything. Is there a reason for this on the backend? It just seems like it makes so much sense to allow access to the scene buttons while also giving you fader control over the 8 active faders. I really need to be able to bump other scenes, but I can't because there isn't enough faders to have them active at once. Not to mention I'd personally just prefer to bump some scenes and fade others. I might just be doing something wrong, but I would appreciate any insight you can give. Thanks!

Right now Ive asked Ken to work on the "AT FULL" solution so I know he's working on that as well as coming up with a way to create fixture groups to make fixtures selection easier. So I have to be careful when piling on too many requests before letting him figure out how to implement the requests already in place. I will bring it up though. I see the value in what you're asking as this is how I would prefer to operate when busking as well. Traditionally I would save the intensities of various fixture groups on faders 1-4, I would then save various moving P/T looks on faders 5-6... Thus allowing my scenes buttons to be triggering colors, gobos, and specials such as prisms and frost filters or zooming. Currently this is part of what I was mentioning earlier about having sorta force yourself to operate in a way that is different that what you are used to. For me, when I save looks I try to think of each page( both for scenes and subs) as a group... for instance I will purposely save dimming channels, etc as scenes 1-8 so that when Im on either scene or subs the first 8 faders or top row of scenes all align... I then skip down to scenes 17-24 and start saving colors, gobos, and specials from scene 17 on. this creates a visual seperation for me that makes sense. yes there will be some back and forth between SUBS and scenes screens but its actually not bad when you force yourself to work this way.

@@riverrat7797 Hi Mike, Sorry about coming off pushy on the requests. My first thought was not a request of a change, but that I was doing something wrong or not using the console properly. I fully expect that it's going to take me a while to get used to using the console/software, and I know that physical buttons can share functionality based on the tab you're working under. If the button bank was being used for something else while on the Subs view, I wouldn't have even brought it up, but when it goes unused at a time when I think most people would expect to be able to access it just feels like the wrong decision. I'm not saying based on personal preference, but on what I think would be expected by end users of any lighting controllers. I was more curious if there was a reason that the bank wasn’t active with the Subs view. I get your point on using the Subs with spacing between them so it's easier to know which subs control intensity vs which control colors, gobos and things like that. I'll try to make due with that. I'm just so used to having flash/bump looks programmed and accessible during shows that it's hard to not have those within reach at all times. Something like audience blinders, strobes or even haze control is something that's really hard to be able to plan for in a show that you don't know. I really do appreciate that you're sending input to the developer.

@@slaction Oh I didn't feel you were being pushy at all. I was just letting you know that all of your concerns will be taken into consideration but I also wanted you to know this takes time and since Ken, unlike most other control developer, is working alone right now, I just have to be careful when asking for too much at one time. Side note, we have given users an "AT FULL" soft button on the Fixtures page of the app. It will bring the dimmer, dimmer fine, shutter, and RGBW values to full on the selected fixtures when pressed. Im beta testing it this weekend but so far its working exactly as you and I would have wanted. Great idea! Question to your question. Since the iPad app only shows one page(window) at a time... meaning it can be on scenes, fixtures, subs, or shows only one page at a time, do you feel that a user busking in SUBS mode be ok with being able to use the matrix at the same time even though they would not be able to see the button names visually on the app since their in subs mode?

  • @slaction

@@riverrat7797 Really awesome to hear about the AT FULL feature being tested. So awesome that you were able to get this into the software. I'm sure the developer has a lot on his plate, so I really appreciate your input and the work he's doing. I think it's really making the LINK controller and software a better product! As for your question, I think the best way to accomplish this would be the most straight forward. The scene buttons should work just as they currently do in the Scenes view. You would not be able to see the button images or names, but I don't think that's a problem to be honest. Most lighting controllers prior to the last few years didn't really have a way to see a button name or any kind of image anyway. The advantage of being able to access the scene buttons would in my opinion, far outweigh the lack of being able to see the buttons on-screen. So I think this would be totally acceptable. The Subs view could still show 8 active faders and still allow for scrolling sideways to access more subs just as it does now, the scene bank would just give users direct access for bump/flashing of scenes they want to use without faders. I don't think this has to be a major, documented feature either. The people who try it will find that it works and be even happier, while the people who want to use only Subs to run shows could do so exactly as they currently do and never notice a change. Buskers like you and I would just be given access to faders and scene buttons at the same time and that would make the console a lot more powerful and flexible. Can't wait to see more updates! Thanks again Mike!

Ken is working on one other little issue with dimming right now but when he's done with that ill bring up the idea of being able to use subs and scenes at the same time. Just know that from what I know about the back end processing and work flow of how this app works, Im assuming that if we can make subs and scenes work together that the same time you will be limited to the 8 faders and the 32 scenes on a single page(pages 1-24)

I recently purchased an adj link console and when I turn it on for the first time, whether with an Apple tablet connected or not, the writing "U8" appears on the display which I am told is the software version. Now I think I should see "01" and have the ability to interact with the Airstream Pro app, that is, I press the buttons on the console and the app receives the commands and changes, which is not happening.
