Agreed, I can't even touch my horses muzzle, namely chin, without him freaking out.

This is how I learned to do it. Keeps the bridle still and helps you guide the bit, while allowing some gentle control over the horse's head.

Good tip with the thumb through the ring to guide.

That’s exactly how I was shown! It may not work 100% of the time without some resistance, but if you follow this example, your tacking experience will be a WHOLE lot smoother!!!

this was really helpful!! i tend to get out with horses that like to throw their head up with the bridle, and i’m quite short so i struggle to reach.

@Scott Purdum my cheeky mare has started throwing her head up high when I go to bridle her. I've had to give up twice out of 20 times or so. My more experienced friend can bridle her in a flash with no problems. Makes me feel hopeless. I know the position where to stand and how to stick you thumb in to open the mouth but I can't get that far. The min I lift the bridle to my horse, up her head goes. Should I get a mounting block or such and just get higher up? A little piece of licorice (her favorite treat) sometimes helps as does a fruit roll up on her bit but it would be so nice to not have to use them too. My previous horses were easy to bridle and that was using double bits for showing! Now, I can't get a eggbutt snaffle in my horses moosh! 🤨 not nice planning a ride not knowing if I can make it happen. Can't ride her in a halter as she's too unpredictable.

Whoever had my horse before taught him this (head up) and it’s almost impossible to but him up now. I’ve been working with him but even with my thumb.... he won’t open. Drives me crazy.

I have always did it this way with my last, my young mare now, nope she headbutts me. I have to put my thumbs in my bit,(I use the same one as u, or a tear drop snaffle) my pointers I use to open her mouth, she fights me. I get it in and we ride no problem. No teeth issues or health issues. Just a stubborn female

@Scott Purdum, quick question. Do you have much experience keeping mares and geldings together? My mare is behaving in a sexual manner toward the gelding in my paddock. Do you have any advice as it's upsetting to watch not to mention 'messy' when she gushes! I don't think it's normal. And I have my suspicions that the male horse is a rig. Would that explain my mare's 'showing' herself to him and constantly gushing? It also gets scary and dangerous to be around the 2 horses when this shit goes on (which is most days) 😟 they've been together for 3 weeks now and it hasn't settled down.

The mares in heat. Mares don’t act sexual when they aren’t in heat. And a lot of female animals will act sexual to male ones even if they’ve been neutered. Some geldings will get kinda get off on seeing a female horse in heat, but maybe check with a vet just to make sure he was neutered correctly anyway. But even then it’s still slightly normal for a gelding to sometimes be affected by a mare. But she doesn’t know this. Most female animals in heat still react to neutered males and not know. So when your mare is in heat I recommend keeping her away from geldings and stallions. But keeping a horse completely isolated is a bad idea. I would get her another mare as a companion just for safety and for her happiness as well.

@@johannaappleforest7482 Thanks for helpful reply. I've just bought a bigger property so I'll be buying a companion mare for my mare when we move as I can tell she's lonely. Your message was educational. Thanks again for taking the time to explain this about neutered animals.

My question is in 2023 why are people still using bridles for a horse? It looks? So. Uncomfortable? No scratch. That? It looks painful? Wow wowhy why did you do that
