Bridger Dogless #2 vs MB 550's

I spend some real time talking about two of the very best traps on the market right now and compare them to a few of our 'go to' traps that most of us already own or have used in the past. These traps are time tested by many trappers, field proven for quality, and you really can't make a bad decision when choosing which to go with. That being said, I try to cover some of the details and questions that could only be gotten by ordering one of each that I was interested in and getting some 'hands on' time. Hope it helps!

    MB550 pan tension is adjusted by bending the dog at different angles in a vise so they are adjustable but most come at 2.5#'s

    So I've heard ha ha! I didn't know that when I recorded this video. The 2 1/2 lbs of pan tension is perfect for what I trap and that trap is great! That adjustment is simple enough that I wouldn't even call that a 'modification'. Just a well made American trap that will last a long time. I'll be answering for my mistake for years I bet ha ha :) Thanks for commenting Herbert!

    That's kind, thank you! My daddy believes that any money spent on a trap other than a duke is money WASTED. BUT, when I showed him the Bridger DOGLESS he just about did a cartwheel ha ha! He liked it so much I decided to just leave it with him. I may have converted a 30+ year veteran of Duke brand traps! You don't know my 'ol man but that falls just short of a biblical miracle! These are some great traps and you can't go wrong with either. Keep digging for info but I can promise, after 30+ years we will both still be learning. Stop back often brother!

    As others have stated you did a great job staying on topic. I use Bridgers and MBs and am looking at the dogless option for the bridgers which you covered in detail...so thanks. Here is a question for you. You said you didn't like the rubber jawed MB550s...could you explain why?

  • @PennsyltuckyTrapper

    @PennsyltuckyTrapper

    Thanks Run. I don't believe I said anything about padded jaws in the video but that is a good point. I spoke about having an offset jaw and that it may reduce paw damage but I'm not so sure about that anymore. An offset jaw allows the trap to close a little further, which allows the lever to close further, which makes for a more secure hold on your catch. If you've ever found your trap discharged with a spring popped out you understand why an offset fills a need (not to mention a little bead weld or bend at the end of the jaws). Nothing takes the place of a quality trap though. In short, offsetting your jaws is NOT the solution to paw damage. Padded jaws are designed to fill that need. For me, I am not worried about paw damage. But, if you are concerned with paw damage a padded jaw is a good thing to consider. I would suggest to first try an offset jaw with a modified spring of lower tension. I may even test a trap after removing one of the two springs. I STRESS testing a single spring trap before taking it into the field though! Filing down the edges of the jaw where it will contact the paw will reduce damage as well. If you get padded jaws make sure the pads are secure each time you make a set as they can wear out. At this point you may be stepping into the 'trap modification' zone. So, I apologize if I gave the impression that I oppose padded jaws. I do not. They are just another option for us to consider. I hope you figure it out.

    Thanks for the reply. My mistake on the padded jaw comment that was another video I saw from another channel. I actually strictly use offsets on my Bridger 2s and 3s in addition to my MB450s and 550s. I have rubber padded all my Bridgers for two reasons. First my targets are strictly coyotes. I have adjusted my pan tension but on occasions I have caught non-targets. I have noticed paw damage and lower leg damage due to the edges of the Bridgers. The MB550..no issues on that end. When I put the rubber pad kits on the Bridgers it was night and day as far as the paw damage. It was reduced significantly. Second reason is when property owners are hesitant about trapping I show them padded traps and It lessons their concerns and I get a green light compared to when I would show them MB550 for example. Public perception outside the trapping circle is a real challenge. Thanks again for the video..happy trapping.

    Hey Ron, I could talk trapping all day. I'm happy to. I love it. Besides, I'm glad you brought this up, it's a good point. It may be that the MB550's have a larger area where the jaw contacts the leg. Laminating the jaws of your Bridgers should give you a similar result. Padding still sounds like the be best option though. As you said, it's night and day. Padded jaws meet that need. If I may, as far as showing the property owners the padded jaws... I've been tossing around the idea of doing a video on talking to land owners for permission and I will make sure to include a part about showing them your equipment. I've found that showing them your equipment actually does damage. I'd encourage you to keep your gear tucked away. I used to show my gear, but I don't any more and there is a reason for that. Average Joe has a negative emotional reaction to traps. I've made a living out of reading body language and if you pay attention to the owner as you show them the trap there are red flags everywhere. Negative emotional responses end relationships FAST. If you are getting push back of any kind (hesitation as you said) showing them the steel isn't what I would suggest. I'll cover that more in the video I do. Thank you for getting me thinking about that. I think it's an important topic that could help a lot of folks out. The single best argument for padded traps IMO, is with regard to INCIDENTAL CATCHES (as in 'the family pet'). If you catch their dog and damage the leg it gets ugly fast. Even if they were at fault. I guess the answer is padded, laminated, offset, single spring traps that are sprinkled with pixie dust! Just kidding. There really is NO perfect solution. You can be dead right and get kicked out just as if you were dead wrong. You can avoid all of that if you do this SINGLE most important thing... I'll talk about that more in the video :)

    Pennsyltucky Trapper From my experience I show land owners my equipment "if" they are uninformed and unsure about trapping. I hunt and trap coyotes and by far trapping is more more effective at reducing the numbers. When I show them a trap..and actually pop the trap itself with my own hand in it and they see my fingers are not broken..bruised....etc...it debunks a lot of things they have heard. Every single time I have done this I have owners thanking me for showing them this. Next thing I know I have permission.

    Thank you for making this video, but I use the Bridgers dogless and I would not recommend filing any part of them, as they actually have a night latch click setting as well. From that point you can reset your pan at what ever height you need. Also they come with a bolt so you can adjust how many pounds pressure tension you want the pan set to.

    I watched your striper fishing video. Nice job! As far as the filing, the ONLY reason I would recommend it is to reduce travel. I would NOT recommend reworking the night latch though. It's a common method with them and it works like a charm. Effectively making it activate as soon as enough weight is put on the pan. You don't have to of course. They are great right out of the box. I do like that you can adjust the pan tension as well. I looked for some trapping content on your channel. Are you trapping at all?

I have been filming every day and have lots of content to make a DVD for Trappers by trappers, of the North East. Next season I will be also targeting the Adirondacks Mountains as well as the Catskill Mountains where I am currently filming, but no I have not released any trapping footage on my channel just yet. Gonzo, you are in good company when you trap with a Bridger trap! I love them. I'm sure the MB's will exceed your expectations and I can't wait to see a wolf in one of them. If my springs get worn out I will change the springs but I don't weld (that's what I would consider a 'modification'). I believe that even a new trapper could change springs so I'd be ok with it too. The internet has made the world so small and there is both good and bad that goes along with that. Making new friends in places I've never been is a big POSITIVE! Any idea what happened in this video; what animals did I miss with them? I've been re-watching them and what I think happened keeps changing. Thanks Gonzo!

    They are ready to go just as they come. You should soak them in boiling water so the oil comes off of them. That way they don't have an oily odor. After that you're in business. Bridger makes a first class trap. You could add a swivel and a shock spring, night latch it, or laminate the jaws but I recommend that you GO TRAPPING!!! Ha ha, good luck young man.

    I trapped with the original Montgomery #s 3 and 4 dogless traps years ago and the were wonderful! Briger's pan set-up id different on their dogless traps but, they look EXACTLY like the old Montgomery's other than the pan. As far as modifications, those chains are WAY to short for Wyoming Coyotes and Cats! Even in the cold, rocky ground with a 4 foot stake I've had Coyotes pump the stakes out of the ground and leave costing me trap, fur and money! You may never have that problem but, I will NEVER again set a trap for Coyote or Bobcat without adding another swivel or two and AT LEAST 3 more feet of chain. Four feet is even better! I once caught a Red Wolf on a four foot chain and he had pumped the stake out of the ground a foot when I got there. He was 7 feet from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail so, he was a big fella! Good trapping. I enjoy your vids!

    Just to help with the pan tension question. The MB is adjustable. to adjust the tension you bend the dog one way or the other. Bend it up for tighter tension and down for less pan tension.

    I live in minnesota. I use Bridger #2 dogless awsum trap I have caught 3 wolves with them last season one was caught by toe. my traps are short chained with a spring making short chain even shorter and wolves or coyotes can't get out the spring keeps them from getting a gud tug. 15 inch Berkshire stake holds em tight

    Great video have thought about the Bridger 2 dogless but still love my 550's. Pan tension is adjustable on mb's by bending the dog. 450's seem great out of box but 550's maybe touch too stiff for me.

    +Pennsyltucky Trapper take 2 pliers and bend dog itself down its really strong metal but it doesn't take much of bend. If you would go on Minnesota trap line web sight it shows how to bend them and it's also in there catalog Also when u bend them it don't change the pan height unless you bend them too much

    Do you dye and wax your traps?

  • @PennsyltuckyTrapper

    @PennsyltuckyTrapper

    7 жыл бұрын

    Yes. I believe it is important to protect the metal (dye them) and to keep them as scent free as possible (wax them). The wax makes them fire smoother as well as water proofs them to some degree. The dye usually makes them darker in color as well (black in my case) which makes them easier to hide when in the water or under a thin layer of dirt. Any advantage helps. Check back because I will be dipping my traps next week and I'll put together a video on how I do it. It's simple, I'm sure you'll be able to do it right on your first try.

    You are right. I only learned about adjusting the MB's after the recording. They adjust GREAT too. I haven't caught a skunk, cat, or opossum even 1 time this year and I believe it is because I have the pan adjusted correctly on my MB's. I'm not opposed to buying foreign products but I do look for American made first. I just think it's worth asking for USA made before going with something else. Thanks so much for helping to make that clear for everyone.

    the best reason for a dogless as opposed to a dog is it will fire when a dog is frozen. I run Bridger #3 Dogless and MB 550s. Pan tension ..lol I have caught lots of squirrel and rabbits. So pan tension is a joke. When a squirrel or rabbit jumps on the pan it will fire. It doesn't matter the weight, it is the pressure from then jump which sets it off. Plus how much tension you talking. remember the cat weights about 10 lbs.

    @@PennsyltuckyTrapper wow well here's my take. If they wanted me they could have me no problem I'm hunting alone or scouting and in the middle of nowhere. But there's plenty of food...elk deer available. One strange thing is the unit I hunt in Colorado has a low success rate and overall not tons of elk. This year it went from over the counter to a draw unit. They are blaming low numbers and high hunter pressure. All while they introduce the wolf back into Colorado.
