The writing, the acting, the art direction, the casting, the score... Everything absolutely perfect. Thank you for posting. All copies of that travesty of a film they did a few years ago should be burnt!

One of the best series. Amazing to watch it 30 years on, a different person from the student I then was, with a lifetime between having seen it originally and now. Then when I had the hope that was then. Waugh's language and the music help ensure it remains wonderful and timeless.

This is my 3rd go round with this beloved series. When I saw it in the early 80's in America i was just a teenager. Even though i had no idea half the stuff they were talking about, I loved it. I was just too young to understand it and had no familiarity with the aristocracy of Britain. I see different things each time i watch it now that im much older......So beautifully done!

There is a certain type of person drawn to Brideshead; those painful, passionate, nostalgic seekers... it is good to see that they exist, beyond my immediate acquaintance.

I think anyone who's had that Arcadian Summer at that particular time in their life would see themselves in the novel and series. Episode 2 captured the feeling perfectly, and how you seek it for a while like Charles does, then actively distance yourself from it like Charles ( see 1 Corinthians 13 on childish things) only to be unexpectedly ambushed by it later in life.

No other actors can hold a candle to these two. I still have a teddy bear named Sebastian after 29 years.

“Should we be getting drunk every night on this liquid nostalgia for a fading golden age which itself was depicting the passing of faded golden age, in a tele series from a fading golden age of tele?” “Yes, yes, I think we should.” “Yes, yes, so do I”.

Charles' great mistake is confusing Sebastian's charm with depth of character. This is the undoing of Charles and what makes him the hollow joyless husk of a man by series end. Sebastian led him into this fool's paradise and Julia kept him there.

+Messylin It's not a fool's paradise, it's a real paradise - if it wasn't for Sebastian and Julia Charles would not have found God

Charles is also a young man with little depth of character .

And I named my bear Aloysius. Not very original, I'm afraid, but I did it as an ode to Sebastian.

@TheGothims he is very attached to that teddy bear. I love how jeremy never thinks anything about that he just figures if that is what sebastian is always going to have with him then it is perfectly alright.

03:26 - Charles Ryder, pushing forth his injured friend Sebastian through the gardens of 'Brideshead' (1981). It bears a striking resemblance to the 30 years later released footage of Lady Mary Crawley, pushing forth her paralyzed lover Matthew over the lawns of 'Downton' (2011): kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJ1rmtano5eTd6g.html.

Guilt, gayness and the fecklessness of youth.....coloured by a coming savage war. All looked back on, in hindsight. Unique.
