Brian May launches a brand new book and opens the doors to a wondrous, immersive exhibition at Proud Galleries, celebrating 3-D photography and beauty across the world in many different forms.
With a guest appearance from Ben Elton who explores the magic of the exhibit with Brian.

THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT:
Stereoscopy Is Good For You: Life in 3-D contains the work of over 100 21st- century stereoscopic 3-D photographers from around the world during the COVID years.
In an uncertain world, this project two years in the making, shines light, beauty and hope in 3-D through the pages of a book created by Brian May and a new stereoscopic community centred around the Instagram
social medium.
Brian, creator of the 21st-century incarnation of the London Stereoscopic Company (LSC), has become an Internet evangelist for 3-D photography in recent years. Through the LSC, he invited the world to capture uplifting images from the uncertainty of their new reality. As Covid continued to
take its toll on the world, the fast growing stereo community kept on snapping away, lifting their spirits through this often neglected, but uniquely powerful photographic medium. Throughout the last two years thousands of powerful images came pouring in, celebrating nature, intriguing insects, people, pets, architecture, indoor recreations, even the sky above.... and a new title was born.
Brian and the LSC team were delighted by the quality and creativity of the photos they received, capturing the surrounding world in an extraordinary situation, and reflecting the resilience of the human spirit. And so began the epic mission of selecting and polishing the most expressive photos to compile Stereoscopy Is Good For You: Life in 3-D. The pages are filled with striking juxtapositions as we peer into the lives of photographers from the UK, Spain, Italy, France, Indonesia, Australia,NZ, Thailand, US, Mexico, Paraguay, Sweden, NL and many more.
The book comes with an OWL Stereoscopic Viewer, designed by Brian, that does the job of transforming the stereoscopic pairs of images into magical in- depth 3-D.
So impressed by the imagery, leading London photography gallery, Proud Galleries, are installing a five month exhibition showcasing a selection of the images, to create a wondrous immersive experience.

“Here you will see an amazing breadth of invention. Some people took their smartphones into their garden if they were lucky enough to have one, capturing flowers, plants and garden creatures. Some snapped the newly appreciated beauty of their immediately surrounding landscapes on permitted walks. Some, stuck indoors, ingeniously managed to
create whole model scenes from toys and models. And some even turned their cameras to the sky. Some worked purely virtually, on their laptops, creating imaginary landscapes. Some opportunistically
used data available on the Internet to make stereos of the heavens. And, as the COVID restrictions eventually began to relax, the new
stereographers ventured back out and reclaimed the world ! You will see it all here.”

With Brian having such an interest in 3D a VR concert would be awesome (Pay for purchase of course) I cannot be at any of the live concerts, but VR would be the next best thing :) Congratulations Brian, Love what you do,

I was absolutely blown about 12 years ago when I was about 10 years old and a bag filled with stereo pictures was donated to our Elementary School’s Arts and Crafts room by a student’s parent. I am happy people are keeping this media alive, so cool!

What a brilliant idea. I'm sorry that I'm late to the party as this is the first time that I have heard of this exhibition and book. I see many striking images (the horses in the snow is one of my favourites.) I did submit an anaglyph 3D photographic print of mine to a 2010 art exhibition complete with a pair of red / cyan glasses for viewing. I received a Highly Commended from the judge (got a bottle of wine and some gift vouchers from a local business.) This summer, I'm going to try some underwater 3D photography for the first time here in Australia which is certainly going to be challenging.

please tour with this Brian if you can, i’d love to see this in Edinburgh if possible. I thought your comment about this is how the Victorian’s saw the world fascinating. i recently came across a book that was made by Hockney and Martyn Gayford, and it has this idea of how photography changed how the world was percieved, with an example from Japan and how courtesan’s were described in poetry before the camera and what they looked like through photography being different and i’m intrigued whether this being such a popular medium had it’s own particular impact on perception of the world and whether that fed into literature etc

Brian May was once the "Love of My Life", "Good Company" & a "Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy"... but later began to say: "Don't stop me Now I'm Here" "i want it all", "I want to break free" "Some Day, One Day" and thought he was "Doing Alright" wanting to "Play the game" with "one vision", but came "under pressure", & was deemed to be both "Death on Two Legs" & a "Liar", then soon realised he was "the loser in the end", thinking: "see what a fool I've been" - "I'm Going Slightly Mad" and so "Was It All Worth It?". They used to say to him: "You're My Best Friend" but now say "Who Needs You" ya "Great King Rat?"... "You Don't Fool Me" you "Stone Cold Crazy" "White Man" ... "Nevermore" will I "Let Me In Your Heart Again" Brian!
I've been wanting to ask you about convergent vs divergent stereo viewing. I find that divergent just does't work on large screen devices because the spacing of the images is farther apart than your eyeballs. My eyes can view at infinity and be parallel, but they can't aim apart from each other. I find convergent viewing easy regardless of screen size. Any thoughtss on this? All of your material online seems to be set up for divergent viewing. Thanks, love your work in astronomy as well as arts!

If we'll is an older technology anaglyphs have an advantage, You don't need to see the photos so close, you can perceive the 3D effect by seeing them even at 3 or 5 meters.

I don't know exactly why, but I trust the words of this sly, curly-haired man. It's not like he's very famous all over the world, but he has a PhD, so I heard he's worth believing! But in fact - I think with what enthusiasm Brian talks about photography and stereoscopy, he really likes it and he is able to attract many admirers to this type of art. Brian, I have just seen your fox hunting video and agree with everything that you say, especially at 1:03. How could you accept a knighthood from someone who wrote letters to Tony Blair pleading for him to reverse the ban on fox hunting and whose family continues to kill hundreds of animals for "sport" every year. Just google "Charles and Camilla fox hunting". The Queen was also heavily involved (she was also patron of the Royal Foxhound Show) so you wouldn't have been able to accept it from her either. How about handing it back on 1st May ? You would be in good company.
