I listened to this every single night for 9 month while going through stage 2 aggressive cancer,,, I always thought if I die while listening to this it can't all be bad, luckily a miracle happened and I'm here now to talk about it... remember it can happen to anyone anywhere so make the most of each day and don't ever forget to tell loved ones how important they are to you. ✌

I too have just recently come through such a cancer, and I too discovered this sonic hymn when googling around "ending". Then a Macmillan nurse shared with me a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson - "It is the wounded oyster that mends her shell with pearl." Thank you for your post. Stay strong. There is always Hope. I am so sorry for your loss. I had a dad like you did. He died 7 years ago and I am crying now thinking of him. It is good to hear music that links you both. My father and I shared a lot of music and after he passed I kept hearing music that I wanted him to hear. I finally realized he was sending it to me. You can continue his life by carrying on. It does get better with time. Talk to him.

You should consider watching Ricky Gervais' "After Life" which is a story about a man who had a wonderful, perfect marriage before his wife died of cancer, and how he learned to live again after her passing. It's an absolutely beautiful story, and it's not something you would expect Ricky Gervais to put out. I'll be honest, if my wife passed, I don't think I would be able to go on. But reading peoples' anecdotes in this comment section or watching stuff like After Life makes me realize that, as soul-crushingly hard as it would be to lose her, it's possible to eventually heal, even if it's one of the hardest things you'll ever have to experience. Sorry for this spiel, I just had to let some of this out.

@@FSAPOJake Thanks for your comment, never apologise for 'letting out' feelings. I am aware of that Ricky Gervais series and may well check it out, thanks. I am lucky, I have the support of my three brothers, good neighbours and literally hundreds of friends as I belong to a large motorcycle club. They have been incredibly supportive and I have just returned from a four day weekend at the first rally of the 2023 season. It was emotional at times, some friends didn't know my wife Sara had died, so that was hard. But over all it was a fabulous social weekend which really lifted my spirits. Sara loved doing the rallies and events with the club and I am now doing them for her memory as much as for me. She had so many health issues and fought so hard, the few times I have come close to ending it all has made me realise she would be seriously angry with me if I did, after she had fought so hard to live. That keeps me from going too far. The wound will never heal, I know that, but I hope to find new ways to deal with it as the time passes. Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

Lost my dear mum to Ovarian Cancer in July 2023 at the age of 64, after a rollercoaster 3 year battle. We used this entrance music at her funeral. There was never going to be a piece of musical art more fitting for the moment. Simply a masterpiece of our time. RIP Mum 🌻 #BeMoreAnne xx

Top Gear's segment on the Aston Martin V12 Vantage introduced me to this song and all these years later, has stood out to me as one of the most memorable segments of the show. Just absolutely bursting with emotion and this song has alot to do with it. As Jeremy Clarkson described the Aston Martin is how I'd describe this song. "Wonderful, wonderful wonderful."

We get sad when we hear this, not because it's a sad song.. but because it's just so beautiful. Like how your child can make you cry just because you love them so much. Me too, like a baby, and I'm not going to see 60 again! It's a phenomenal piece of music and is a testament to fact that music affects humans in such a deep way.

My dad who was 87 passed away 3 weeks ago, my dad suffered for a month I spent his last day with him for hours he was not responsive however I talked to him for hours played him his fave songs and now he will forever be in a special place in my heart. Thanks thanks Brian Eno for this incredible song it helps me immensely on a very personal level

So very sorry for your loss. My dad was 85 when he passed on November 15, 2020 after a weeklong battle with COVID; he was unable to talk at the end, but as an ICU nurse held the phone to his ear I told him through tears how much I loved him, and how proud I was of all he’d accomplished. My brother, whom he lived with the last few years of his life, initially had him cremated, and later interred alongside our mother after giving him a proper military sendoff. We love and miss him terribly.

This is the saddest song of all time. There is nothing more sadder than this. It is truly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever. We are living on a ball of dust in the vacuum of infinity. Had this experience this year with the LIMBO soundtrack (same caliber of ambient music) back during the comet shower on august 11th-13th. 12-2am, far away from traffic, clear night sky, moon slowly rising behind some pine trees, the wind rustling through the leaves, and loooads of shooting stars. I put the music on and it was an experience I will never forget.

This piece is what it must be like for the soul to depart from the body once it has died. Ethereal and cold but also comforting and peaceful.

I almost never get tears when i listen to music, but i do when i listen to this. Thanks Brian Eno for creating a masterpiece. A few chords and melody on a lone synthesizer in the 1980's still manages to touch so many people. People 100's of years from now will still be moved by it, I believe. 🌟

I first heard this song when I was about 10-11 in the movie "Traffic" I'm 31 now and I still love this song. It's the song that created my love for ambient music.

add a few more years of age on top and we had the identical experience. i was aware of ambient music, but this song playing at the end of that film unlocked the door and threw me head first into the genre and eno’s entire discography. still revisit it every once in a great while, and it’s just as beautiful and magical as it was that very first time.

To me this is the sort of music that makes me feel like I’ve reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Like I’ve finally found peace, tranquility and balance and all that’s left inside me is a sense of euphoria. There are many different ways in which people perceive this piece of music although to me, this is very uplifting

So surprised to hear this beautiful piece of music at former Finnish President Martti Ahtisaari's funeral. Great choice for a man who won The Nobel Peace Prize in 2008.

All music here on KZread is recorded obviously...But that doesn't prevent them from being dated.Music gets dated very easily, by melodic patterns, production of the time or even just by the Zeitgeist,but this song seems timeless, That's what he's talking about.

I read somewhere that Eno's music is being used to calm people with anger and anxiety type disorders . I find much of his music is very stimulating and so futuristic.

It’s so weird how you can feel happy and sad at the same time. I feel happy and grateful for all the memories I have when thinking about my lost loved ones but at the same time I hurt because they are not around anymore and I miss them. Feeling joy and grief at the same time is like the ultimate pain, but a beautiful pain.

To hear Daniel Lanois and Brian talk about this song is mesmerizing. Lanois calls it a "hymn" and says it evokes in us the "deep yearn" for things unspeakable. Brian talks about how he mechanically the song wasn't working and he decided to run it backwards. He mentions how if you create a piece of music and don't give any preconceived ideas to it that people will creatively take it to places unheard of. "An Ending Ascent" has always been biblical for me and takes me to the beatific vision.

The most peaceful place on earth right now is here.

I first heard this song in the Aston Martin V12 Vantage top gear review, Ill say this, Jeremy Clarkson really knows how to make a car review turn emotional, so in his words, I describe this song as “Fantastic, it’s wonderful, wonderful, wonderful”

I brought a number of CDs to the hospital he night my daughter was born twenty years ago. But right from the start, it was 3 AM, I played only the two ambient ones I had, Eno's "Apollo" and Budd's "The White Arcades" . When "An Ending" came on, I turned up the volume and let the music flow through the whole L&D that night. No one said anything except a nurse who popped in, wanting to know what the name of the most beautiful music was.

No discernible beginning, no discernible end. So vast and spacious. So beautiful in its simplicity. That's the universe. That's consciousness. That's this song. Incredible to have been created by a mere human being.

How on Earth could anyone dislike this one?!

Whenever I hear this, I feel the presence of my late parents on my shoulders, telling me they're proud. I hope they are.

This (along with Weightless from the same album) are two of the most healing songs I know, yet I cannot help but feel a twinge of sadness at these visuals. This is the only home we have, and we are not treating her and our fellow humans as well as we could be. Be excellent to each other.

it is indeed an absolute shame humans use their sapience for sinful acts of evil rather than caring ones of good. may we live long and die out.

I had this played at my mother's funeral a couple of years ago. Just this filling the church and the song of her beloved birds outside. This is all about being at peace and saying goodbye.

The ending of Traffic is a Thousand times better because of Eno's masterpiece!

You listen to eno and pink floyd, nice.

This is song of memory and also a dream of seeing all of those who have left us, but in a brief moment you are with them again, embracing, laughing, and crying. Until we meet them again, someday.

If the Earth was music, if Space was sound, if humanity was a symphony then they would be this pure, delicate, captivating and powerful ode at the same time.

its the most beautiful piece of music ive ever heard.

A friend of mine turned me on to Brian Eno in high school and have been listening ever since in 1990 , his music really makes you reflect on life. His song Drift is another great piece like this one.

Imagine making something this beautiful, this melody will forever be legendary.

I requested this to be played at my Fathers funeral as his Coffin passed through the curtain to be cremated. I like to think he approved of my choice.

How music can open people up never fails to amaze me! Some of the comments on here are truly beautiful just like this song. Take care everybody x

I feel nostalgic about a life I never had

(Dave here) I lost my mom this past January. I was by her side. The heartache is tremendous. But I think about happy times and laughter with her and the pain lessens, especially with this piece by Brian Eno . It is, sincerely, peaceful and calms my breathing .

This is such a moving, wonderful piece of music, I don't think I can better any of the comments below, except to say one day this will definitely be viewed as a "classical" piece of music.

I know your pain!

I have searched for this music - I first heard it played when the 7 astronauts were lost...I went along thinking it was a John Cage piece. So glad I've found it. Achingly beautiful, it makes me cry

This wonderful song makes me want to hug our beautiful Earth, the only home we mortals have. Let's try take better care of it, the creatures and each other. Blessings Mr.Eno and whomever reads this in 2021 : )

Headphones on, eyes closed, volume turned up and relax...and leave this broken planet for a few moments to ascend to the steps of heaven.

I miss my Dad more than anything. Listening to this makes me feel close to him, such a powerful and moving song.

A track which transends emotion. First heard at quite probably the happiest, most fleeting moment of my life. Still in my teens, wide-eyed with possibilities, my life ahead doing what I loved, steeped with nurturing & loving friendships, excitedly exploring mind, body and boundaries, a vehicle with which to leave the apron strings behind and push off into the unknown, wise without substantive reason. I thought I knew everything and Eno supplied the anthem. In my 60s there is now not a piece of music that will induce within me a more tearful melancholy so rapidly for passed loved ones, missed opportunities, unrealised goals and a weariness with life and the planet's conflicts that barely the first few musical bars of this produces. A simply genius 260 seconds that conduits with laser precision to the listener's noesis.

Beauty in a song. This is to be cherished always.

Eno some how captures the moment a soul passes to wherever souls go. My Mam died in my arms recently and I believe it was a privalage to be there for her. Some how this music feels right, capturing that timeless passing sensation. Eno has always given us heavenly magic.

I can’t listen to it without tearing up... always a wuss at heart I guess. The sheer humanity of the tune speaks volumes. I’ve said enough... I’m so lucky to have been on this mortal coil when Eno (and Fripp) were making music...

Touching melody on all levels...I am in tears listening and watching and asking why my fellow South Africans are looting & burning our bellowed country of South Africa. Fear, chaos, destruction and no fear of repercussions. When you look down from space you really see how insignificant worldly issues are in the contrast of cosmos.

Everytime I hear this song, I meditate and am able to visualize seeing visiting certain loved ones in heaven and it feels so lucid. I come away each time with a different experience, and find it helps with my grief. Thank you for that gift of your music and this song that helps me. 😇💞

People sometimes accuse Eno of being too cold or clinical in his process. I refer them to this devastating piece that just radiates raw emotion. This song says more than so many songs with actual words do.

This got stuck in my head when I first heard it as a kid, I am so grateful to be able to find this! Beyond beautiful.

My 8 month old son has smooth chill radio on in the background at bed time, and some nights I hear this through the baby monitor and it brings me to tears just looking at him sleep whilst this plays so subtle in the background. I finally found the name of the song.

A music that has made me feel sad. 2 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer. Her mom(grandmother) visited me in a dream. Telling me mom's condition was just unfortunate and god will always forgive me despite regrets I've made. She made me promise along with mom to stay strong no matter what and I will never break it. Grandma then saved me from a war with depression. The next day, I helped mom's beloved soul home to heaven and be reunited with grandma. Despite her physical body no longer responsive, in heaven she said for final words "I love you Thomas". Both in heaven and the physical world i teared and respond saying "I love you too mommy". Before I came back to the physical world, I saw God's face and he was smiling at me impressed of what I done and said "You did a brave thing my son, your mom is home now. Your time has not come yet though. Until the day comes, return to the physical world". Mom's body went peaceful later that night. I did what i felt was the right thing. I miss her so much. Rest in peace Mom. I will see you again. 😭

My mom is also with cancer and I don't know what will happen but I truly believe what you've shared. I've had some sort of experience, much nicer and not related to any sort of death.

The most perfect piece of music ever written, in my estimation. It really captures all the harmonies of the stars. You can actually take this piece of music apart and play it at different tempos and find a whole new song embedded in it. Eno was listening to angels sing when he put this down for us. Thank you Brian Eno for this masterpiece!

I agree with you. However, I find that "Subterraneans" ... the last track from David Bowie's "Low" album, composed by Bowie and Eno is on the same level and aura. Awesome work.

Beautiful beyond words. I flew back from China over the Gobi Desert some years ago and by a fluke of timing we had perpetual sunset for hours. The view down from the plane was unimaginably beautiful and moving. I think about it often, and somehow these views of the Earth from space remind me of it. The music itself has been a favourite of mine since buying the original vinyl album way back when it was first released (still got it!).

It’s music like this that’s just so beautiful that it physically hurts.

This is the most heavenly music I have ever heard. It always moves and uplifts me and puts me in a state of blissful peace. It is like my favourite poem, by Rumi, THE FIELD: Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I will meet you there. When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about. Ideas, language, even the phrase ‘each other’, make no sense.

Beautiful song. It just moves through you. Like life, it's here then gone.

The grandeur of this piece of music is beyond words. It's propbably why it was used for the excellent Apollo moon documentary, 'For All Mankind'.
