Brian Burke vs Don Cherry

Спорт

It was as if somebody kicked his dog Blue.
Turns out part of what set Don Cherry off Saturday night was that his old friend and Coach's Corner partner Ron MacLean had been lumped in with him - the two became one in complaints from Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke to the CBC.
"I didn't like it," Cherry said of his 26-year Coach's Corner partner being involved in Burke "going behind our backs to our bosses" to tell the CBC they "should get rid of Cherry and MacLean."
Say it ain't so.
For his part, MacLean confirmed that Burke did indeed go to their superiors.
"I don't think it was as much to get us fired as much as he wanted to see us muzzled, which is ridiculous," MacLean said.
To Burke's credit, MacLean said, the Leafs GM phoned him before he met with CBC executive director of sports properties Jeff Orridge, who, like Burke, is a Harvard-educated lawyer, several days after the NHL all-star weekend.
"He said, 'I am feeling kind of lousy doing it this way without talking to you first,' " MacLean said of the Burke call.
MacLean was offered a chance to meet with Burke before the meeting but declined - explaining to the Leafs president his and Cherry's job is not to present "all rainbows" in their broadcast.
"Brian feels that I egg Grapes on but in his call he was cordial," MacLean said.
Cherry and Stephen Brunt were on Sportsnet 590 The Fan Tuesday with Bob McCown saying Burke also met with the league with similar concerns.
Said Brunt: "At the board of governors I guess what was implied was if you guys want to get this contract, if you want to renew Hockey Night in Canada when it comes next year, you better get rid of this guy."
Said Cherry: "That's what I heard, too" with word being presented to the governors: "Don't forget we are going to be the guys in charge here and this guy's a loose cannon."
Burke in an e-mail did not respond to questions about this.
The CBC has also not commented on this issue.
Meanwhile, MacLean said Orridge did not divulge the discussions of the meetings that happened two days after the Burke phone call.
"I am not losing any sleep over it," said Ron. "I understand Brian is under a lot of pressure and he treats each day like it's a hockey game. A general manager of such a major professional sports franchise should be able to handle it but it's the way he is. I like him a lot and he is a good guest."
He said he harbours no resentment over Burke going behind his and Don's backs to their boss.
"I forgive Brian," said MacLean. "It's over as far as I am concerned."
But for Cherry, who told McCown and Brunt "it wasn't a very Irish thing for Burke to do," when it comes to forgiveness, there can be a different time frame.
MacLean laughed.
"Don gets mad at me, too, sometimes but he always comes around," he said. "Actually he and Brian are similar like that."
And MacLean made the point that while Burke is under scrutiny, "don't forget Don is under enormous pressure to deliver to his audience too."
He said it didn't surprise him that Cherry would take offence to somebody complaining about MacLean and be the enforcer for his old buddy and teammate.
"He has had my back before when necessary and I have done the same for him," he said.
During the playoffs on the road they often end up "buying a 12-pack" and watching the late game in the hotel room.
"I will drink seven and he will drink five," Cherry said. "We are like Frick and Frack. Sometimes, mostly in the playoffs, we have a foxhole mentality."
It would, he said, be difficult to drive a wedge between them.
"We are close friends."
Brian Burke found that out first-hand this week.

This is my reply to people who hate Cherry. “You people” is a demographic. A critique of a minority group is too often dismissed as phobic. I remember, a speeding black TINTED Mercedes flying through my condo Corp. I yelled, “slow the fuck down”. He stopped and reversed, rolled down his window. He’s black. Ok. So? I said, “why can’t you people slow down?” “YOU PEOPLE???” Yes, “You people who keep speeding through here”. He drove off slower. He seemed genuinely upset that I didn’t allow him to use his societal security blanket. If it happens to me, it’s life’s hardships. If it happens to POC it’s racism without evidence because, well, it just has to be, right? Wrong. The fact that so many people feel that way says plenty. Victimhood. Get some. He was dejected that I WASN’T a racist. If the race grievance industry wasn’t a fraudulent one, he would have dapped me up and said, “thank God, alright cool”. But he wasn’t. That’s whack as fuck and not my fault. If you don’t live a white life, you only naturally assume all is well in our lives and we aren’t pulled over for BS reasons (because 90% of law enforcement motor vehicle assessments are made by PROFILING. NOT RACIALLY. HUMANLY). So tired of explaining this. I’m gonna put it on my notes and just paste this shit.

"take a look at 'his' anahiem team they're all full of canadians i dont get it" That's because Bryan MURRAY built the anaheim ducks, he drafted or acquired over 18 players on that team, including Getzlaf and Perry. Bryan Burke got tossed from the nucks and inherited the team that Murray built. The next year with Burke as the gm the ducks lost first round. IN FACT, minus that 07 cup run, with the team murray built, burke doesnt have a single playoff series win. PERIOD.

Why are the Leafs so messed up? They haven't even made it to the Stanley Cup final, let alone winning the cup, since the late sixties and yet they are the richest team in the NHL. They have one of the most favourable schedules with the HNIC Saturday games. Is it the pressure of playing in Toronto?

Cherry usually picks the controversial subjects to deal with, and half the time he shoots from the hip, says something which pisses people off, but at least he says what people are thinking. NO matter what one thinks of Burke, its evident he has a penchant for "Americanization" of the game of hockey. That is, recruiting US colleges for players who are playing there because they have not been decent enough junior players to get drafted, or haven't played major junior at all. Get rid of him. Fast.

This team lineup was almost completely recruited by Burke. He cleaned out the Toronto Many Fails and created this team we have now. Keeping Wilson around was his biggest mistake around the team. Cherry has his own agenda to support local hockey, which is great but it doesn't mean Burke ruined the team by not having a local player. All in all it doesn't matter, I like our current coach and things are moving forward.

I don't think a guy like Bozak (who could not make major junior, by the way and is a college player) would be a first or second liner anywhere else but Toronto, and thats because the timing for a guy like him to play in the NHL was ripe- Burke and Wilson were in charge...nothing against Bozak- good for him

Was it just jealously, as most of Canada's "smart" media establishment has always felt insecure about their own popularity in relationship to what Cherry had been able to build. Was it really something about Brunt's East Coast vacations and his relative snobbery. I'd love to hear both sides give their versions.

Burke is entertaining, but he's just not a real good guy --- we watched his act in Vancouver -- -and at one point HIS WIFE called a talk in show to take on a host, whom she thought had disparaged her husband.....hmmmm.... anyways, I don't mind Burke, but Cherry is the real deal === and for anyone who mocks his intelligence -- they should check their success against his...

yeah, well hockey is #1 in Canada, so I hope your junior league would be able to produce hockey players. We do alright in the U.S. , all things considered.

They did avoid Canadian players! It was obvious 26 drafted 3 Canadian players. Burke was a dummy

Burke is lousy, he hasn’t done anything good for any team. Anaheim just landed on his lap.

Looks like your silly comment has come to show it's true nature. Burke built this team that is 5th in the standings.

Very few prospects??? Seguin, Hamilton, Caron, Knight. They have some others, more importantly they also have some good young players that they will lock up long term. They also have a guy named Tukka RASK in goal for the future. Yeah they are in real trouble. As opposed to the leafs prospects. Scrivens/reimer *snickers* then *bursts out laughing*, nazem so weak its sad kadri. Schenn you miscoached and is now in Philly. Yeah there is colborne and ashton but you lost Aulie. You're toast.

I was never one to sit in Burke's corner, but I was also never a hater. I do believe he has filled our minor ranks quite well though giving us potential in the future.

If u ain't from Ontario you don't know what hockey is. Hockey was invented in Ontario. I've listened to don for years. If your not from Canada, especially Ontario, your not any good. Hockey is played outside Canada. Looked at all the Canadian gms. No wonder why that half the players are canadaian.
