Brexit and British fishermen | DW Documentary

More than two years after Brexit, British fishermen are angry. They were promised more control over fishing rights in British waters, but what they’ve gotten is reduced income. Many of them voted Leave, but now they feel they’ve been let down.
The fishing industry overwhelmingly supported Brexit. Darren Kenyon is a fisherman from Grimsby in North East England. He believed in the government’s Brexit promises - including more control over fishing rights in British waters -- and voted Leave. But two and a half years after Brexit, he feels betrayed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Kenyon’s income is lower than it used to be and there’s more red tape than ever.
Fishermen aren’t the only ones in Humberside who regret voting Leave. It’s only now that people here realize how much the region benefited in recent decades from EU subsidies. Nearly 70% of them voted for Brexit, even though the region is part of what’s known as the Red Wall, Labour’s heartlands. These days, locals feel they’ve been let down. "I almost feel embarrassed that I voted out," says one man who owns a fish-and-chips shop. "I wish I could turn back the clock.”
The economic situation in North East England has been in decline since the 1990s. EU fishing quotas hit the region hard. In December 2019, these local frustrations were seized upon and exploited by Boris Johnson during his election campaign. Just days before Britain went to the polls, Boris Johnson visited the fish market in Grimsby and promised the industry hundreds of thousands of tonnes of extra catch, more regulatory autonomy and better access to waters. But his government has delivered on none of these promises. Fishermen, fishmongers and suppliers all feel betrayed.
For now, at least, there’s still a hip-hop project in Hull that keeps young people off the streets. It used to be paid for by the EU. It’s lost that funding now, and project leader Steve Arnott knows better than to expect any help from London.

I realize they never would’ve expected him to allow European fisherman to continue fishing British waters but they should’ve known the chances of being able to continue with the same quotas was nil. There’s no way Johnson can hold his own against Europe’s top politicians when he has literally zero leverage created by Brexit. They sold the British people a pie in the sky that had no chance of becoming reality. Even if they had a worthy politician in office who was better in the art of negotiation they’d still have come out worse. 90% of all the promises they made when they were fighting for Brexit were/are complete BS that they knew weren’t possible. What’s scary is how bad their deals are going to be with the more powerful nations like the US and especially China. China is going to rake the UK over the coals and the US will end up with more favorable terms than before.

Not sure if it was explained in the film but I think a significant problem is actually the quotas. the way that the UK distributed quotas was different to the EU and IIRC the British quotas were sold with the boats whereas the EU fishermen used an alternative system. Buying up old UK boats would allow the EU fishermen to enlarge their quota. Much of this was done while Farage was a MEP and he preferred te bars of Brussels rather than negotiating with MEPs from other EU countries to strike a 'deal'.

Why would the UK want to, it has removed the shackles that burdened economical growth, stopped been a gravy train and actually seen exports to both EU and non EU shoot up and no longer has to do the bidding of EU rule. (excluding impacts of covid and recent energy rises effecting most countries.). -The EU has trillions in dead bonds it cannot pay back. -The EU has mass high youth unemployment -Many of it members are shackled in debt they cannot even pay the interest of and Italy and Greece are prime examples, Italy been on the brink of collapse as we speak. -The Euro is a failed currency, it is artificially propped up and has been for a decade+ I could go on for pages but the EU is a bad body, it bullies it members, refuses to acknowledge democracy while claiming to be democratic, it currently has thousands of legal cases against its members and been a member stifles your economic growth, global economic growth statistics over the last 2 decades clearly show this and it is estimated its contributing members have lost trillions in potential growth because of how the EU ring fenced trade. I ask again, why would we want to go back to that and have them take our money to fund the very thing that damages our economy?

Employment fell to record lows after brexit, wages for the lowest paid rose at faster rates than other EU members and is a direct market response to turning off the tap of unlimited free cheap labour from the EU. The UK has one of the most stable financial markets and currencies in the world, this attracts and has increased the size of the financial sector and its investment, the claims of 100'000's of lost jobs moving to europe after brexit never came to fruition and in fact the opposite occurred. We are in the process of doing multiple tariff free trade deals, we are 90% through the process of joining the CPTPP which gives us access to a trade group that unlike the EU stays politically neutral and pushes for tariff free trade where possible, it has a market base of 9trillion and half a billion consumers so ...... Sorry to burst your bubble but the UK's prospects are exceptionally good and why we are seeing key investment from all over the world, any hiccoughs we are going through atm are global issues effecting most large trading nations and we are dealing with them well in comparison. So please remind me again how regaining sovereignty, cancelling the 3rd highest membership fee in the block, putting our own justice system above the EU's and been able to trade with who ever we want when we want is a bad thing?

but its not a trading block. it is a USA of EUrope superstate project. the "trading bloc" much touted finished with the treaty of maastrict in 1994. before 1994=trading bloc after 1994 treaty of maastrict "free movement of goods capital, services and *people* " the *PEOPLE* bit has moved the eec from a trading area (goods) to a unified entity-with movement of people, the superstate.
