Brewing with Wil Wheaton (Part 1)
Brewing TV is in SoCal to brew with actor Wil Wheaton. We wanted to brew a wicked triple IPA, a true Californian creation. The team shot such a huge amount of video and great conversation that we have broken it down into a few segments for you to enjoy. Watch Part 1 of this home brewing session where we start the brew and talk beer, equipment and southern California craft brewing with Wil. Then Watch Part 2 where we get deeper into the brew and the all those hops! • Brewing Triple IPA wit...

Great video,,thanks. Sheldon would be so jealous of your brewing knowledge.
I used to "help" my buddy brew in Denver before I moved back to the East Coast. Basically I showed up, acted as a pack mule dragging his setup out of a basement closet to the patio for 15 minutes and just drank homebrewed cask ale off his basement beer engine while lending a third hand all afternoon. It was a great way to spend a Saturday. I mentioned once or twice that Timothy Taylor's Landlord was my all-time favorite beer and I wanted to try it from cask. He bought all the ingredients, I unwittingly "helped" him brew it without knowing what we were doing, and he gave me the small tabletop firkin for my 35th birthday, tapped it for me and installed a little nitrogen bottle on the side. I don't know that much about brewing, but I deeply appreciated the gift. The beer was 10x better than what I'd had in bottles when friends went to England and brought some back.
I disagree with the other comments saying there was too much talk. Half the fun of brewing is hanging out and talking about your love of beer and brewing. Please keep making excellent content like this.
Wil Wheaton is the best thing to hit Brewing TV since the days of Dawson, Chip, etc. Great episode.
I love Wil Wheaton. So cool to hear about how he ties in brewing with his fam! Awesome dude.
Wil Wheaton kicks ass! Great video
Best, and in fact only watchable, episode of Brewing TV since the departure of Dawson, Keeler, and Walton. Make more like this. Casual, informative, but less commercial than your other recent offerings. More brew days.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Mr. Wheaton seems really knowledgeable about brewing and added a lot to these videos. Thanks guys!
Great vid guys I want part two NOWWWWW . Lol
Wil Wheaton home brews!. Who would have known. The only thing better, would be an episode with Wil Wheaton and Sheldon Cooper brewing a batch of beer!.
Will Wheaton, the man, the legend.
Never thought I'd be jelly of Wil Wheaton, nice home brewing gear! AND great video(s)!
Awesome! A couple of years ago I bought a high temp pump and high temp food grade silicone tubing. I place the the pump, tubing and sparge arm all inside the mash tun and circulate inside. Temperature is maintained even after an hour and a half of conversion. Several times during the mash I'll shut the pump off and stir the grains to prevent channeling. It has worked very well.
Why is it that when ***** explains it, it makes sense? "That'll do, pig... that'll do..." CLASSIC!
Great video. I really enjoyed watching. I can't wait for part 2.
I enjoyed this.....Part 2 please !!!!
Thank you guys so much for this video, it was very informative. I am just getting into all grain brewing and have been searching for a detailed walk through like this for a while. Also, Wil Wheaton you're the man! (and have a badass homebrew setup)
That was great guys! Thanks. Good information and entertaining as well. Keep up the good work.
awesome video. So much to write down and add to my brewing knowledge. One of the best brewing videos Northern Brewer has done.
Great video, I'm just starting to homebrew and this has given me a lot of information. Really appreciate it.
Very entertaining. Love to get Will's thoughtful and funny comments on all things brewing!
Wil needs his own brew show!
wil Wheaton shows up in all my hobbies.

Awesome job! Love all the chemistry-based simple explanations. This weekend we'll be brewing up a "Jamocha Shake" - Coffee/vanilla bean Milk Stout! Cheers Wil!
Nice video! Keep up the good work!

Good to see Wil Wheaton talk about by favorite hobby :) . Making beer for $8 a case since June 2011 for me. What you save from the BATFE taxes (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) in taxes - you put into your own great beer. :)
Great video, very informative. I am just making the switch over to All Grain and brewing my first batch in the next week. This is a huge help getting me prepared for my first all grain brew.
Will Wheaton is my spirit animal
"One of those moments when I 'Levelled Up'"... perfect
love the show and when you have guests like Wil Wheaton it´s really nice to watch
I JUST started home brewing... Woke up this morning, got myself a barely done un carbonated beer, lovin the sht out of it.
Nice Video, Looking forward to the next episode. Cheers!
Totally love the fact that Wil Wheaton is a homebrewer. Cheers!
Cheers Gentlemen it was properly brilliant, I'm a big fan of just every everything you gentlemen have down in this Vid. Its very Shiny
The best instruction video there is!!!! keep it coming with those vids!tnx!
Really great Video. I need to get me a pump set up NOW!!!! Famous folk love home brewing too.
im so happy right now :) great video . Thanks guys :)
I LEARNED SO MUCH. This is such a cool process, can't want to learn more in the second episode!
Small world. Dnd and beer. Wil is my new mentor
I came for Wil Wheaton, but stayed for the brewing! Rationale for the choices of grains, etc. were geektastic, and appealing to me, and I was kinda hoping for a more explicit recipe.
This is so wonderfully helpful and informative. I was engaged for all 25 min. I think it's time to visit the homebrew store for some new toys. Thanks guys!
I think this is the 100th time that I have watched this video and part 2 video! The only difference between watching the videos this time and the other 99 times is that I am taking notes this time...
What I love about this process, is that you all have essentially made a sous vide beer brewing station.
Wil explained this so well. He knows how to talk to the common man. Legend
Good to watch while you're waiting for your kettle to boil.
Great video guys! Looking forward to the next and hope you make it onto Discovery! Cheers from Cape Town!

Great video! You guys are awesome. Video was helpful
Wil Wheaton nerding out = win!
can't wait to see part two
Great job explaining some of the higher end detailed information such as the yeast eating .... was fun to watch... Thanks
Nice to see you guys back to brewing rather than reviewing Thanks, Can't wait for part 2
Question. I just picked up that exact recirc arm on top of the kettle. The hose that comes with the arm is 3/8" ID hose while the rest of my system has 1/2" ID hose. How can I mate these two sizes up? I noticed in this video it appears you have a quick connect to mate these two size hoses up. Can someone give me a link to those fittings I would need?
Im in love with these guys talking about beer :o I cant wait to brew my first one!

@@fasteddie1241 hi! I ended up opening my lil beer pub. I brew 51 batches and also served from local brewers. Too bad I went to some problems I got to close and work on family business. My brewing years were the most rewarding so far. When I’m on age of retiring I’ll go and open up again 😎🍺

Really dig Wil in this apolitical setting. Great video!
That looks fun to do. I wish I do that here in Afg. I'll wait until I go home in Oregon. You gotta love their microbrewerys PDX and EUG. My favs are Widmer, Deschutes and Bridgeport.
Brew some Woot Stout, Wil. I took home a growler of Woot and drank it out of the stone sampler glass to make it last. Yummy in my tummy
This was Sweet, Thanks:D
I do that same thing with the music notes in my brew log!
Pretty much the most interesting Brewing vid I've seen so far. Can't wait for Part 2. Great job ***** and BrewingTV

Truly, an ale that is the hair of the dog. :)
Thanks! Great tip on the mash temp. I love IPA and my favorite to brew is the U.S. Northwest style, but I love The Truth from Rhinegeist here in Cincinnati. It is absolutely da bomb.
DAMMIT. Part 2 NOW Wheaton!
I love the American attitude towards brewing, that nothing is sacred, as such you end up with such incredible variation. The only issue I have is the tendency to over-hop a beer, and I love hoppy beer, my guess would be that this beer is probably over-hopped looking at the recipe. But I would kill to taste it.
@warman31

Well they are brewing a double ipa, and the double is an American invention, first one being Pliny the Elder made by the Russian River Brewing. It's hoppy stuff, but damn tasty. Americans don't hold certain recipes sacred, but I certainly hold beer sacred and even beer ingredients. Pay me with cash, beer or barley and hops and yeast.
I really liked this! Show more Will Wheaton. This was nice basics video, but I can see it develop into something greater. Good job!
Wow! great vid guys...I was never a fan of Wil Wheaton before this. My only regret is that tattoo.
Oh wow, so good and sad to see Riley, this must have been recorded quite a while ago. Friends and I did a W00tstout 2.0 clone, partial mash since we just didn't have the room in the mash for all that grain. Heh. Anyways, we hit our starting gravity but it didn't finish fermenting out to our target final gravity. It still turned out pretty good, it was just a bit sweeter than it should be. It was my first time brewing, I was basically assisting my buddy with it (it was his system). But yea, nice video, I liked all the info. Looking forward to part 2.
I never do an iodine test. Mostly because I hate the staining from iodine. I use iodine at work and I wear special gloves to deal with it. And because I'm the awesomest homebrewer ever, I know that all my starches have converted just because of my awesomeness.
Will should have his own KZread teaching people how to brew he has a really good way of explaining things
I believe it its best not to aerate the hot wort. I put the hose down to the bottom of the boil kettle when sparging. I never use an iodine test. I find that with a 45 min mash and re-circulation, the wort is very clear which indicates the absence of starch. I want to avoid getting iodine any where near the wort or the brewing equipment or me. I have watched a lot of videos on brewing and I like this one better than any I have seen. Very thorough. Thank you for posting it.
awesome video guys :)
I actually enjoyed the talking. It was like watching a show on tv, old school like "This Old House" or something LOL. Hilarious how the BrewingTv Hosts sometimes gave each other a look while Will was talking excessively. It's the same look I'll give a friend when another friend starts to chat too much. Love his enthusiasm though, looking forward to the rest of this series.
Excellent video Will I will be waiting for the next episode. As a home brewer turned professional I really liked the way you described the process . I would love to have you over to make a brew, and possibly a game or two. Aloha
***** BrewingTV Great video .. I'm getting ready to brew my big IPA in a few weeks, so this served as some great inspiration. Outside of my Black IPA, the only other IPA I've done has been Wil's VandalEyes.. very solid, smooth IPA. My IPA is 8.2% / 97 IBU. Cheers!
both myself and my dog would end up tripping on one of those hoses, but an awesome set up.
Not sure who owns the channel but great job not just a good video on the IPA but great video on recirculating the mash. One quick suggestion so you don't have to stick thermometer for not critical temps, use a thermometer infrared gun. Costs about $30 and works great fast and easy.

Do you stir throughout the mash time. Just wondering how you keep from compacting the grain while recirculating
Wil just went up 1000 point on my "awesome dude I would love to have a beer with" after seeing he brews his own beer and has the same kind of dog I do. Great ambassador I must admit!! Good form! If you ever hit up Indy, drop me a line!
To see Wheaton nerd out about Palmer's book like I did makes me like him even more.
I so need a brew dog. They make everything taste better! Cheers.
When do we get part 2?
That mash pump is neat !
Now i want beer, good one Wil. lol
haha, love the statement at 19:44...
Just saw Wil in an episode of Criminal Minds. Cool to see he's into brewing, too. Cheers!
20:14 I've recently read a (a/an old German) book from A. F. Zimmermann, published in 1842 about beer brewing (Der Bier-Brauer als Meister in seinem Fache oder Aufschluss aller Geheimnisse), after having picked up home brewing again. That statement somewhat reflects his motivation, having had a brewery in Bavaria himself and studied about 32 years, including travels around Germany and other countries. Not only for the common good, to supply good and better beer, but to share knowledge to make better beer, share experiences, make beer more affordable to produce through spread knowledge and advancements in the field. Among other things. He disliked the idea of hoarding knowledge as a secret, much like the producers of Brandy did at the time. He also encouraged to understand the scientific side of things, why grain is malted, what happens in the process and why you cook it at specific temperatures, instead of simply relying on empiric knowledge, or solely relying on blind experimentation. It's digitalised by Google, free and without DRM protection, it's a great read if you can read German. Or well... old German, I suppose. After a couple hundred pages, I think I finally get the hang of the letters and the long-winded, fancy, drawn-out phrasing of old German. And let me tell you, they had one and the same looking letter for B, V, and W, so you have to guess which one it is by how much sense the rest of the word makes with it. I kid you not ;) I feel like it shows that it has become a down to earth thing to do, and there's no one definitive way to do brew or simply ferment, but people are happy to share their knowledge, and happy to listen. Be merry and try some :)
Hey awesome video guys! Just wondering do you have a bazooka screen or a false bottom in that mash tun kettle? Whats better to use? Thanks
That was so great! So informative, and interesting. I'm eager to see part 2!

Will you should have called your own beer "federation pale ale" missed that one ehh.
I first saw him in Star Trek
The video mentions gypsum; but doesn't say how much to add to the brewing water. Any suggestions?
Why do people hate Wil Wheaton? I've met him face to face and he's such a nice guy! He's nicer than you think
Can this be the Brewing TV renaissance I've been hoping for?
